Rating: Summary: Beautifully worded, stylish, intelligent, but needs more Review: Clive Barkers talent with words shows through from page one. This man can take a horrible event and make it SOUND picturesque. The cenobites are here in all their glory, but they're not shown enough for my liking, and aren't sketched out one bit. The other characters also aren't - they seemed to be multi-dimensional but not enough is known about them. The pace of the novel is strong and swift, but it could have worked out better in a longer length. One thing that remains memorable is the superb atmosphere; dark, damp, depressing, gripping, haunting, and so much more than even that. This is an entertaining, thought-provoking book that disturbs, creeps the reader out, and keeps them reading - but it's just not that memorable when everything is said and done.
Rating: Summary: "Julia... It's Frank... Blood" Review: From the twisted imagination of Clive Barker comes the chilling inspiration for his film "Hellraiser." The story goes something like this: a sexual adventurer named Frank, in search of new pleasures, obtains a puzzle box said to give him the kind of experiences he desires in a third-world country. He brings it back to his London home and, after a time, solves it, unleashing sadomasochistic demons from Hell known as the Cenobites. Some time later, Frank's brother Rory and his wife Julia move into the house. When Rory's blood drops onto the floor of the attic where the Cenobites took Frank, Frank manages to escape the Cenobites and come back, albeit as a very weak and fleshless creature. When Julia discovers him, he convinces her to lure men into the house and spill their blood so that he can fully come back as a human before the Cenobites track him down and bring him back for good. While the book is rather short (I read it it one day, actually, but I'm a fast reader), it's endlessly entertaining - I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended, and then after you've read this, watch Hellraiser (if you have a strong stomach). It's just as good as the book.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not satisfying... Review: Good stuff as far as conservative horror goes, but lacking the substance, cleverness, or imagination to produce a memorable experience. VERY quick read. If you have read a lot of horror, this book will probably disappoint. Still, its a lot of fun for a 2-hour book, just don't expect the depth of Clive Barker's other books.
Rating: Summary: Hellraiser's Story Is A Nice Introduction To Clive's Work. Review: Hellraiser is one of the best horror movies of all time...never mind the sequels. This Novella The Hellbound Heart is the story it was based on. It is an excellent little read and was my introduction to the wonderful world of Clive Barker.
Rating: Summary: A Damn Good Piece of Art Review: I am a fan of all of the Hellraiser movies, so I expected the book to be even better. It really was! Clive Barker plays with grammar just liked the cenobites played with Frank. He has a way of using grammar like no other author that I have read. The details in this novella are great!! Mr. Barker kept me wanting more after I finished the book. I will most definitely buy more of his work.
Rating: Summary: A very good horror novel Review: I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the book better than the film it inspired (Hellraiser), the book left more to the imagination and allowed a better insight into the characters in the story. This was the first long story (i.e. not short story) that I have read by clive barker. I now intend to read some more of his longer works like 'The Damnation Game' and 'Cabal'. This short novel was very well written and had a very good storyline, I would recommend it to any horror fan. I may very well read this book again soon. Although I really enjoyed this book I don't feel it is of five star quality, it's nearly there but not quite. If I could give four and a half stars I would.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book on Man's Depravity and the Human Heart Review: I first came across this book hesitant and unsure of what to expect. I had already seen the Hellraiser movie and I thought I might have been disappointed because I already knew the storyline. However, after reading this book I realized that Clive Barker tells things better on ink and paper than on a movie screen. Even with all the guts and gore in the book the reason why the book captures me so much is the fact that Barker tries to show us what is inside the hearts of people. The actual theme of the book is what makes this book fascinating not the blood and suspense. This is a true horror story if there ever was one. The Cenobites also add to the intrigue and horror to the book. The Cenobites are demons who offer limitless pleasure to all the senses only to realize afterwards that they are only interested in pain and suffering. The introduction of the book gets the mood going and afterwards it will want to make you want to read more. The interaction between Frank and Julia also adds to the fascination of the story. Frank's character you could say depicts the restless and ceaseless anguish of mankind looking for something "beyond" what this world offers. Frank shows us that human beings are beings that are driven for the need for lust, pleasure, and sensory satisfaction. That people will even go beyond moral imperatives to satisfy their carnal passions and live life as if it was one sensory experience. Though this view of man presented by Barker seems dismal and discouraging, he does teach us the unfortunate condition of man on earth. Barker does a good job showing us the horrors contained within man's heart and where it can lead us if our desires are not contained.
