Summary: Good, but have you seen it before?
Review: "Children of the Night" handles the premise of a modern day witch well. Only problem I had is that is actually an expanded version of one of her stories that appeared earlier in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine. Still, the addition of subplots really helps clarify the storyline

Summary: Dull...a waste of time and money
Review: (...)So I bought this book, "Children of the Night," and began reading it and since I had spent money for it and kept hoping that at some point it would half-way live up to my expectations, I kept reading. Putting it down and then trying to read it some more and now, two days since I began it, I have finally read it and am here to warn anyone who expects greatness, that this book is NOT that. I found it one of the dullest books I've read. It was readable, barely. Which is why I give it 2 stars instead of one. Had I not been expecting a good book, maybe I would have found it worthy of two and a half or three stars. Still, I was SO disappointed.

Summary: good vampire read
Review: A good vampire read. I think that I like Tanya Huff or Laurell Hamilton better but this one was enjoyable. A bit slow at the beginning. Lackey's Burning Water was better.

Summary: Completely Entertaining
Review: All books in the series are very entertaining. Couldn't put the book down. I, too, wish Ms. Lackey would write more in the series. I keep looking for more.

Summary: Simply marvelous!
Review: Can't say enough about the Diana Tragarde books except don't stop writing about her. She is a kick butt heroine who can take care of herself!

Summary: My personal favorite
Review: Children of the Night was the first Mercedes Lackey book I had ever read. Since then I have gobbled up every single book she has written with enthusiasm. Misty is surely one of the best if not THE best Fantasy author around. Di Trgarde is my favorite character in all of her many works followed closely by Kerowyn in the Vows and Honor series. If you are a fan of Misty, you will love this book. Please please please give it a try if you are not.

Summary: Great plot
Review: Children of the Night wins the award for best Diana Tregarde book. It was fast-paced and exciting. I'm an avid "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" watcher and I was thouroughly impressed with Misty's take on vampires. I don't read much urban fantasy, but this book was great!

Summary: A great work of horror by Mercedes Lackey
Review: Diana Tregarde is a guardian. This means she has certain magical powers and is required to help anyone in need of magical assistance that asks her. Very few people know of this. When they see Diana they see a follower of the pagan faith who writes romance novels. One day when she's working in an occult shop to make ends meet she runs across a gypsy boy who needs her help. She helps breaks his trail and sends him on his way. Soon after that he is found dead on her doorstep, with what looks like a vampire leering over them. Diana soon finds out about psivamps, vampires with much different killing methods than simple vamps. With the help of her friends and an attractive French vampire named Andre, she knows that it's her duty as a guardian to solve this mystery, to stop these killers.

Across town Diana's ex-boyfriend, Dave, is falling into some very dangerous activities. After he and the rest of his band take some strange drugs they wake up the next morning feeling horrible. But when the band plays the next night they feel more alive than ever before. They're turning into something strange, and Dave is the only one that seems to realize that what they're turning into is something wrong. How will he deal with this?

Like many I was surprised upon hearing about the Diana Tregarde series. Mercedes Lackey write horror fiction? After hearing about the controversy surrounding the books I had to read them. I was very impressed. Children of the Night is a strong novel about guardians, gypsies, and vampires. Although the writing novel is not as strong as some of her later Valdemar novels the book is still very good. The character of Diana Tregarde manages to be strong without being too powerful. The supporting characters of Kenny, Keith are a bit underdeveloped but still good. Before reading Children of the Night all of the novels I had read by Mercedes Lackey were Valdemar. This novel has persuaded me to branch out to read her other works.

I also realize that this novel has faced many controversies. One is very dangerous. It can be read about on Mercedes Lackey's official site. It explains why she isn't writing and more Diana Tregarde novels. The other controversies are that her books are too much like Hamilton and Huff's vampire novels. Although I can't speak about the Huff novels I have read a few of the Anita Blake novels. I actually found this to be more interesting than the Hamilton ones. I recommend this to fans of Mercedes Lackey and horror novels.

Summary: Fair
Review: For not reading any of her other books and purchasing it out of pure curiousity I'd have to say it's an interesting book with a strong hold on it's plot. Though the story only drew me in the end and the begining was far from what I would expect I still enjoyed it.

Summary: A joy to read
Review: I am sorry, but I have read both Hamilton as well as Huff and Lackey is comparible if not better than quite a few of their novels. Diana Tregarde is an amazing character who, in Children of the Night, portrays herself vividly. The second book of a series, it lacks quite a bit of her history. If you seek a deeper understanding of Diana herself the first book has slightly more. Another of Lackey's joyous little habits is spreading the history of her characters out over books when contained ina series. Part of why I enjoy her books so much. I have read many books by Lackey and this was merely my first. It inspired me too seek out more tales by here as they kept me spellbound and reading into the wee hours of the morning. The tale was rich and vibrant, the characters deep and creative (if not entirely original, but that goes for most writers), and the tale wound itself wonderfully easy for either the reader following the series or a new reader venturing into Lackey's tales. I have nothing bad to say about this tale except, perhaps, it could have been deeper into the relationships that seemed slightly shallow. (However, a few tales in Werehunter relating to Diana Tregarde quickly remidied that)
