Rating: Summary: Great story, but I wasn't crazy about the performance. Review: This is a great story. Harris is one of those guys who would rather write an interesting and compelling story than pander to the screenwriters who will inevitably butcher his work. The only reason I gave this four stars instead of five was that I wasn't crazy about the reader (unabridged audio version). He did a great voice for Hannibal Lector, but his stuffy, fake-sounding British accent did nothing for Starling's voice or anyone else's. Overall he was good, but not great.
Rating: Summary: Is this a joke? Review: I give it one star only because there is not a zero star.I could not believe how disappointing this book is. I feel T. Harris must have been playing a joke on his readers. I once read that he claims he doesn't like to write this kind of book, but that is what the public wants. He must have decided to give us what we want and do it to disgusting extremes. The ending, the characters, and the plot are dissapointing,to be polite. I might get my money's worth from the bokk this winter if I burn it for fuel in the fireplace.
Rating: Summary: A Thrilling read with a very dissappointing ending. Review: I agree with many of the other reviewers about the ending. I've read Harris' other two books about Dr. Lector and looked forward to this one. I enjoyed the background on Hannibal and Harris' writing is top notch. Clarice's career and the infighting at FBI rings true. Crawford, however is just a cardboard image of his former self. I found it fascinating right up to the last chapter. The ending just doesn't match Starling's character.
Rating: Summary: Worst Possible Ending Review: Of all the ways Harris could have ended this book, the ending he chose is easily the worst. The plot of the book is average, and the book lacks the eerieness and the mystery of the first two books, and in parts of the book, Harris uses Italian prases and then doesn't translate them for you. Early in the book, Dr. Lecter has the same presence as in the first two, but by the end his image is ruined. Harris changes him so much that I wished I had never picked up the book because it has ruined The Silence of the Lambs, and The Red Dragon for me.
Rating: Summary: Psychological thriller nearly at its best. Review: I believe the book is very good. It is not only very exciting to read (I only had a one hour break from start to finish), but it has more. Harris manages to show, that no person is born good or evil, but the circumstances of our lives makes us the people we are - and more importantly shows that we are able to change. This book is not only thrilling, but gives an exciting glimpse of how human psychology works. Only problem is, that a few minor characters are not believeble.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A WORTHLESS BOOK Review: What happened to Starling? No one in their right mind would give any credence to the plot resolution of this book. I cannot think of a single reason why anyone would read it. Please don't waste your time or money.
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful and gory but a very poor ending. Review: Starling character too shallow while Lechter's character was really expanded upon through his youth and early adulthood. Enjoyed meeting Mason Verger( sick as he is) but I thought the story line was not as deep as it could have gone. It kept me at the edge for a good part of the book , but the ending was easily forgotten.
Rating: Summary: What A Letdown! Review: This book was great, but was killed in the last few chapters by an unbelievable climax. It was trying to stray from the usual thriller ending, but failed miserably. It was a true letdown, I was hooked from beginning until the last chapter. If you're reading it. Stop!
Rating: Summary: A great read. Particularly the last 100 or so pages. Review: Thomas Harris really can spin a yarn. One has to wonder how his imagination can conjure up such horrific deeds and acts. One also has to marvel at his command of the subtle nuances of the different classes of people in the world ranging from career government employees to Sardanians to the ultra sophisticated. It really is amazing and I can understand why he might be able to write such a book only every 10 years or so.I could not put this book down, particularly towards the end. Read and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Hannibal! He is baaaaaaaack! Review: This book only got four stars because I was disappointed with the ending. Dr. Lecter and Clarice Starling seem to get out of character toward the end. It is still worth picking up. Harris is great at putting disturbing images in your head.
