Rating: Summary: Best Fantasy genre I've read to date! Review: I read this book in 2 days, (the 800+ one), that should be some indicator of how good it was. This was one of the first books that I read while I did everything, including walking, I believe I spent more time in the bathroom reading this book than anything else. The characters he creates are excellent, but so totally different from anything I had read up to that point. His alternate world is fantastic. Barker reels you into the story line slowly, but interestingly. But make no mistake, it gets interesting soon enough. I literally could not put the book down. I would also recomment Weaveworld.
Rating: Summary: I used to hate fantasy novels. Review: I think it's because I never had the proper background for it: never got read fairy tales as a child (cue the sad violin music in the background), only saw "The Hobbit" as an animated movie, didn't even own a copy of Grimm's Fairy Fales until I was in my mid-twenties. Sad, huh? Then, after a little pondering, I figured out some of my problem: since I didn't have the fantasy background, I'd need a guide through the fantasy world -- a protagonist who was as much a stranger to the area and culture as I was. I requested book titles on a local bbs (boy, oh boy, did *that* spark discussion), and this was one of the titles mentioned. I'd read some Barker before, and gave it a go. Oh. My. Do not, under any circumstances, let the size of this book intimidate you. Yes, you could use it to fend off an attacker -- consider that a bonus. I was SORRY THAT THE NOVEL HAD ENDED when I finished it. And yes, I read the big "single" edition. Descriptions of the Imagica made me think of faeries and Dr. Suess and foreign countries all rolled together. I have never wanted to go walking in an enchanted wood before, nor have I ever been quite so fascinated by snails. I think that Barker excells at writing long novels: he's my anti-Steven King. I could picture the weather and the landscape without the images in my head feeling cartoony, as they usually tend to. I was lost in the Imagica and didn't want to come out. This novel starts in our world, and while that's what I really need to get going with fantasy novels, I initally found that the length of the book and the images of how dreary our world was kept me from picking it back up for long stretches at a time. I'm here to tell you: keep going, it gets better. Much, much better. Oh, baby. Very few books have since sucked me in like "Imagica" did, and I consider this work a very rare find for doing so. If you want to really escape into a novel, I highly recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: The most amazing book I have ever read. Review: After a friend recommended this book to me,I was a little surprised by how much he rated it...then I read it for myself, and he wasn`t exaggerating! Imajica sucked me into the lives and worlds of people I dreamt of as a child, and although they were outlandish in so many ways,I felt totally at home. It has been a long time since I have read a story so well told that I felt as if I knew the characters.Everything seemed almost beautifully plausible, even though it was utterly fantastic, and I can quite honestly say it managed to wring every available emotion out of me.This is less a story, more a fabulous journey into the parts of your imagination you forgot you even had. READ IT NOW!!!
Rating: Summary: Fascinating Review: In conjunction with his other books this is just a piece of a huge puzzle. Making you think of who were are and where we are in the universe. This is another triumph for Clive Barker, re-writing the way you'll see the world forever.
Rating: Summary: Barker is a master storyteller... Review: Clive Barker has written several wonderful works in the horror and fantasy genres and this is the crowning achievement. An excelent blend of twisted shadows and fantastic voyages, Imajica is a work of modern literature not to be taken too lightly for its "horror" aspects attributed to its author. Barker has truly grasped whatever magic that makes us all children in parent's laps and spins tales that take our breath away. More than a story, Imajica is characters and places and moods that come alive through Barker's amazing talent for imagination. I also recommend The Great And Secret Show, Everville--those two to be read in that order--Sacrament and Galilee.
Rating: Summary: IF STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLE THIS WOULD BE THE BOOK TO HAVE! Review: Rarely, does one find a good story. Far more rarely, does one find a good writer. In Imajica, the reader finds both. Most readers compare Clive Barker's earlier work to that of Stephen King. In fact, Mr. King has been quoted as saying that Clive Barker is the future of Horror, an impressive statement, but comparing Barker to King is like comparing an orange to a lemon. Yes, they are both citrus fruits, but they could not be more different. As a lemon, King conceives a good story, but the writing style is not always pleasing to the palette. While Barker, the orange, conjures an equally good story, his true essence is in the sweetness of the artful use of words. Nowhere is that more evident than in this book. There are to date only two books that I recommend without qualms as the best books ever written. Imajica is the first. The second is The Liar's Club by Mary Karr. If I were stranded on a desert isle, I could live with but these two books and be content.
Rating: Summary: A little of everything Review: This is the best book I've ever read. It's got every element, it's the greatest love story, the greatest fantasy, the greatest tragedy. I became so entangled in these characters' lives, I understood how they thought, why they loved and I was truly sorry to see the story end. There is something bigger about this novel, as if it keeps playing somewhere out there, and we only glimpsed the part captured on paper. I've read it many times, and reccommend it to all who love a great story.
Rating: Summary: morbidly fascinating, but too many plot holes Review: This is honestly one of the most bizarre books I have ever read. It's gripping, no doubt about that. You put it down and find your mind wandering back to the strange lands of the Five Dominions, wondering what will happen next. The strange events, places, and people stick in your mind and invade your thoughts. While the premise for the book is good, it could have been written better. Too many things are left unexplained, and near the end of the book the characters start acting very out-of-character. Mr. Barker also throws in some pretty graphic and disgusting scenes, seemingly just to shock the reader into going, "Ewwww, gross!" I enjoyed reading the book once, but I don't think I'll be opening its pages again. In addition to leaving many things unanswered, it could have been about 200-300 pages shorter. But even though I'll never read Imajica again, I think that parts of it will continue to haunt my subconscious for a long time to come...
Rating: Summary: 100% class Review: Quite simply the best book i have ever read. An incredibly ambitious novel that has it all; horror, sex, dark fantasy, religion. Clive Barker has always been my favourite author and IMAJICA has always been (in my opinion) his best book. So stop reading this and go and beg, borrow or steal a copy (or if necessary, buy one) right now!
