Rating: Summary: Very well written! Review: This was my first Stephen King novel and I was very pleased with it. I see some people didn't like the book but I enjoyed every bit of it. I have not seen the movie but can't wait for it to come out to compare them
Rating: Summary: A total, utter debacle... Review: Normally I applaud King's works, but Thinner was one of the most terrible books I have read in my life. The storyline is bizarre, the beginning is an example of abject idiocy, the characters are apathetic fools, and the entire work overall is just simply terrible
Rating: Summary: Definitely better than the movie!! Review: As a new King reader, I found this book to be discriptive and yet it left a bit to the imagination. I say it is better than the movie because I found the movie much less discriptive and quite boring. This book, I believe, is well written but could use a little more excitement because listening about a man eating himself to death one moment and dying from "starvation" the next gets kinda boring. It took me a mere 3 days to finish and I was reading pretty steadily. The ending is the best part! The discription of the old man, the police officer, and the judge were all incredible. A must read for any King fans...all others might want to skim it for the good parts
Rating: Summary: Not very scary, but highly interesting Review: This book was okay. I had trouble putting it down although I was disappointed by the ending
Rating: Summary: The Book By King. Review: I am a very big King fan, yet "Thinner" is a disappointment.
The book starts off well but quickly goes down hill. Not scary. Not fast moving. A complete and utter yawn. Don't try it! Only if you like reading King no matter what, you should not read this!
Rating: Summary: A trite romp through the mind of a tired horror writer. Review: Thinner seems to be descriptive of more than just the lead character in this book. The plot, and subtext are also afflicted with this gypsy's curse. While King's usual writing style leans heavily on sudden graphic detail, Thinner is based primarily on screenplay melodrama.
I believe this book to be much like the filler in a good cigar, all substance and no flavor. Stay away from lame curses, and stick to angry cats and Randall Flagg's.
Rating: Summary: BLAH!!!!! Review: THINNER IS BORING AND THE MOVIE IS EVEN WORSE, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON KING'S WORST BOOK TO DATE
Rating: Summary: Not one of Stephen King's better fictional pieces. Review: Let me state that I am a Stephen King fan and have enjoyed several of his stories. However, I was disappointed in "Thinner". Billy Halleck is not a likable character and you end up not caring whether he can get the curse taken off of him or not. His daughter is a brat and his wife has no backbone. We never really get to know the old gyspy man. We are just to left to assume that he is the bad guy but I don't agree with that at all. It took me a while to finish this story. I found myself contemplating whether or not to finish the book. I did not see the movie, so this is soley from the text. The overall storyline is this: A fat business man runs over and kills a gypsy woman. Her father puts a curse on him. Using only one word, thinner, the curse is has been cast. So Billy begins to wither away until he resembles a skelton. And of course scares everyone he sees due to his grotesqueness. He has to find the gypsy man and plead to get the curse taken off. Don't forget Billy's faithful mobster friend. Due to Billy being such a wimp, I don't know how Stephen comes up with putting these two together. It's not believable. Well of course, Billy finds the old decaying gypsy man. You can read what happens. The ending is very predictable and left me empty
Rating: Summary: A fat man is put under a spell and starts loosing weight. Review: After accidentally killing a magicans dughter, the magician put a spell on a fat man. The spell causes him to become thinner and thinner without control
Rating: Summary: "THINNER" isn't always better Review: Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, may have released this novel under a pseudonym for good reason. While King's work is never terrible, THINNER certainly isn't his best. Nonetheless, it is worth a read - but only for a true King fan. I don't think I'm a loyal King fan yet, but with works like THE STAND and PET SEMATARY, I think I am well on my way.THINNER is about an overweight lawyer named William Halleck. Despite the fact his doctor has warned him he's nearing heart attack territory, other aspects of life are better. He's got a good job and earns a living that is more than adaquete. He has a wonderful wife and despite the fact he's a big guy, the two of them have an active sex life. Billy also has a 14 year-old daughter named Linda with whom he is quite close. Besides the weight issue, life is just peachy for Billy Halleck. Until the gypsy's curse. He accidentally hits and kills the 75 year-old gypsy daughter and her family, including her 106 year-old father, yearn for revenge. So now, Billy is losing weight at a drastically alarming rate of about 9 or more pounds a week. He's being erased off the face of the earth, pound by pound. If he enlists the help of friend and Three Brothers restaurant owner Ginelli, will the livid, vengeance-seeking gyspsies surrender and remove their curse? Or will Billy eventually waste away to nothing but skin and bones? Eh. I read on and found out. But if I hadn't, the suspense wouldn't have killed me, if you get the gist of what I'm saying. "THINNER" is not as remarkable as other reads by King - and not nearly as memorable. Usually, his novels boast well-developed characters and an exhilarating plot filled with twists and turns. With the exception of the ending, I found this book to be more predictable than his others. Whatever. You can't expect the man to churn out continuous hit after hit, can you?
