Rating: Summary: incredibly bad Review: i can't stand this book. the characters were cold and empty, and unbelieveable. the saintliness of jennifer wagner made me want to vomit. this book is just like Pike's other teen horror novels, which normally would be fine, but since it's stretched out to adult novel proportions, it is incredibly long and unbearable. i feel cheated of the hours i wasted reading this book, which is just a rehashing of Pike's usual themes. if you are a young reader and love Christopher Pike, you will probably enjoy this book and think i am crazy for not liking it. but if you are like me, an old Christopher Pike fan from back in the day who, now older & wiser, recognizes the same-ness of all of his writing (in that it's pretty bland because he applies a similar formula to every story) then steer clear!!! take my warning for what it is. I SO wish someone else had told me not to read this book.
Rating: Summary: You'll Come Back Again and Again Review: I first read this book at age 12, when it was published in 1993. At the time the concepts were very mature and, in retrospect, I probably wouldn't let a thirteen-year old pick this up - but my mother recognized the author as a teen horror writer who was one of my very favorites and did not relaize the level of adult subject matter. Something brought me back to this book again and again over the years. True, I often came back to many Pike books, but this one outlasted my maturation into adulthood and remains exalted on my bookshelf as my all-time favorite. At some point I vowed to read the book each and every year, and at 21 I have nearly succeeded and probably read it eight or so times. This book is always new to me. It is always haunting, and beautiful, with multiple stories and characters who are so real that they live on in my memory long after I have put the book down. I used to spend hours lending names and faces of famous people to the characters, for the movie that I am convinced this could become. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is netiher horror nor romance, sci-fi nor mystery, but something strange and compelling which encompasses all genres. It may sound peculiar but I have never read another book that infuses such a feeling of ... well, rapture. Reading rapture! Hokey, yes. Nonetheless - this book will stay with you. I cannot wait to read it again.
Rating: Summary: Mar's Secret Review: Book Review The Season of Passage Christopher Pike Reviewed by Santos T. Ramirez Aliens on Mars. Blood-sucking vampire demons that take your soul without knowing. Yeah, whatever. No such things, right? In, The Season of Passage, all weird things happen on Mars that you least expected. Only things that you thought happened only in the movies actually exist once you step foot on Mars. Everything you loved and cared for, will just be forgotten as your new passion for drinking blood gets worse every minute you are there. You become stuck to their passion for death. The world changes for Lauren Wagner when she and her crew go on a two-year trip to Mars. Even though engaged to a writer, Terry, she is willing to hold off the wedding until her return from Mars. Her parents died in a car accident years ago and now she only has her younger sister, Jennifer, known as Jenny and also her fiance Terry in her life. Even though Jenny has terrible nightmares about Lauren's trip, Lauren is still willing to go. They become really close with every second before the trip to Mars. But the real problem is when Lauren and her crew get on Mars, will they come back alive or will they become something they're not? Christopher Pike does a good job with this book. It's amazing how the book catches your mind after reading the first couple of pages. Pike reminds us that even though we can't see something,m that doesn't mean its not there. He shows this by Lauren, on her journey to Mars, that even though the person you rode with to Mars looks fine, that doesn't mean he's still the good guy. This happens a lot around with everyone because sometimes we are in a position where we don't know if we can trust a person with a secret or whatever and they might turn out to be the enemy or the villain. This book is all about trust. Trust is very important, especially if you were off to some planet you were not familiar with. That's why reading this book will actually help you out in many ways, but mostly it will spook you out.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: This is an incredible story by the best author of all, Christopher Pike. I can't decide which of his books is my favorite; I'm stuck between the Remember Me Series, The Last Vampire Series, Whisper Of Death, The Cold One, and The Season of Passage. When it comes to which book is the best, however, there is no doubt in my mind. The Season of Passage gets the gold. It is an intriguing, touching, heart-wrenching story that envelops you and does not let go. Indeed, I was wishing it could be longer when I reached it's beautiful but bittersweet ending. Quite simply, this is Pike's most well-written book. It goes above and beyond all expectations and never ceases to amaze. The storyline is refined to perfection; there is not a single thing missing. The characterization is superb; each character will stay with me until the end of time. From the childlike playfulness and innocence of gary, to the strength and grit of Lauren, Season of Passage will steal your heart and give you the ride of your life.
Rating: Summary: Read This Book! Review: Wow!I have just finished Season of Passage, and I was totally blown away!Lauren Wagner has been chosen to go to Mars, partly on a rescue mission.A group of Russian astronauts went to Mars before, but nobody has heard from them since a "communications failure" meant that contact was lost. Some people believe they are alive, others don't.Lauren and the team go to Mars to find out. There are a few who believe that what happened was not natural, that there is something on the red planet that isn,t human, and they are right! The other twist to the story is that whatever is on Mars is connected with Lauren's younger sister,Jennifer.I love this book,it has it all;horror, suspense, surprises and amazing twists that totally shock you!The characters are believable, and the way Christopher Pike has written the story makes you feel you are there with them. One of my all-time favourites!
Rating: Summary: Great suspense, talented author falls a bit short of ***** Review: This was my first Pike novel. I am a thirty-something adult and horror novel fan (non-King stuff mostly). I was very impressed with Pike's ability to build suspense and to scare the pants off me. Most of the reviews here are by folks who've been reading his books for years, or read his other books as young adults. I thought Lauren and Jennifer were ridiculously young for us to believe....especially Lauren in her astronaut and m.d. role. This evoked an adolescent feel to the novel. And the ending just wrapped the whole thing up too easily by twisting the two stories together, and that disappointed me. I wanted something fresh, something unexpected and I didn't get it.
Rating: Summary: Seasons change, but the worthiness of this book never will. Review: I have been quite a collector of Christopher Pike over the years. This has remained my favorite book, not just by Christopher Pike, but for all time. Mr. Pike's incorporation of drama, fantasy, and horror all combine to make the reader a believer. I still get the chills any time someone mentions the possibility of traveling to Mars during our lifetime. I love the way that Mr. Pike always seems to have two seemingly unrelated tales within his books, but always has them combine in such a way that you can scarcely believe it. It's two incredible stories for the price of one. Read this book. enjoy it, and keep it close to your heart.
Rating: Summary: I almost had to sleep with the lights on... Review: I have seen SO many horror movies and read TONS of horror stories, but nothing that I have seen or read thus far has gotten the same reaction out of me as The Season of Passage. This book actually scared me because I could totally see what happened in the book happening in real life. I recommend this book to everyone!
Rating: Summary: Even better the second time around Review: I first read this book, when I was 16 years old and could not put it down. To this day (7 years later) it is still the scarist book I ever read. But I am currently reading it for the seventh time. Everytime I read it I notice something I missed the first time around. Buy this book in hard back because you'll definitely want to read it more than once. Season of Passage is primarily the story the US exploration to Mars that go to do research and find out what happened to the Russian crew that went before them. But the terror starts long before any of them ever leave the ground. With vivid nightmares and an unexplainable pull and dread of the 'dead' planet. There is also the underlying story that is being written by the younger sister of the main character. At the end the two stoies combine to an ending that will leave you wanting more and eager to read it again and again... There is so much about this book I could tell you but I won't for fear of giving the story away. But Mr. Pike did an extrodinary job of developing characters that seemed real enugh to touch, and invoke an emotional response from the reader. It's the little details that make this book great, and most readers won't recognize the significance till the last page. (Think Sixth Sense) This book is a must read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book--Something to keep you awake at night Review: This book is wonderfully creepy. Again, Christopher Pike has shown his wonderful writing skills and techniques. I can never put anything of his down until I've read the last page!
