Rating: Summary: I don't have the words to describe this... Review: I got this book about five months ago and have read it nine times since then. Pathetic you say? No. Just a huge fan of this compelling story, and author. No other author I have read can give me imagery such as she. If you're looking for a book that will steal every moment of you life until you finish it, and, if you love it as much as me, maybe even longer, than this is the book you need to buy, now.
Rating: Summary: Anne Rice, Move your bum! Review: Dear gods, where to begin? Poppy Z. Brite is not only an exceptionally beautiful woman, but she puts other "Homo-style" authors to shame with the reality of her work.. makes you wonder if she's been in touch with her past male lives... _Drawing Blood_ is a thing of wonder, and it reaches into the hiding parts of your mind and twists them, when necessary. It makes you want to be an artist, a homosexual, and a hermit all at once. This is the kind of writing that scares people, and I guess that's one more reason it draws ME... I find Brite's style so much more refreshing than the poetic-porn droning of Anne Rice, and indeed more vivid than all of the other's descriptions rolled in a ball. This makes my madness happy.
Rating: Summary: Better than her first book, but that's not saying much. Review: DRAWING BLOOD is an easier read than the LOST SOULS, but it's still a very weak novel. I couldn't bring myself to like any of the characters in this novel. I don't mind a whining, self-important wretch as a protagonist. But I can't tolerate an entire book full of them. The plot was also rather weak, but the underground comics angle made for some interesting moments. Still and all, I was sorry I paid good money for this one.
Rating: Summary: A book to write home to Mother about... Review: Truly, this was the best book I've read in a long time. It is the only book I've ever finished, then read again. I especially liked the relationship between two men-- very few authors dare to do this. And the ones that do kind of make it seem like a freak thing-- these characters seem REAL. I hope Poppy Z. Brite keeps up the good work.
Rating: Summary: Definite Must-Read Review: To say Brite has a talent for drawing in a reader is an understatement. There are so many features about this book that normally would have turned me off (wait, there's a compliment in here, honest): I'm not real big on the drug culture, the hacker mentality frankly annoys me, and I'm not always very patient with lush, florid prose like Brite's. Yet I found this book utterly compelling. The characters are richly drawn, and manage to be both thoroughly messed up yet thoroughly likable at the same time (something very few authors seem able to pull off). The "conclusion" (such as it was) was a little confusing, but this fits better with the story overall than a pat ending would have. Definitely worth a read.
Rating: Summary: Complex and just really, really good. Review: I really enjoyed this book. Zach and Trevor were like old friends by the time it ended, incredibly complex and REAL. Brite's work is wonderful, her images visceral. Her stories hit you straight in the gut, and make it seem as if you're really there. I liked this one better than Lost Souls. Read it!
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: My friend let me borrow this book and I loved it! Poppy Z Brite is an excellent writer!!!!!
Rating: Summary: dynamic prose and drawn out dissapointment, again. Review: brite crafts characters with firecracker facades and little more. this novel is spoiled by the intrusion of boring and pointless sex scenes, a weak plot, and a cast of prettyboy airheads that serve as marionettes in brite's self-centered explorations of free gay sex. by the way, what was the whole deal with birdland? is this book supposed to be scary?
Rating: Summary: As good, if not better, than her first book Review: Though I am partial to Poppy Z. Brite, I cannot help but recommend this book to all of my friends, and read it repeatedly myself. She is definatly a wonderful writer.
Rating: Summary: Not bad. Not bad at all.... Review: The first Poppy Z. Brite book I read was Exquisite Corpse, and I loved it. Then I moved on to Drawing Blood, and was kind of dissapointed in the beginning because it was hard to get into the story. But as I read further, I found myself getting more and more interested. I especially liked Zach and Trevor's relationship. You know, for a horror author, Poppy can write some very poignant scenes. (As well as very funny ones). The ending is kind of weak, but overall, Drawing Blood is pretty damn good. -Julia
