Summary: What a book!
Review: I just love King's short stories, and this brilliant book contains 20 of the really good ones. His foreword is pretty interesting, but the stories-WOW! Mostly, I'm a guy for the supernatural stuff, but King really makes some unforgettable psychological tales, too. My favorites in this book are Jerusalem's Lot (creepy epistolary Lovecraft/Poe pastiche), The Mangler (the movie version didn't treat the story very well), Children of the Corn (again, the movie version was a bit out of control), Gray Matter, Sometimes They Come Back (faithful and good movie version, except for the sweet-son stuff), The Lawnmower Man (not faithful to King's story, but watchable), Quitters, Inc. and One for the Road. I like all the stories and if anyone out there haven't read King yet, I say: Read this book first, then all his novels!

Summary: King knows what you need...
Review: ...and he delivers most of the time in this series of short stories. From "Quitters Inc." (the mob runs a smokers clinic) to "Strawberry Spring" (college decapitation) to "The Ledge" (tennis star scuffles with pigeon 40 stories up) to "The Man Who Loved Flowers" (bludgeoning and roses) to "I know What You Need" (nerd sorcerer seduces girl) this book rarely disappoints. Read and enjoy!

Summary: I LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review: I never really liked short stories until I picked up NIGHT SHIFT. The twenty short stories it contained chilled my bones (and so far, seven of the twenty have been made into movies). If you read closely, you will realize that several of King's novels written after NIGHT SHIFT are foreshadowed in this collection, such as the huge spider living in the sewer system under Maine (It, mentioned in the short story, 'Gray Matter') and also the superflu from THE STAND, in 'Night Surf', another short story. Some of my favorite stories from this book include, 'Children of the Corn', 'Quitters, Inc.', 'The Boogeyman', 'Graveyard Shift', and 'Gray Matter'.

Summary: An absolute must for every dorm room bookshelf
Review: This is the perfect book of short stories for reading from time to time. There is a great mix of supernatural King(The Boogieman) and all-to-real horror stories(The Man Who Loved Flowers). Read "Strawberry Spring"; every word. Then build up your courage and read it again. Beautifully written and absolutely petrifying.

Summary: Enjoyably Wicked Fast-Paced Stories.
Review: When I was eight years old (which would have been around 1986), I owned a copy of this book. Then, I loaned it out to someone and it was gone from my life forever. Alas, I can honestly say that I never did actually get to read the whole collection, but I did read most of it. Pretty scary stuff. Even though some might say that Stephen King has matured quite a lot since Carrie, Christine, Pet Semetary, and Night Shift, the earlier works do retain some of the more scarier stories. The gore level is also up a notch in Night Shift than it is in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. And yes, the Boogeyman did scare the bejesus out of me - especially at that age. Kudos to Mr. King and to the great collection of his short stories I will probably never see again!

Summary: Very Good Stories
Review: I read the stories The Lawnmower Man, Battleground, Children of the Corn, The Boogeyman, and The Man Who Loved Flowers. All of them were very good and suspenseful.

Summary: Some Great Early Works
Review: Many Great stories, some bad ones. These are Stephen King's early works. Jerusalems Lot is one of his best.

Summary: great collection of short horror stories
Review: If you like fast-paced short stories, this is the book for you. It was my first Stephen King reading. "The Ledge" continues to haunt my memory.

Summary: Look out, there's something behind you!
Review: This book was my second King book I read after It. Sure, I'm only ten years old, but this book was amazing! My favorites from this book were Children of the Corn,The Ledge, and The Boogeyman. When I read THe Boogeyman, I actually believed there was something in my closet! If you're lookin' for some scaaary stories to read at bedtime,READ NIGHT SHIFT!(And stay away from the closets)

Summary: interesting at the time
Review: I remember reading "Night Shift" for the first time years ago, it being my first exposure to Stephen King. I was floored. I couldn't believe that someone could combine the craziness that lurks in all of us with small-town American icons so well. "Battlegroud" remains one of my all-time favorite King works, probably because it conjures up all those images of playing with army men on a rainy Saturday. The book still sticks in my mind as an entertaining, imaginative romp into darkness.
