Rating: Summary: Fifth and Final Book in the Cutler Family Series Review: "Darkest Hour," the fifth and final book in the Cutler family series, takes place in--where else?--the South, on a Virginia plantation called The Meadows. It's owned by Lillian Booth's family, which consists of her parents, her religious older sister (Emily), and her sickly younger sister (Eugenia--which, Cutler fans will notice, was Dawn Longchamp's proper first name).Lillian, who is better known as simply Grandmother Cutler in this series, has about the same life as most other V. C. Andrews heroines. Her innocence is lost over the years when 1) she discovers a shocking family secret: that her parents aren't really her parents, 2) two people close to her die (Eugenia and her first boyfriend, Niles Thompson), and 3) she's raped by her uncle, resulting in an unwanted pregnancy. ... Probably my favorite part in "Darkest Hour," though it is rather morbid, is when Lillian's young boyfriend dies after sneaking out of her bedroom window one night, and he's found "the next morning, crumpled beside the house, his neck broken from the fall." This was an interesting twist to the book since most boyfriends live until the very end. His death is just one of many things that make Lillian believe her older sister--that she is, in fact, evil; that everything she does turns to pot (to put it in Amazon.com-friendly terms). While her self-esteem plummets, Lillian creates a shell around herself to resist any more pain, turning her into the hard woman that she is later renowned for in this series. Although I wasn't really into the Cutler family series (I enjoyed the Dollanganger and Casteel ones a lot more), "Darkest Hour" is one the remaining few books that still seems to resemble an original V. C. Andrews plot. After this series, most of the others are just copycats of the same old incestuous story line.
Rating: Summary: Should've have ended with the beginning of Dawn Review: ...because remember how Gardens of Shadows ended with the beginning of Flowers in the Attic? That's how Darkest Hour should've have ended or am I missing something? I love the way they thoroughly explained Lilian's youth and what she had to put up with and I felt sorry for her. You can tell that this really took place in the really old days, where's the cars? Dawn just went through almost the same stuff that Lilian did and they both had to put up with Emily and Lilian wasn't really Dawn's grandmother anyway, but her stepmom, it's probably why they resented each other. Overall, it was a great book.
Rating: Summary: Really sad, but really good. Review: A really sad book; you almost cry right along with Lillian when she endures the cruelty of her father and sister, and when tragedy strikes again and again. Be sure to read Dawn, and find yourself wondering, as I did, how a sweet little girl like Lillian could turn into such an old witch!
Rating: Summary: This book was great! Review: Along with the rest of the series, especially Dawn, I loved it! Who knew Grandmother Cutler lived the life she did! Knowing what a terrible life she'd had, you'd think she'd have more compassion for Dawn. Reading this book, I was able to feel some compassion for Grandmother Cutler, and understand why she was the way she was. I admire her streanth and pride in herself!
Rating: Summary: Exceptional story. Review: At some times during this book the hypocrisy and irony of her fathers bible spouting made me angry. Here was a man who forced everyone one around him to obey him and the bible. Yet he drank he cheated on his wife and he gambled. Emily's torture(torture is the only word for it) of Lilian ,and constant taunting made me feel for Lilian. This book stirred my emotions and cry for the kitten so coldly killed by Emily. And cry for Lilian losing her true love at such a young age.
Rating: Summary: Even if you do not read DAWN read DARKEST Hour!! Review: Darkest Hour was one of the best books that I have ever read! The Cutler family series was wonderful! It was the best series that I have yet read by Mrs. Andrews', although Flowers In the Attic and Petals on the Wind are the best books. While reading Dawn, Secrets of the Morning and Tarnished Gold or even Midnight Whispers I never thought that I would feel sorry for Grandmother Cutler (Lillian) until I read this book! Even if you don't read Dawn read this book it was great!
Rating: Summary: V.C. Andrews Seems to Repeat... Review: Even though I'm a big V.C. Andrews fan, I still feel that these books repeat themselves. For example, we have women who are so GORGEOUS that men have to rape them to "teach them what they should know". Then they marry, and usually their husbands stray away... but the women always forgive them, or don't confront them at all. Have you read the Dollanganer series by V.C. Andrews? All of these books have a ring to it! The gets raped, has an evil sibling... hello? Do you sense a trend here? Still, I enjoyed this very predictable book.
Rating: Summary: A real page-turner! Review: Even though this book is similar to others, it still managed to keep me awake all night untill I finished it. I was taken in at the very begining by Lillian, and was crying by the end of the first chapter. A wonderful tale, told by a master storyteller!
Rating: Summary: she hit the right spot in my heart! Review: Every book of VC Andrews are in some way dark, this one was one of the darkest book of hers, well of the Ghost Writer, it's him who wrote this one and he did a very good job. It's a fast reading, a page turner. If you like VC Andrews novels read this one.
