Rating: Summary: Move over Stephen King! Review: I am not even a science fiction or super-natural fan, but I could not put this book down. All of the usual cliches come to mind: page-turner, edge-of-your-seat suspense, etc. It usually takes several books for a writer to become this good, but Tananarive Due is is a rare and gifted exception. Only a writer of obvious sensitivity and insight (and a brilliant imagination)could make such an implausible plot seem possible. Let's be real: Who but God is immortal? In our logical mind, we know we all have to die sometime. The author also makes us care about the characters, especially David, despite his often psychotic and socio-pathic behavior. No matter how much you want to hate him, you can't. We understand his desparation to keep his secret, yet we also sympathize with his love for his current family and willingness to behave in a Dr. Frankenstein-like manner to keep his family with him. I saw room for a sequel in this book. I do hope Ms. Due produces one.
Rating: Summary: My Soul to Keep Review: This novel was on my "to read list" for a couple of months before I finally checked it out at the library. I checked it out three times afterward, and finally they said I couldn't check it out! That is when I knew I had to own the book. The story of David/Dawit and Jessica, and the Life Brothers of Lalibela is one of the most compelling stories I have ever read. The characters were so real to me that sometimes I found myself dreaming of them. Tananarive Due is an amazing, gifted writer. It's been a long time since I have read a novel that totally captivated me from the beginning. I get sooo tired of reading the same novels OVER AND OVER again, about people who can't find a man, or people cheating on their mates. The same he/say she say drama that has proliferated black fiction, unfortunately. Here comes Ms. Due, a new voice in speculative fiction, to rescue people like me from boredom! Thank you, thank you! I was there, in Ethiopia and Miami with the characters, all the way! Everyone should read this novel and definitely go see the movie!
Rating: Summary: I'm still waiting... Review: For sistah girl's new book and the movie version of these fantastic, outstanding novels! I read them sometime ago and then I went back and re-read them both and they are still as fantastic as the first time. I told everyone that would listen about these books.. My Soul To Keep and The Living Blood! The best stuff!
Rating: Summary: SUSPENSEFUL AND ENGAGING! Favorite Book of 2000! Review: My Soul To Keep (MSTK) by Tananarive Due is one of the best books that I've Read in 2000! This book was just awesome and included all of the elements of a good read. MSTK was well written, scripted with a vivid imagination and creativity and included a strong storyline, great character development along with cliff hanging plot twists and turns. I must digress for a moment and admit that I had MSTK on my "To Read List" for two years but was a little reluctant to read it because of the genre. Once I committed myself to reading MSTK, I found myself really getting into this book and the storyline; I ravenously turned the pages and became so all consumed that I didn't want to put the book down. MSTK engrosses you in the tale of David/Dawit the immortal who will do whatever is necessary to maintain his family, the love of his life wife Jessica, and Kira his young daughter. The plot grabbed me from the beginning as Ms. Due had a wonderful way of telling the story and taking one back into time. Once Ms. Due had your attention she took you back periodically to help you understand How Dawit/became David. I felt that I was actually back in the various timeperiods depicted in the book and actually waiting to travel back to present day. Due weaves Past with Present in the telling of MSTK and in doing so she provides the reader with enough background information to keep the reader on the edge of the seat while adding depth and giving substance to the storyline. MSTK keeps the reader fully immersed and satiated until you have finished the last page. There is so much to absorb and enjoy in MSTK that no one can really tell you about it; MSTK is a book that you must experience in order to receive the full scope, the full meaning of the story. I plan to read MSTK again...hopefully a little slower this time so that I can SAVOR AND DIGEST the small details as well this time. Ms. Due combines a fine blend of history, science fiction, and drama to make the story riveting and to hold your interest from beginning to end. I recommend MSTK as an excellent read for everyone and I can't wait for the sequel...I know David/Dawit is still out there and I can't wait to hear what he's been up to since I last read about him.
Rating: Summary: Creepy but Fascinating Review: Jessica thinks she has the perfect life. She is a top reporter for a Miami newspaper. She married her handsome college professor David Wolde. They have a beautiful little girl Kira. Her husband is very attentive. He's so attentive that her newspaper colleague Peter calls David Mr. Perfect. But things are not what they seem. David has a secret that is 550 years old - himself. When Jessica and Peter decide to write a book together, it starts a chain of events that lead to death for some and eternal life for others. There are genuinely creepy parts in this book, but it is also a fascinating look at the meaning of life and death. What would you do with immortality? MY SOUL TO KEEP is a wonderful, moving novel.
Rating: Summary: Good job T! Review: This is possibly the best book I have ever read in my entire life. It's one of those books that bring you into a whole different world, and as if you are in the story. This thriller is very well-written, and Mrs. Due is a very talented writer. While reading the first couple of pages you might get bored, but don't put down the book and call it trash, read on. As you get to the 20th page, you will put your whole life in the book. A guarranteed page-turner, you will be shocked at the unbelievable climax and at the ending. The only bad thing about this book is when you are done. You leave all the unforgettable charachters and leave the wonderful story. I hope Tananarive Due makes a sequel of some sort. You will definetely LOVE this book.
Rating: Summary: This One is a Winner! Review: I had sworn off horror books. They kept me up at night and wondering what was under the bed. Oh well, I succumbed to "My Soul to Keep." What a wonderful book and the premise was so intriguing: a middle-class black family in Miami is not what it seems...the husband is a 500 year old immortal. The flashbacks to some of his earlier lives throughout history were fascinating and his love for his current wife, Jessica, is enthralling. The story of how Jessica comes to discover who he is and what he is, strings you along to the last thrilling page. I absolutely raced to the end of this book and hungrily went out for the next one, "The Living Blood." I became aware of Ms. Due many years ago and just never opened a book of hers, (getting away from that horror thing don't 'ya know). I will never make that mistake again. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Riveting!!!! Review: Ms. Due did an excellent job @ telling this story - it kept me spellbound from beginning to end. A couple of times, it had me looking over my shoulder in fear! I don't know if I want to read the sequel (The Living Blood) for fear of ruining a good thing. This is a highly recommended read.
Rating: Summary: A great suspenseful novel which gradually creeps you out Review: This author was recommended to me by an online book group and I am oh so glad that I took the recommendation! Wow, is this book suspenseful. It grows on you. I really had trouble putting it down. Due writes in a way that immediately captures the reader's attention. David DOES seem like the perfect husband and Due slowly unpeels the many layers (lies) of this character and his interactions with the rest of his family and in-laws. I can't wait to read the sequel!
Rating: Summary: Cover- to- Cover Creepy Review: I had such a strong response to this book. I found myself shaking my fist, and on the verge of tears toward the end. Dawit is as selfish as he is mysterious. The author builds slowly to the disastrous end. Not one character is left undeveloped. I hope to see more about Jessica in later work. This was my first Tananarive Due novel. What a page turner.
