Summary: Love me, the voice said. I am not evil...
Review: Ok, take a moment and imagine the most wonderful day of your life...that is exactly what you will feel after you read this book, no, this creative work of art. Christoper has an imagination to die for... This book is about a "passage" that people must go through ever thousand or so years. A circle of life, or death if you will. It is about a young woman and her teen sister that discover that history does repeat itself. Read it, you'll thank me, and Pike later--trust me, you'll love it!!

Summary: Impressive coming from Pike, he matured
Review: I read Chrisopher Pike's books years ago, around the ages of seven or eight, and then I kind of grew out of them. Season of Passage was still sitting on my shelf, unread, because I couldn't wade through the plot development at that age. But a few years later I picked it up once again and when I finished it I realized that it'd had a profound effect on me. It was a very powerful story, my favorite that Christopher Pike has ever written. (Although I still really enjoy Remember Me

Summary: Still a good book
Review: I was a fan of Christopher Pike from middle school on through high school.
Here are what I see as possible flaws (some depend on personal preference).

1. Christopher Pike was first a young adult writer and while I think that for a young adult writer his themes are usually very creative and imaginative and deep, there is still a bit of a "young adult" like feel to this book. It's not something I can really put my finger on. Maybe it is simply because I've read so many of his books.

2. Pike likes to take a theory or an idea (religious, metaphysical, etc.) and then sort of do a "what if..." plot twist on it. So some of his books have some of the same ideas but a different "what if" and therefore, it IS a different story, but I can see where that would be irritating to people (his book Monster had a somewhat similar idea to this book). Again, I don't mind this because I've always been interested in teh ideas he presesnts as much as the story that develops it.

and the good!

1. Speaking of Season of Passage specifically, I thought this was one of his better books. He is usually very good at the story within a story plotline and I thought he did an incredible job of blending science fiction, fantasy, and even religous/metaphysical ideas--but then I think he usually is really good at that.

2. I like the ending, but then I like an ending that fits rather than a happy ending. It wasn't a happy ending really, but it fit and was appropriate. I think it would have robbed not from teh story, but from his overall theme (to quote the bookcover was one of "salvation").

3. I thought that over all, his use of "eden" the idea of "martians" and that whole concept was amazing, creative and unique. Young adult or not, it's still one of the better books and I do highly recommend it.

Summary: Updating an old review
Review: I reviewed this book back in July of 2002 using lots of cheesy descriptors and verbosity. Well, I still love the book as much as ever, although this time I'm not compelled to launch into any cliches.

I DO however want to expand more on what you might THINK you know about this book. Pike is well known as an author of teen horror, but this is not a young adult novel. I feel that Pike's established reputation as a teen horror writer actually could have hurt this book because it makes it less likely to be taken seriously by adult readers and the literary community in general. It is most definitely for a mature audience and can MORE than hold its own for content and quality against the novels of any other respected authors of adult fiction. I find myself shocked that this book was never "discovered" by the literary community because it is really quite brilliant. Like most of the reviewers I grew up reading Pike's YA fiction and was actually a little surprised by this book, which is a very mature and adult story. You probably want me to get to some point, so here it is: This is NOT a young adult novel so please do not disregard it just because of Pike's reputation as a teen horror author. Don't make the mistake of the general literary community and overlook this book based on your preconceived notions about Pike's work.

On to another point. I was reading the reviews, and I was overwhelmed by a common thread that repeated over and over. Snippets like "I've read this book x number of times"... "I'm on my second copy because I read my first one out" ... "this is my favorite book of all time"... "10 years later this is still the best book I've ever read"... What's my new point? I see very few books with reviews that are so repetitive and consistent in such a manner. Almost everyone who discovers this book finds it to be something really special and worth coming back to over and over. Maybe one lone reviewer could be nuts, but take a quick look over the reviews, and you'll discover that almost all of us are saying the same thing. So give it a shot.

READ THIS BOOK.
