Summary: Great Book! However....
Review: if you are undergoing any type of counseling or hypnosis (as I am for an eating disorder)this book will scare the h**l out of you. Story is very real and could very well happen. Characters are well developed. You really feel for Marti, Dusty, and Skeet. This book is great. I could not put it down. Another good one by Koontz.

Review: Dean R. Koontz ... I'm listening

Summary: What's Happening to Me?
Review: What's happening to me? This is the thought that plagues Martie Rhodes as her mind becomes a stranger and she finds she cannot trust herself. This is also the thought in my head as I read and actually enjoy this Dean Koontz thriller!

This is the fourth book by Koontz that I have attempted to read. I say "attempted" because, until False Memory, I had never been able to read more than five chapters of a Koontz book without putting it aside, never to pick it up again. There are few other books that I have refused to finish. I find his descriptive style and metaphoric expressions unsophisticated, like a bad example of writing in a high school literary magazine, yet pretentiousness - an inexcusable combination.

However, I was able to look past his language in this story because he establishes the elaborate plot so seamlessly. He appropriately allows little (and big) glimpses of how the mystery will unfold at all the right moments. The characters are not only likable (Even the evil guy is commendably evil.), but also plausible. And, most importantly, anybody could imagine himself falling victim to the horrors described.

This is a creative premise for a reality thriller, and it is carried out with no disappointments, and with just the right touch of explicit gore. This book propels itself. I found it entertaining, and almost redeeming for my least favorite writer.

Summary: Thin line between fiction and reality
Review: Although I found this book to be more than worthy of the title "thriller", the fact that it was so real made it all the more fascinating. Dean Koontz is a master of character design. Dusty and Martie Rhodes are very real. They could very well be our neighbors or friends. I can easily imagine them as real people because Koontz stends so much time on character development. Still, it is not in the least bit tedious.

This is one of those rare thriller that really makes you stop and think, "Could things like this really happen?". I believe that that is where the real value of False Memory as a thriller is. I had no problem believing the plot might really be something that could take place.

Summary: This is why we love you, Mr. Koontz!!!
Review: I am so thrilled with every book I've read by Dean Koontz. False Memory was the 33rd of his books that I have finished (started a few, but didn't finish for one reason or another), and I must say I am now in love with that talent more than ever. What characterization! Martie, Dusty, Skeet, Susan, and the hideously evil Dr. Ahriman.....you'll love the first four and hate the Doc! The basic story-line is about a Psychiatrist who brainwashes his patients to "play games" with them, often resulting in the patients' deaths. No hints about the details...gotta read it! Believe me, it's VERY worthwhile reading.

Summary: Extremely suspenseful, a bit overdone
Review: Why I enjoyed this book:

There is no doubt that Koontz's novel, False Memory, draws you in, prevents you from being able to easily close the book, and stays on your mind. The story waits with anticipation, ready for you to turn the next page and discover the next horrible or wonderful turn in events.

The characters are believable, lovable and hateful. The theme of mind-control is very haunting and frightening and is presented with skill.

When I was reading this book, I was consumed with the story; I couldn't wait to get home to read the next chapter. I was enchanted with some of the characters because of their very real personas. I was revolted by others because of their complex and hateful actions and motives.

Why I don't recommend it wholeheartedly:

Some of Koontz's characters, and some of his writing, was overdone. Koontz goes overboard making the antagonist more complexly horrible than necessary. As I learned who the "bad guy" was I was terrified of him as a threat to the protagonists and as a possible member of our society. But the more we learned about the evil that this character did, thought and believed, the less I believed that he might exist, and the less I was impressed by the creation of the character.

Occasionally, Koontz's words are distracting. Koontz's sophisticated writing style appeals to my taste, but every now and again his prose transforms from interesting to overstated. In addition, there were a few times that I skipped ahead of paragraphs that held onto a small and uninteresting part of the plot for way too long. This was not like skimming over the detailed descriptions that are found in Tom Clancy's books. It was getting past repetitive sentences that did not add to the story or my enjoyment of the book.

Overall...

I recommend this to anyone who is looking to be swept away by a good story. And I recommend it to anyone who enjoys being frightened by what is happening to characters that you have become attached to, and by what it would mean to you if one day fiction became reality.

Summary: Great portrayal of a real life sinister individual!
Review: Well rumors will be rumors but the parallels are too obvious and many of the fictional incidents in False Memory are so true to life. Many of us have to be keen to charlatans like Dr Ahriman (who is rumored to actually be Dpak Chopra). Maybe we will learn not to be so gullible! Great reading!!!

Summary: False Memory
Review: Koontz through this fictional medium makes an accurate portrayal of the sinister Dr Ahriman (rumored to be DEPAK CHOPRA) and how he has implanted many evil memories in his patients minds.

You will not put this book down once you pass page 225. Koontz is a master at paralleling fictional events with reality. I strongly advise all to read this book, as it will prevent you from being so gullible to charlans like Chopra.

Summary: Hypocritical jeremiad?
Review: I really, really enjoy Koontz' books, and this one is no exception. The theme of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances appeals to me on many levels. And the action scenes kept me on the edge of my chair -- particularly the one taking place on the high desert of New Mexico.

My problem is this: while Koontz is busy hectoring us about the decline of American society (self-obessions; vapidity; drug use; egomania; and a hilariously plausible appearance on Oprah) he's also contributing to it through his books. I mean, is it really a progression of American culture to read about a psychotic psychitrist who performed experiments on a baby, blew his mother up and removed his father's eyeballs?

Summary: Excellent, can't wait to turn the page story!!!
Review: The story starts out a bit slow, and I like to get right to the punch. However, once it picks up, its like a tractor trailer going down hill!!! I actually found myself verbally responding to this book. Even though you find out near the beginning of the story, who the "bad guy" is, it still has lots of twists and turns, it keeps you on the edge and will keep you reading 'til the whee hours of the morning! If you can get past the first few (or more) chapters, you'll really enjoy this book!
