Rating: Summary: Temporary Satisfaction Review: Pike's fans will enjoy this book-even though it is only just above mediocre. This novel, which had been postponed for close to seven years, will probably get postponed reactions too. 'That was good!' 'That was so contrived!' But still, the thrill of having a new Pike book will help quench his fans' thirst for more-temporarily! David Lennon has just returned home from two months in New York. A trip that drained him, so what he does not need is to find a body on the beach. Nor does he need to hear that Satanism is involved, or that he is the prime suspect. He begins his own investigation and gets some very strange answers. The only thing David wants to do is finish the cover design for the vampire novel that the publishers claim will be a bestseller. This story-within-the-story works until its abrupt and forced ending. Meanwhile, the main story drags out its ending. Much explanation-not enough action. But the explanation does sort of help readers to understand the lack of emotion in the story. Most of the time, I did not care about anything but the answers. Good answers, but really not developed beyond the outline stage. A good story, but too forced at the end. Better than the last three novels before Pike's four-year hiatus. And the ending ties with 'The Last Vampire 6' for the worst Pike conclusion ever. (Though rumor has it that Pike is planning more books in 'The Last Vampire' series, so he could easily redeem himself there. And actually, 'The Last Vampire 6' had a great epilogue...just was not able to redeem the rest of the book.)The book rates an extra star for the way Pike describes some of the characters' eyes...one character has gray eyes with bits of green...Pike compares them to stones with moss on them.
Rating: Summary: Doesn't feel like Pike Review: Sadly,THE BLIND MIRROR is a terrible book...it's wordy,it's tedious, and the characters all kind of run together and blur. When Pike gets going,he can really write,as evidenced by MONSTER and WHISPER OF DEATH and THE SEASON OF PASSAGE. Pike rarely disappoints me,but THE BLIND MIRROR barely feels like a Pike story.
Rating: Summary: Expect the Unexpected Review: So many twists and turns! The Blind Mirror is a difficult book to put down. After finishing this book I was left wishing that the story could have continued. I am looking forward to Chrisopher Pikes July relase of Alosha.
Rating: Summary: Pages turn themselves! Review: THE BLIND MIRROR is definately worth a read. It starts out a little bit slow, and the beginning is very similar to other Pike books (mainly his teen novels): boyhood friends meet up after so and so time has gone by, followed by a brief walkthrough of their lives together.
But after the slow start, where you're wondering where exactly the story is going; it suddenly gets very, very intriguing and will have you sucked in right up until the end of the book. This books also gave me the creeps. There is a sense of urgency, disorientation, confusion and fear that you can actually catch on to. The dialogue flows naturally, there is a good balance between words and thoughts while two characters are speaking to each other. Enough to stir up the atmosphere.
The author does an excellent job of connecting readers with his characters. This book is a very natural page turner and is a pretty easy read for a horror/ mystery sort of genre.
However, the only dissapointment had to be the ending. It spiraled down breathtakingly fast and had me thouroughly engaged, but it ends with an abrupt stop. It doesn't even provoke any thoughtful discussion on it. And you wonder, was the whole beat around the bush plot really necessary for it to end that way, which seemed inevitable whatever the lead character did about it.
I can't hate the book however disappointing the ending was. I still thought that THE BLIND MIRROR had an amazing way of engaging the reader. You really want to know what's going to happen, what everything is really all about. Pick it up, you'll love reading this book. Just not the ending.
Rating: Summary: Real name of Christopher Pike. Review: The real name of one of my favorite authors is Kevin McFaddon and he must be either burned out or dead.l
Rating: Summary: A Different Style Of Writing, An Excellent Story Review: This book is very different in comparison to previous Pike novels.
The writing is simple, and effective.
The story itself, mysterious and captivating.
Pike has never been the kind of person to tell a story the normal way, his weirdness, his originality is what sets him apart. I appreciate that he grows as a writer, in terms of style and content - and Blind Mirror is a healthy, engaging step further in an author who continues to share with us some of this worlds best fiction. His ability to meld genres with unexpectedly purposeful prose is genius.
Blind Mirror hits you fast and hard at the end, but on rereads is actually highly effective and smart.
Rating: Summary: This was his first Review: This book was his first book ever released in the 1980's. I have been trying to get a hold of it for a long long time to complete my collection. This is not a new release book, but I can't wait nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: A Work of Sheer Brilliance! Review: This is one of Pike's finest books, and I have read them all. The start of the story is classic -- a mysterious woman is found dead, murdered in a ritualistic fashion. The main character, a twenty-eight year old man named David Lennon, is the main suspect, largely because the dead woman might be his girlfriend. But what starts out as a normal mystery quickly takes increasingly brilliant turns. I notice a few reviews here questioning Pike's writing and plotting. Ignore them -- Pike has never been more at top of his game, and a frightening game it is. Indeed, in the years since Pike stopped publishing, he has made huge stylistic leaps. The Blind Mirror contains paragraphs to die for -- on virtually every page. This book kept me up all night, and kept me thnking about it for weeks. I cannot praise it highly enough!
Rating: Summary: Not the best, but Good. Review: While not Christopher Pike's best book, it is still better than most fiction being released these days. The writing is fluid and interresting. Sometimes I would actually take notice of certain stylized sentences and smile. They are modern and interresting. The story is clever and complicated, which is something that always makes for an interresting read.
Rating: Summary: The Blind Mirror Review: Worth the wait! The plot had so many twists and turns that it kept me on my toes right up to the last page. While I don't believe it was his best book ever, it was extremely good, and may be his best *plot* ever. It didn't have as strong of a mood as some of his stuff, but there was enough that I couldn't put it down all weekend! If you are a Pike fan, you gotta get this book. If you have never heard of Pike but like eerie mysteries with a touch of horror/thriller, you have been missing out - you are going to like this guy.
