Rating: Summary: A cartoon life Review: This book centers around the two boys whose lives are missing that special something..............trust and love. Trevor McGee lost his family in a brutal murder while still a small child and at the hands of his cartoonist father, he lived through the torments of his mind only to find himself forced to return to Missing Mile. Zach Bosch is a computer nerd with his own disastrous childhood behind him and now he's running from the FBI after being caught out with his hacking exploits. This book is wonderfully rich and varied with each character, no matter how minor their role is, being an individual that seems to live and breathe from the page. Admittedly the first time I read it I was decidely ambivalent towards it but after a break of 18 months I returned to it and this novel is simply amazing. If you've never read any of Poppy Z Brite's work then this is an excellent starting point.
Rating: Summary: Poppy is as beautiful and dark as ever... Review: Mid way into the novel I had automatically thought that she could not live up to the beauty that Lost Souls had been. But what had changed my mind was the relationship between Zach and Trevor, they are the heart of this novel. Their relationship is beautiful in everyway and there is redemption in it as well. Cheers, Poppy!
Rating: Summary: Interesting Characters, but it was a letdown Review: I gave this book 3 stars becuase for the most part I enjoyed the read. I enjoyed the two main characters. There was great character development of the two leads. The relationship of the two leads was well developed, arousing and excisting. Poppy brought it along slowly instead of rushing into things. So there love for each other felt genuine. I enjoyed that half of the book very much. Sadly though the story that surrounds the two lovebirds is very weak in my opinion. This haunted tale was not the least bit spooky. No suspense was created and the ending just seemed silly. Overall I would not recommend this book. If you are looking for a scary book this is definitely not the book for you. I would of preferred to drop the whole haunted house story line all together and just focused on just the romance between the two leads. would of also enjoyed a couple more hot scenes between the two:)
Rating: Summary: Drowning in character development Review: Though the character development is an improvement over Lost Souls, I feel like Brite went into overkill mode on this one. We get to learn every iota of detail about the lives of the two main characters - scratch that, about their personal histories.. for we never really find out what sort of digital crime was committed by Zach, or what Trevor's day to day life was like - that the real plot didn't seem to kick in until I was already half-way through the book. It wasn't as action-packed as Lost Souls, and more 'romantic' than Exquisite Corpse, but it was still worth reading if only to get the cameos in the other novels, read some interesting relationship bonding, learn more about Missing Mile, and celebrate Brite's talent for the spooky and delightfully queer.
Rating: Summary: god Review: this is the best author ypu will ever read. and this is one of her more scairer/psychotic ventures.
Rating: Summary: A little too much... Review: I'll keep this review short... i can't say it was a bad novel, but it just seemed to me as if Brite was trying too hard to be sub/counter-culture... it read more like a young adult, R.L. Stine novel with lots of weed smoke and gay sex...
Rating: Summary: Gothic Romance? Who would've thought... Review: I was only recently introduced to Poppy Z. Brite, by being forced to read Lost Souls. Love at First Bite, is all I have to say. The richness of her imagery is delicious, and I was entranced by the way I could smell and taste with the characters. Drawing Blood was the next logical step in my new obsession, loaned to me by a small, delicate, hard-as-nails Goth. We ooh-ed and aah-ed together, getting all soppy over the exqusite relationships between the characters. It is a love story like no other I have ever had the privelege to read. I would definitely rate this as my favourite novel by Ms. Brite.
Rating: Summary: finneytown english review Review: I really enjoyed how Poppy Z. Brite described how two people fall for each other in vivid details. She even did research on hacking to make her book acurate. She also kept me very interested to the end of the book and that's hard to do. I cannot wait to read Exquisite Corpse.
Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: It's intense, if not so much scary. Brite is amazing with this kind of stuff, relationships. Zack and Trevor's is a homosexual one, but it's so sensually and lovingly portrayed that you almost consider it hetero if indeed you are one anyway (which I am). I guess you're "right there." Immediate creativity...
Rating: Summary: One Hell of a Life Changer Review: I stumbled across this book like some people stumble upon Christ or Buddah. It was there at the right time just when I needed it. The first thing that caught my eye as I scanned the cover was the relationship between Zack and Trevor. Being a closeted and confused 19 year old I knew I could buy it with out looking "gay". When I got it home I started reading it and didnt put it down until I was finished. It felt like Poppy had gotten right inside that corner of my head I thought only I knew about. The feeling of loss, love, madness, disconecction. It wasn't just the gay aspect either. Trevors struggle with his ghost of a father, Zacks inability really to connect with the world except through hacking, Parker, Birdland, comics, it's all here. It's the first book I ever read that made you feel like it came with it's own Jazz soundtrack.(I later read Poppy's Lost Souls..it introduced me to the Cure) It's also the only book I've ever read that takes you into a cartoon underworld. (Litterly!!) When I was done I knew beyond all shadows I would make it..and that their was someone out there waiting and looking for me. Buy this book..give it away as gifts..hell, give it away on the street corner. Magic..pure one hundred perecent hit you in the soul magic.
