Rating: Summary: You gotta try this! Review: I love Drawing Blood. There is never a dull momment. My friend even treats her other book Lost Souls Like her bible. I have already read Drawing Blood five times and it gets even better after I start it over again. If you Like to be scared, this is the book.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Poppy book... Review: I recently re-read this book, and I was amazed all over again at how good it is. Okay, Poppy may very well be the most obsessed writer since David Goodis (I'm not sure she could write a book without going into her manias about "beautiful gay boys in love" and how cool it is to get drunk and smoke pot and overglorification of the whole superficial goth scene), but she writes so incredibly well that it's pretty easy to overlook those things. Poppy's the kind of writer who makes you jealous... if you write, it's inspirational to read her because you continually run across a finely-turned sentence or a certain description that just floors you, and you want to try and top it. And, you usually can't. I'm now re-reading _Lost Souls_ and enjoying it, too, even though I think this book is still the best thing she's written so far. I reccommend all her books, and if you like Poppy, then you're sure to love Caitlin R. Kiernan as well - _Silk_ is incredible. Poppy's not for everyone, I think - it's strong stuff in many ways - but if you can handle it, you'll be well-rewarded.
Rating: Summary: Did I miss something? Review: I can't believe the excellent reviews this book has received from previous readers. I have just finished reading Drawing Blood and the experience has put me off Poppy Z Brite for life. I don't think I will ever try another book of hers. Why? It could be the paper-thin characters who were so hard to give a damn about. Or it could be the uninvolving non-plot that goes nowhere but takes ever such a long time to do so. The initial premise (a young man returning to the house in which the rest of his family were slaughtered twenty years before) is intriguing but all opportunities to flesh it out are squandered. And the desperately "erotic" sex scenes are just tiresome. I found this book languishing at the bottom of the bargain bin in my local store and although I only paid £1 for it, I still feel a little ripped-off.
Rating: Summary: This book marked a positive turning point in my life. Review: If allowed to do so, I would certainly pack a copy of Drawing Blood to accompany me in the ever-after. Ms. Brite describes a story of two young men with perfection. Her characters are very recognizable - people we know, people we are. Brite transforms her readers into residents of Missing Mile. We are all sitting outside the bar, playing poker, using an overturned barrel as a tabletop.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful,Beautiful,Beautiful and oh so sexy... Review: Never before have I read such a wonderful book,I never wanted it to stop, never wanted to put it down. The beauty of the characters and the drama that unfolds is simply put, sensual magic. The love scenes are the best I've ever read before. It's just so beautiful you have to read it for yourself, please do!
Rating: Summary: Brave writing, but the climax was a bit shaky Review: The characters that Poppy provides us with seem to be stupendously intelligent. I mean, expressive artist, computer hacker, wisecracking nightclub owner...what else is there to characterize? Big kudos to the author for her risky, yet successful, sex scenes, especially since the sex is gay. It was amazing to picture in my mind, even though I personally am straight and choose not to practice homosexual sex. However, there is one major problem...the end of the book was quite confusing. I had a hard time following the last few chapters. And all the good horror came in the fifth-to-last chapter. Nevertheless, it was a decently written novel, and Poppy has pretty much established herself in the fiction business.
Rating: Summary: Exotically Cerebral & Dark Review: Drawing Blood is a pun on the theme of the book as well as the relationship between the main character and his father. The bloodlines in this book are very strong - so strong that they manipulate Trevor from the grave. Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: As a lesbian, I was surprised to find the sex scenes between boys to be so beautiful. The sweetness and hunger in it made it universally appealing. Of course, the book is so much more about the connection between these boys than about sex, as well as the ghost story, the fabulous setting, etc., but the other reviewers have already described those better than I could.
Rating: Summary: Lovely Review: I bought this book as I liked her other book, Lost Souls. It's a lot better in many ways, especially if a happy ending is important. Not exactly standard fare. All in all, I would say it's a good psychological horror and a nice love story (don't bother about the sex). Buy it.
Rating: Summary: Ambitious attempt....but failed to deliver Review: The enjoyment factor of this book was quite low for me. I am not quite sure if me failing to enjoy this book was due to the style, the story-line, or just the characters, but something was definitely missing. The novel had a rather sterile feel to it--no beauty and poetry, just "blunt trauma." Such a style can used in an effective way, but in this novel it just "didn't do it." I was truly expecting something more from this book, mostly because of numerous positive comments I have heard in regards to the author's work. Perhaps I should give her another chance and read her newest novel--not even the greatest novelist can produce outstanding works all the time. Or maybe I will just give her another ten years to improve.
