Summary: Very disappointing
Review: I can see I'm probably in the minority here among reviewers, but I could not get into this book. The characters seemed very unappealing to me, the plotting weak, and whoever did the editting on this volume should probably be fired for all the mistakes I spotted with paragraphs that should have been in italics but weren't, or that changed back and forth in the middle of a word. Overall, reading this book left me feeling bored.

Summary: De-licious!!
Review: I devoured this book. But I'll be the first to say that it it EXTREMLY graphic, both sexually, and concering violence. Sometimes both combined. But then, I'm an odd duck. I thought the book was chillingly, and shockingly wonderful. The only thing I could find "wrong" with anything concering the Midnight Blue Collection was this: If you bought each of the three book seperatly, you wouldn't know what was going on if you didn't start at the beginning. If someone bought "In The Blood" first, they might not enjoy it beceause they don't get a chance to get to know Sonja and her blood-stained, chaotic history. So as long as you aren't a child (which I mean litterally, not metaphorically), and have a taste for bloody, sexy vampire books, you'll eat this one up just like I did. Rock on, Nancy!

Summary: A good collection
Review: I first read Nancy A. Collins when she was writing for DC Comics' "Swamp Thing" series and I can't say I was too impressed at the time.
However, many sources I have read respectfully mention her work on "Sunglasses After Dark" and subsequent Sonja Blue books. By chance I spotted a copy of "In the Blood" one day at a second-hand bookshop and decided to give it a try. Not bad. But I didn't think it was great either.
I recently re-read her short story "The Love of Monsters" and decided to give the Sonja Blue series a second look. My local library has a copy of "Midnight Blue: The Sonja Blue Collection" so I borrowed it and read it. I must say that reading "Sunglasses After Dark" (the first book in this collection) first and then the subsequent books makes all the difference. Sonja Blue is far more sympathetic a character when you are more familiar with her past. By the second novel she has become (as one reviewer called her) the Vampire Terminator and it is not until the third book and the episode with her new lover Judd (previously published as the short story "Cold Turkey) that she returns to actually displaying her humanising vulnerabilities. That being said, Sonja Blue is certainly a very cool literary charcter and is great for a bit of escapism. Deeper psychological explorations in the books are there, but this isn't Anne Rice, folks (thank goodness). I fully intend to purchase "Dead Roses for a Blue Lady" - the collection of Sonja Blue short stories - so I can read a story a night.

Summary: Even better the 2nd time
Review: I first read this book on a road trip from TN to Colorado and it really helped to pass the time in Kansas. I tend to read fast, so I didn't really get to savor the things that make Sonja Blue who she really is. I don't think you can compare this vampire trilogy to any others..it's just a whole different (albeit wonderful) story to the classic vampire genre. The 2nd time I read this book I was a little older and once again went on a trip from TN to New Orleans and wow what a wonderful companion to have in your hotel room reading at night while Sonja Blue dumps her victims in a bayou just miles from where you are sleeping. Can't wait to read the next!

Summary: You won't want to put it down!
Review: I love Nancy A. Collins! ( I just spent $...on one of her out of print books!) I started by picking up the 4th book in her series, not knowing it. Then I picked up this book a few years later. I had it completly finished in three weeks, that is about a book a week. The tales of Sonja Blue are intriging and exciting. For the weak at heart, this book is VERY graphic, and not for young kids. Sonja's personal battles with the vampire inside of her make these books a battle within the ultimate battle.
