Rating: Summary: Unbelievable! Review: This book was completely and utterly engrossing. I couldn't put it down. It was, without question in my mind, the best book of Harris' four. The ending is shocking. Hannibal Lecter is, once again, a fascinating character, as is new bad guy Mason Verger. This is one that does not disappoint, from beginning to end. Do yourself a buyer and read this one.
Rating: Summary: Haunting, if sketchy Review: Unlike "Red Dragon" and "The Silence of The Lambs", in "Hannibal" Thomas Harris tries to give some rationalization to Hannibal Lecter's behavior and illuminates some of the doctor's background. Hannibal Lecter has to be one of the more fascinating characters in modern literature, and this novel cements it. Lecter is definitely a psychopath, but he is not necessarily a monster--his favorite victims seem to be men with their own sadistic/sociopathic tendencies, like Mason Verger, a victim of Lecter's whose hunt for the doctor is an integral part of the plot. Mason Verger is thoroughly despicable--we learn early on that he was a child rapist, one of his victims being his own sister. Harris obviously wants the reader to think that Lecter did the world a favor by paralyzing Verger (I won't mention what else the good doctor did). Inspector Pazzi, who discovers Lecter living in Florence and decides to turn him in for Mason Verger's massive reward, is also presented as a glory-hungry egomaniac who tries to regain his stature at all costs. FBI Deputy Director Paul Krenzler, with his harassment of Clarice Starling, cements a place on Lecter's list as well. This is Lecter's show, make no mistake--Clarice Starling, the focus of "The Silence of The Lambs," is illuminated only by Lecter's interest in her. I would have liked to have read more about Lecter's background--the hints Harris drops are fascinating, and I wouldn't be surprised if his next book really goes into detail--but in the end even Harris' haunting, highly visual writing can't save a very predictable ending. This is definitely not a book for the squeamish (I made the mistake of reading the part about Hannibal's last victim while eating breakfast) but a lot of the language will stay with you, and you'll never look at pigs quite the same way again.
Rating: Summary: Don't Bother Review: We would have been better off if Thomas Harris had never written this book. He has taken two exceptional characters and completely ruined them. I guess Harris just ran our of ideas for this one. If you liked "Red Dragon" and "Silence of The Lambs", do yourself a favor and don't read this book.
Rating: Summary: I waited how long for this trash? Review: As a huge fan of Thomas Harris, I had waited forever for his next book following the Silence of the Lamb. What a heart wrenching disappointment! The book moves very slowly and reads more like a tour guide or an arts history textbook on Italy than a psycho thriller. In my opinion, it seemed that Harris got tired of writing about 2/3 through and just threw some ending together. I wish that he would have called me to write the ending, because I certainly could have done better. I can't imagine what happened to Harris's creativity when it came to the ending, perhaps he let Clive Barker finish it, or maybe his grandson. This book in no way resembles his previous masterpieces. Save your time and choose another.
Rating: Summary: Pure gore Review: From the sublime terror of Silence of the Lambs Hannibal sinks to the level of simply pandering to those fans of the gory "B" flic horror genre such as Jason and Freddie. The gloss of sophistication is belied by the stereotypical characters that are all too predictable. Sorry, but for me this sequel is a bust.
Rating: Summary: Review for Hannibal by Lyndsi J. Review: This book by Thomas Harris is a very intense and wonderful book. Just when you are ready to set it down something new happens and you don't dare put it down. The ending is very shocking and you have to read the whole book to get it. You might even want to read Silence of the Lambs before this one because then you get the whole story. This is definitely the best book I have ever read!
Rating: Summary: Get thee to thine bookstore Review: Left wanting more from The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal arrives complete with a quasi-fleshing out of Doctor Lecter. The reader descends into the depths of Harris' mind, and there finds an even more vile creature than Lecter, namely Mason Verger. Complete with the requisite scars from his prior meeting with the good doctor, Harris creates Verger as the perfect antagonist. This novel escapes from the pedestal of five stars only because we are left wanting to know more about Lecter. Harris has an exquisite talent for creating ambiance and his knowledge of Florence, Italy adds accurate detail to the reader familiar with this region. Enough said. Get thee to thine bookstore, before Dr Lecter appears again on the silver scrren.
Rating: Summary: Clearly a festive comeback... Review: Hannibal is back and kicking! I consumed the book in one night. The narrative is impressive, and the plot exuberating. Harris proved himself once again. The twist at the end is magnificent. To all the fans of Dr. Lecter, this is a must!
Rating: Summary: zzzzzzzzzz Review: i am an avid book reader, and have read more books than i can remember. i must say though, this is the first book that has ever challanged me to stay awake.....needless to say, i couldn't manage to get through it! i hope to goodness the movie is better, because "Silence of the Lambs" was and will always be one of my favorite movies.
Rating: Summary: Fine gastronomie. Review: Don't let the chance to read this wonderful book pass just because most of people haven't loved it. I am sure the point is it's not they haven't liked the story, it's just they are horrified by the way the story ends. Forget everything you suppose to be normal. Open up your mind on what makes Hannibal such a genial monster. The story gives many details on who is Hannibal, what makes a normal person becomes a marginal. That story is so well-written I couldn't stop reading until the end. I must confess I was very shocked but I just had a couple of porto and then I understood many things. Now, you have read many reviews, you know something very weird will happen. Just think that the thin line between madness and genius is something normal for a person as Hannibal. Don't expect the Hollywood sauce. Just try to understand... Amazing and disturbing !
