Rating: Summary: Gripping, Fascinating B-Novel Review: The summer after my eighth-grade year, I picked up a copy of "Cold Fire" and literally could not put it down. Koontz's approach is dualistic; the first half of the novel is a gripping psychic adventure that, thematically, recalls Stephen King's "The Dead Zone." Rich in symbolism, it unfolds in a series of like episodes, and is written in vivid, haunting prose. The second half becomes almost completely occultic, Satanic, and abstract, as Koontz explores the backstory and source-of-power of the central character, Jim. As in Koontz's other novels, some dark events in the book are written with such clarity and attention to detail that I found it difficult to eat for days afterward. (One nauseating passage, in particular, involves a massacre at a "Dixie Duck" family restaurant. It is forever etched into my memory). Though the first half of "Cold Fire" is *much* more engaging and easier-to-grasp than the second, the work as a whole remains successful--a classic page-turner. One wonders why this little gem hasn't yet been adapted for television or the big screen.
Rating: Summary: Good start but then unravels. Review: This book has a great start with a man who can see disasters and accidents before they happen and travels around saving people from these disasters. Great premise, but then it go's downhill with a confusing storyline about a phychic monster in a pond by a windmill. weird
Rating: Summary: I couldn't finish it! Review: When I started this book, it was pretty good. The storyline was reminescent of Early Edition, where the main character knew of upcoming bad events and people to save and I enjoyed reading it. After the part with the plane, the book started to falter, and by the time the main characters went to the Windmill (sorry to be so specific, but I don't think it will ruin the story), the book was just plain terrible. The twist of the story was predictable and far fetched, so at page 380, I just put the book down. I didn't read the ending, and I don't even care.
Rating: Summary: grabs you by the Review: Again Koontz's ability to weave plot, characters and the unpredictable has produced a tapistry of infinite depth and rich in color. The ending was as original as it was gripping and this book remains to be one of his very best.It was the second Dean Koontz thriller I read and i hope far from the last.
Rating: Summary: So exciting I almost died of fear Review: I have read many great book written by the author of this book and all of them are great, thrilling and very exciting books. This was the first book I read written by Mr Koontz and the best. It keeps you on the edge from start to end and it`s almost impossible to put this book down. Some places in the book I almost wet my pants of fear. And this is this books greatest strenght that it frightens you so much. The characters are exciting and complex as well and you learn more and more about them as the story goes on. This book is also a lovestory about the main characters in the book. The book is filled with supernatural events and the special thing is that while in many other books I am fascinated by such things but never believe it I did in this book. And the end is brilliant. This book is not a excellent book compared to works by Shakespeare and Kafka, but it is an extreme enjoyable read. I did not provide me with the meaning of life but it really, really seduced me.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! If your new to Koontz read Watchers first. Review: I found this to be a very entertaining book. I don't recommend it for a first Koontz read however. Pick up a copy of Watchers first and then get yourself a copy of this. Yes I do admit it might get a little stranger around page 200, but isn't that what reading Koontz is all about, reading the unexpected?
Rating: Summary: Cold Fire Review: Dean Koontz is an excellent author and every one of his books leaves me wanting the next one. Recently I dug out all of our old Koontz paperbacks and have been reading them. I wrote this review mainly to ask this question to other fans of his. In most of his books, Dean qoutes The Book Of Counted Sorrows...I've searched and searched for this book and cannot find it! Please Help!
Rating: Summary: Not one of Koontz's best efforts Review: This book gets off to a great start but after the first 150 pages the plot dwindles down to something less than expected from the imagination of Mr. Koontz. I was disappointed with the book's last chapters: they seemed like something from another author and lacked substance. I found myself not really caring about the main characters by the end. I'm glad this wasn't my first Koontz, or it may have been my last.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This book's first half will keep you up, the second half may put you to sleep. The ending of the book leaves much to be desired. Good tale. I don't recommend for a first DK book.
Rating: Summary: Yessir, I Like It Review: This is the first Koontz novel I've read, and I definately want to read his others. This story mixes different genres. It's a horror novel, a mystery, a thriller, and a drama. The first half, I thought, was more exciting than the second, but by the end, you realize it's a story about human condition and what it takes to heal old wounds. I didn't think the ending was far out there, like someone on this board said. It makes perfect sense. I'm glad I read this, and I think you will be too.
