Rating: Summary: Fun read - Good supernatural themed book Review: I'd have never read this book (or others in this series) had I seen it on the shelf. The cover artwork for the UK/Australian versions of Laurell's books look like something aimed at the Lara Croft market. I'd had these books recommended by friends and after checking the reviews here decided to give the books a go. "Guilty Pleasures" introduces us to Anita Blake, and the narrative often takes the form of internl monologue - it didn't take long to get used to and became quite engaging. Anita herself likes to give the impression that she's tough as nails - but the readers are privy to her thoughts and know better. I highly recommend "Guilty Pleasures" to anybody who enjoys the supernatural.
Rating: Summary: Loved it..... Review: I believe this is the 1st book in the series and maybe I'm a little inpatient but I notice she never explains things outside the story line. With that said I loved this book she seems a bit prudish but some people like that, me I'm hoping thing heat up. I am really surprised at how good this book was there were no dull moments, I wanted more and so I will be reading a lot more of her stuff.
Rating: Summary: A fun afternoon/evening read Review: This book, the 1st in the series, introduces Anita Blake a young woman who raises zombies for a living and, on the side, executes vampires. If that wasn't enough, she meets a French vampire, Jean-Claude and starts to fall for him. The series goes downhill from there. At first, the series is humorous, horrific, but tongue-in-cheek. THe action is good and Anita is a tough cookie. But as the series progresses, the plot focuses more on the relationships between the various characters and less on alternative realities. The action becomes more gruesome and less humorous while the sex scenes are more graphic. I think the writer lost her way and was given bad advice or maybe she was just letting her fantasies get the best of her. I stopped reading them after the 5th book. It just got boring.
Rating: Summary: Guilty Pleasures Review: Once I began reading this book, I couldn't wait to finish reading it. It's loaded with interesing characters. I like the way the vampires are the traditional type with added contemporay features like some are freindly to humans--some are not. Didn't like the concept of wererats too much, but this is no biggy. Definitely worth reading
Rating: Summary: The book that got me hooked Review: I first heard about this book when I was in seventh grade during a radio interview with the author and picked it up simply becasue I thought it was cool that an author was writing about my home city. After reading it, though, I was completely hooked to the series and have read every book multiple times. Anita is an original, strong, sarcastic, independent, and completely wonderful character the equal of which I have yet to see...The cat and mouse game between Anita and Jean-Claude is enthralling, and the plot behind the sexual tension stands strong on it's own. Tres bien. BUY IT!!!!! :)
Rating: Summary: Not guilty Review: Part soap opera, but vampire/detective story, all fun! I'm not going to feel even the slightest bit guilty about admitting just how pleasurable of a read this is.If you're looking for something that's going to grab you everywhere that counts--somethings that's by turns kind of naughty and kind of smart--"Guilty Pleasures" is it. The first in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, "Guilty Pleasures" is a first-person account of the sassy and strong-willed Anita Blake's often-tormenting experiences as a vampire slayer. It's not always easy to deny your urges, but most of the time, that's just part of the job for Anita. As she says at the end of the book, "I don't date vampires; I kill them." Anita is a static-emitting ball of contradictions, and I'm sure you'll be glad to have made her acquaintance.
Rating: Summary: Worth the Risk Review: I was looking for something in this genre after being disappointed so many times by so many authors. This book was wonderful. I didn't realize what I was getting myself involved in, but I'm on the 7th book of this series with no regrets. You fall in love with the characters...especially Anita and you just can't wait to see where the next adventure will take you. If you're looking for a really good read, but something relatively easy to follow and truly consistent, I think you'll find these books to be great. They are satisfying and definitely leave you wanting more, but they aren't cheesy. Ladies, you'll just fall in love with Jean Claude...
Rating: Summary: I bet you can't read just one! Review: Absolute trash! Words cannot not express just how great this series is! Much like junk food... you just can't keep your hands off of this book. I liken it to the Velveeta dip that you know is just so bad, but it's still too good to not eat. Well, the Anita Blake stories are the same. Technically, not the best book, character wise, a bit two-dimensional, but story wise, ooh is it Good! This is a FUN read!
Rating: Summary: guilty pleasure Review: The Anita Blake vampire series is excellent. If you were like me (looking for a new author and a new series), look no further. Laurell K Hamilton is a terrific writer; she blends all the right aspects of fiction/fantasy/sci-fi and a wee bit 'o sex in her books. Pick this one up today.
Rating: Summary: A new Anita Blake fan is born Review: 'Guilty Pleasures' was the first 'Anita Blake' book I've read, and I was rivited from page one. I like Anita, Ms. Hamilton does and excellent job of writing a tough and humane heroine. One of the best things about this book was the pacing, it moves fast and I found myself completely caught up in the action. I started reading in the afternoon and finished the book around 2:00 a.m., it was that good. I am now devoted to the series and I can't wait to see what Anita does next. Also, Jean-Claude is a great vampire hero, I hope that he and Anita end up together.
