Rating: Summary: Decent with a disappointing end Review: While this is an interesting yarn overall, I would rate this book as only slightley over average in that it had some great action and some really creepy plot elements. The ending, however, was easily as disappointing as the ending that Stephen King slapped on The Tommyknockers. While I won't ruin it for those that haven't read it, suffice to say that the ending is very reminiscent of the Ghostbusters movies, which is something I haven't come to expect from Dean Koontz. I dread the movie.
Rating: Summary: Once you start reading it, you can't put it down! Review: People are disappearing mysteriously into thin air. This book is sort of based on true incidents that actually happened, like the incident of Anjikuni. You just can't wait to find out the end. Its really grr8!
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: Phantoms was excellent. No one has ever come close to matching it in coolness. The only problem was, why did Koontz put in the whole Kale Fletcher: Satan Worshiper part? Otherwise, Phanotms was great.
Rating: Summary: If you like to read about blobs of goo, this is your book Review: I've read a lot of Koontz books, and this is probably his worst. It was really good until page 300 or so, and then it took a nasty downfall when the ridiculous shape-changing blob came in. If you want a good Dean Koontz book, read The Bad Place.
Rating: Summary: A solid effort. Review: Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge Dean Koontz fan. But this relatively early effort, despite being imaginative and scary, felt a bit rote to me. The story itself was clever and inventive, but some of the characters just weren't up to par. There's the requisite nasty guy who's one of the first to go (isn't it always that way?), the old-timer who's been on the force for years, the sensitive soul...they just weren't believable to me, and that tarnished some of the book's credibility. It's a worthwhile book with a very interesting premise (Koontz's explanation for mass disappearances is truly frightening), but this extremely prolific author has much better books to offer. If you want an example of his best work, try "Watchers" (my personal favorite, and one of my favorite books of all time) or "Dark Rivers of the Heart". Overall, "Phantoms" is a worthwhile read, but don't expect too much in terms of characters.
Rating: Summary: My First Koontz, Definatly Not My Last Review: I saw the commercials to the movie and thought that the book might be worth looking at. I'm glad I did, because this one is interesting from page one. The action begins slow, but with enough mystery to hook you into it. As the book progresses and more characters show up, the action and terror gradually get more and more exciting, and ultimatly, more and more plausible. The events in this book at first look highly unlikely to ever happen, but after all is revealed you can't help but think what if.....
Rating: Summary: REAL Terror Review: Since the movie is coming out, I thought it a good time to review Phantoms. I read the book many years(6)ago but I loved it. It was one of the first Koontz stories for me and it hooked me. He makes an unbelievable situation become frighteningly real. You believe it's happening. Only Stephen King used to be able to do that(not anymore). I strongly reccommend this novel for any fan of this genre. It's one of the best. Even if the movie disappoints, please read the book.
Rating: Summary: spell bounding, the scariest book I've ever read Review: Phantoms is an edge of your seat, look-behind-your shoulder sort of book. It leaves you with endless thoughts and scared to go to bed. It's spell bounding and completely and absolutely the best book I have ever read in my entire life
Rating: Summary: builds quickly - stay up all night to finish Review: I'm a die hard Koontz fan, since i accidently received Strangers from a book club. In Phantoms you are immediately thrust into the mystery/horror. You have to keep reading. I am anxious to see if the movie does better justice to this book than have been done in the past with others.
Rating: Summary: One of Koontz's best books Review: I was hooked on Koontz from Watchers on. Have been a die hard fan. All of his books are good. Most keep you mystified until the end. Phantoms kept me gittery. I read it at night and was scared of my own shadow. I had to sleep with the lights on. His later books are good, but I loved the earlier Koontz best.
