Rating: Summary: Good but a little predictable. Review: I have to admit that if you want a fluff thriller page turner this is the one. While the set up is really intriguing and you are fascinated by the unknown elements, the final conclusion and sub-plot are a bit disappointing. Perhaps it is the same effect that Star Wars has on little kids...been there done that. By the third act, you know who lives and dies before it's over and the final conclusion is a bit disappointing. . The thing that makes this a great read is the build up and the mystery behind the strange occurances.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, Edge-of-Your-Seat Suspense! Review: I am a big Dean Koontz fan, and this is, by far, my favorite book of his (it is the first one I read). Scary and suspenseful sci-fi/horror, Phantoms will captivate you until the very last page. The characters are realistic and full of life, the story is incredibly suspenseful and well-crafted, the setting is eerie, the story is written with excellent prose and Koontz's brilliance and knack for good suspense/horror writing really shines. I would definately recommend this to any fan, or as a starter book for anyone wanting to try a Koontz novel.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating explanation of mass disappearances Review: I absolutely loved this book -- and continue to, even though I'm on my 5th read of it. I found that the interesting references to documented historical events really added to the horror and believability of Koontz's wonderful novel. In 'Phantoms', Koontz captures the quiet dignity of a small town, and manages to turn the idea of a cozy village in the mountains on its head. By the time Dr. Paige and her sister have arrived and found the terror awaiting them, the town becomes less of a snowy sanctuary and more of a deadly prison. When broken down, the novel is really just your basic good versus evil tale-- but Koontz has added enough plot twists to make an enjoyable --if sometimes gruesome--read. On a side note, the film made from this book starring Ben Affleck was horrible, I highly recommend reading the novel instead. The absence of what I thought to be some of the most interesting scenes in the book, turned the movie into another formulaic tryst into the book-turned-horror-flick genre.
Rating: Summary: Amazing... Review: One of Koontz's best novels. He dabbles out of his usual unique genere into horror, proving once again that he can write (well) anything he chooses. Brilliant, creative, well developed characters, and best of all, this book WILL send shivers down your spine. A MUST read if you like horror or Koontz- And even if you don't.
Rating: Summary: Koontz Does it again. Review: I have read 25 Koontz books, Phanthoms keeps you on the edge of your seat. Will mankind survive? Evil always loses with Koontz & thay's okay, just trying to figure it out before the plot is given away is the fun. Once again I could not figure out how evil would fail but fail it did.
Rating: Summary: CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Oh boy, hold on to your socks this book will creep you out big time!! Get ready for a fun scare!! Koontz, does it again. I couldn't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Another Koontz favorite. Review: I can't believe they botched this book as a movie. It's one of the creepiest and most suspenseful books Koontz (or anyone!) has ever done. It had me absolutely spellbound. A young doctor finds herself in custody of her teen sister after their parents die suddenly. They arrive in a small mountain community to start their new lives together. What they find, however, is not the small town that the doctor has come to love. They find a ghost town. All the residents are either missing or found dead, their faces frozen in terror. And what ever is responsible seems to be watching their every move... This is the closest thing to horror that Koontz has ever done and it is one wild ride. An amazing and gruesome horror thriller from Koontz in the top of his form. Highest recommendation!
Rating: Summary: Bone-chilling horror! Review: I have read six novels by Dean Koontz before this one and was under the impression that he is more of a science fiction writer than anything else. However, 'Phantoms' proved his skill at creating a story that challenges the sturdiest nerves. I confess that this novel scared the living daylights out of me and left me sleepless for more than a few nights! The story begins with two sisters, Dr Jenny and Lisa, who visit a small town and discover that every person and animal is either dead or missing. From then on, there would be more killings, death, suffering, screaming, mysterious disappearances, and strange forces. As usual, Dean paints realistic characters that are deeply appealing... which I suppose is his way of increasing the tension and having the reader wish the characters would survive. I was surprised by the scientific data that was included in the book. The author's hard work and research is evident in his writing. This makes the novel not only a form of entertainment but a source of knowledge as well. He has amazing creativity and attention to detail. I have seen the movie based on this book but I do not recommend that you watch it - the book is much better.
Rating: Summary: Phatoms Review: Phantoms is a suspenseful chiller, pretty typical Dean Koontz. The story takes place in a deserted mountain town. The only people around are strange corpses that have been bruised in every single area of the body the same, with no blood at all. The town doctor and her kid sister found the town deserted after returning from their mother's funeral. Finding the hideous bodies they quickly call the nearest law enforcement office. When the sheriff and his deputies arrive, the real terror begins. Wondering if it's a new kind of disease, they call in the military. Once the truth was found though, they realized that nothing could save them from what was to come. With the deputies, and latter the military personnel, disappearing and being killed, and a mystery that goes back millions of years, Dean Koontz gives terror a whole new meaning. I consider this a masterful work of art and terror written in a way that only an experienced write like Dean Koontz could do. The horror of the Phantoms sent chills down my spine. This story is not for the feint of heart. No other author could have written a tail of suspense and terror better. The way Koontz writes is an art form. Phantoms is one of Dean Koontz's best pieces of work. I recommend this to any abed reader who enjoys to be scarred. Written in typical Dean Koontz stile. If you have had the privilege of reading any of Dean Koontz's other masterpieces you will love this book. A must have for any Dean Koontz reader.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Phantastic! Review: This is a fantastic book, a true horror classic. Phantoms was the first Koontz book I read and after reading and re-reading 30 more it is still my favourite. If you're a Koontz fan you should read this, if you're not a Koontz fan you should still read this. To miss it would be a crime. Set in the suddenly silent Snowfield, it's a page turner from the first and before you know it you're right there with Jenny, Lisa and Bryce fighting the unknown entity for survival. Read it!
