Summary: A joy to read
Review: I am sorry, but I have read both Hamilton as well as Huff and Lackey is comparible if not better than quite a few of their novels. Diana Tregarde is an amazing character who, in Children of the Night, portrays herself vividly. The second book of a series, it lacks quite a bit of her history. If you seek a deeper understanding of Diana herself the first book has slightly more. Another of Lackey's joyous little habits is spreading the history of her characters out over books when contained ina series. Part of why I enjoy her books so much. I have read many books by Lackey and this was merely my first. It inspired me too seek out more tales by here as they kept me spellbound and reading into the wee hours of the morning. The tale was rich and vibrant, the characters deep and creative (if not entirely original, but that goes for most writers), and the tale wound itself wonderfully easy for either the reader following the series or a new reader venturing into Lackey's tales. I have nothing bad to say about this tale except, perhaps, it could have been deeper into the relationships that seemed slightly shallow. (However, a few tales in Werehunter relating to Diana Tregarde quickly remidied that)

Summary: I want to see more novels like this!!
Review: I love the character of Diana Trigarde. She is tough and smart and a modern day witch. It was fun to read about monsters and magic in the modern day city of New York. I'd love to see Diana Trigarde team up with Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter some day.

Summary: I loved it
Review: I love this book and have read it several times. This book actually got me started reading Lackey's works. And to disagree with some of the other reviews, yes I did start reading it in my teens but I still like it now. And as to the omission of the sex scenes but still having a gay couple, one has to look at when this book was originally written. It was REissued in 1994, meaning it was written back in teh 80s I believe. And as to the omission of the sex scenes, this book is not a romance novel, and I believe that the omission of the scenes prods one to use their imagination, and in my opinion, they weren't neccessary. It has a great plot with interesting characters and some interesting ideas in it, that although might not be possible, it is a work of fiction and to be enjoyed as such. And I thought the characters were very entertaining and believable. All in all, it's a book deffinately worth reading.

Summary: The beginning of a hit series with an unforgetable lead.
Review: I loved this book cover to cover. The first thing I did was log onto Amazon.com to look for more books based upon the lead, Diana Tregarde. My disappointment at not finding any is only healed by the hope Mercedes will soon put out other investigations by Diana. Children of the Night is a perfect blend of my supernatural favorites, and all with excellent character to match.

Summary: Decently-written (if you don¿t read Huff or Hamilton)
Review: I purchased this book largely on the strength of Amazon readers' reviews, and I was disappointed. I can only assume that most of the reviewers were young (perhaps reviewers should be required to give their ages). What I found stimulating as a teen would not make my current late 20's reading list, and this book isn't in the four-to-five star range. I would consider it slightly better than average.

Comparisons with Tanya Huff and Laurell K. Hamilton are inescapable. Huff and Hamilton both feature strong female protagonists involved with vampiric lovers. In particular, Lackey's characters pale beside Hamilton's Anita Blake and her French vampire consort Jean Claude. Lackey's characters lack depth. A reader would be hard pressed to describe Di or Andre outside of this novel's particular plot conventions, while Hamilton's Anita and Jean Claude are life-like, down to mannerisms and speech patterns. Hamilton and Huff's characters are witty, sharp, and sexually potent. I was disappointed by the tactful omission of the sex scenes between Di and Andre. While Lackey is progressive enough to feature a gay male couple, apparently grown-up sex is still too risqué. As for the assertion that this novel is "realistic", Lackey's Di (able to defeat demons and protect the general populace), when desperately in need of a gun, has apparently never heard of a "credit card." Realism, this is not.

In conclusion, this is decently-written fluff, but not comparable to the works of the better female authors of this sci-fi/horror genre.

Summary: A good read, but I expect more from Lackey
Review: I really enjoy Mercedes Lacky's books, and I am upset she seems to have abandoned the Tregarde series. I thought her departure from Valdemar and bards refreshing. If you like these, you will definately like the Laurell K. Hamilton "Anita Blake -- Vampire Hunter" series.

Summary: Entertaining but light reading.
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this and the other Diane Tregarde books. It is a shame the Ms. Lackey had to suspend writing about this character because of obsessive fan reactions.

Summary: A superb novel....romantic and realistically frightening.
Review: I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire read....I couldn't put it down! If you enjoy reading about the occult and like a little romance, you'll love this book. Mercedes Lackey has a real talent. "Children of the Night" was so paralyzingly realistic that I thought that it was, perhaps, based on a true story. It's surely the kind of book you want to read more than once. I'm definately going to read it again.

Summary: Good but was dragging in some parts
Review: I've been an avid fan of Mercedes Lackey for sometime. I read Jinx High before I read Children of the Night. Children really explained a lot of things that I didn't understand in Jinx High. I enjoyed the novel for the dark atmosphere yet it was riddle with humor. I really liked it. Vampires of the traditional and the pyschic! Magick and gypsies! Lackey was able to blend all of these wonderful elements with the grace of her words. Great Book!

Summary: Fun to read, hard to put down
Review: It was very exciting to read and I was pleased with the favorable portrayal of Pagans in general, and especially Wicca. It was very time-line accurate and teaches a valuable lesson. I loved it.
