Summary: The Door To December
Review: The Door To December

Nathan Fuller 510 pages

The book, Door To December, is a suspenseful novel. Dean Koontz does a remarkable job in explaining the detailed events of the story. The story is about a little girl named Melanie who was kidnapped by her father at the age of three. During her time with her father, Melanie was subject to tortures beyond imagination. The story takes place the morning of three brutal murders at the house where Melanie and her father were residing. Melanie's mother, Laura, had just been notified of the homicides and had arrived at the house. There, a police officer named Dan Haldane informed her of what had happened. He also told her that a girl, around the age of nine, had been found wandering the streets nude and oblivious to world around. Melanie's mother told the officer to take her immediately to the place where she was after they were finished at the house. While there Melanie's mother identified her brutalized husband and toured the house until she came to the Gray Room. This room was filled with a sensory deprivation chamber, an electric chair, and other forms of torture. After the house, Laura went to the place where Melanie was and was reunited with her. One thing was wrong though, Melanie was in an autistic, almost catatonic state. From there, Laura, Dan, Melanie and a bodygaurd named Earl, search for the truth behind Melanie's lost past. Along the way, they are being chased by an invisible creature that has been committing all of these murders. They soon find that the answers to this troubling mystery lies within the unknown Door to December.

Summary: This Book is AWESOME
Review: I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz and though some of his books have fallen short of his usual greatness, Door to December is one of the best books he has written. The entire book kept me on the edge of my seat, the dialogue between the characters was well written and the plot was so out there. Sometimes I wonder where he gets these ideas. YOU MUST READ THIS!

Summary: Great read up until the end...
Review: "The Door to December" revolves around a girl named Melanie. She was kidnapped by her dad when she was three. For six years she is subjected to tons of abuse and numerous amounts of torture. Six years later, Melanie's mother Laura receives a call from the police telling her that they have found three dead bodies, and one of them is her ex husband. Frantic to know what has happened to her daughter, she rushes over. Dan Haldaine is the detective that is in charge of the investigation. He and Laura go through the house and come upon a room with a sensory deprivation chamber, an electric chair, and tons of other torture devices. The one thing they don't find is Melanie. Later that night , she is found wandering the streets with a blank look in her eyes. She is now catatonic and borderline autistic. Laura, Dan Haldaine, and a bodyguard named Earl team up to find the truth behind Melanie's past. Along the way they incounter an invisible and unstoppable creature that is responsible for killing anyone associated with Melanie and her past. The key to unlocking the past lies within the unknown Door to December.

The Door to December is a thrilling book that offers great characters ,the controversial subject of child abuse, and overall terror. As good as this book is, I must warn you that it does contain some disturbing scenes. At points, I found myself cringing. The characters are the best thing about the book. Dan Haldaine is one of Koontz's best heroes. He is determined, intelligent, and shows undying love towards Laura and Melanie. Laura is great. She is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her daughter safe. But Laura is also a child psychologist. The scenes when she is trying to unlock her daughter's mind are incredible. Earl adds a nice touch as the bodyguard that helps them out. The book does have a few flaws though. The story becomes slightly predictable, and the ending leaves things up in the air. However the rest of the book makes up for it.

Door to December is a terrifying psychological thriller that will shock you, captivate you, and amaze you. Now the story may be somewhat predictable and offer an ending that is uncertain. However, the book is still very enjoyable despite the few flaws that it does have. If you are a fan of Dean Koontz, I highly recommend that you pick this book up.

Summary: Grips you but...
Review: ... I knew who was behind it without needing to finish the book.

This is my first Dean Koontz book. I like what I read but the plot was simple and it failed to prove me wrong on my judgement.

6 years after 3 year-old Melanie gets abducted by her father, her mum, Laura, gets woken up in the dead of night to find her husband, Dylan, brutally murdered in his apartment.

Even though mother and daughter reunites, more deaths follow and Melanie, in her stupor from being a prisoner for so long, reveals that after all the men are dead, she would go too.

Who is going to stop this thing from getting to her and who on earth is capable of such demonic force on the people?

A very gripping tale that makes you want to read right on, chapter after chapter. I found it hard to put down the book as the story flowed smoothly and easily.

It's not very spooky but the brutality portrayed in the story makes you roll your eyes in horror. There's a light element of mystery, mostly regarding what the Door of December really is. Also, the wonders of science are presented here and it makes one rethink the moral issues that surround the acts of testing and experiments.

As you read, there's little doubt as to what/who the murderer could be. That's where the story failed. Otherwise, a good book.

Summary: Pleased
Review: This was the 5th Dean Koontz novel I have read, it is my favorite book along with his "False Memories" book. Mr. Koontz did a fabulous job depicting characters and a very psychotic situation. I went crazy and couldn't put the book down because the suspense from page one just keeps building up and building up. You have inklings of what is happening, only you aren't positive. The reader doesn't get the whole picture until the last 5 or 6 chapters of the novel.

Melanie, the 6 year old girl was abducted by Lauras husband (Melanie's mother). Melanie's father puts Melanie through painful and pshychologically damaging experiments in order to perfect a specific phsychogeist state. The Door to december is chilling and people are getting brutally murdered.

This novel was by far the most suspensful book I have ever read. I absolutely loved it.

Summary: The Door to December (1985)
Review: While a moderately forgotten tale of Dean Koontz in the middle 1980's, "The Door to December" is a more than formidable addition to some of the excellent works that he produced around that time ("Watchers", "Phantoms", "Strangers"). As with many of his novels, Koontz takes an ordinary, yet devastating fear (the kidnapping and horrifying dark confinement of a small child that induces only partial development and poor social interaction) and expands on it using a cat-and-mouse tale that is a quick, enjoyable read.

Laura McCaffrey is the mother of a missing nine-year old child who suspects that her daughter was kidnapped by her deranged scientist ex-husband. When her former lover is found dead with many of his associates, Laura is worried to her beautiful Melanie is dead and lost forever. Melanie is miraculously discovered wandering the streets by the police, but the effects of the awful abuse and neglect she received from six-years of inflicted horror has left her with speech impediments and almost no response to touch, voice, and love--and an incredible power. As the secrets of Melanie's abilities and her captors are revealed, Laura realizes that her husband was part of a top-secret research program--a program that some will kill for if they get their hands on Melanie. Dan Haldane is the cop assigned to the case and will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of Laura and her daughter, but his attachment to the family causes him to become obsessed with the case.

An evocative story that creates deep, believable characters is draped with superb chase sequences and good dialogue that keeps the tale fresh and enjoyable. Koontz does a fine job developing the story and creates and articulate heroine in Laura, whose frustration and love with her tormented Melanie is a roller-coaster of determination and exasperation. "The Door to December" is one of Koontz's first look at how the twisted use of technology is not only threatening, but can be truly terrifying as well. A should-read for all fans; a piece that has gotten lost in the midst of many other great stories and should not be overlooked.

Summary: I had to wait until sunrise to sleep!
Review: I am an avid reader of Dean Koontz. I have read all of his books, even the ones under pseudonyms. Although my all-time favorite is "Lightning", I found this book to be thoroughly gripping; I was unable to put it down. I know it sounds silly, and I am not crazy, but I actually was so revved up that I could not go upstairs to bed until the morning. This book is an all-time favorite of mine, and I love all of his novels. He is absolutely brilliant! A little imagination definitely goes a long way!!!! Be prepared to be spooked.
