Rating: Summary: The Trench is kind of like salty pretzels at the bar . . . Review: . . . in that you know you shouldn't be eating so many but gosh, you look up and you've eaten the whole bowl. Can't say it was of Crichton quality or anything but gosh if I didn't read the whole damn thing in one sitting. Loved the way the know-it-all in the first chapter was named after Richard Ellis who gave 'Meg' such a scathing review. Nice poke, Steve...I laughed out loud. Anybody notice any others I missed?
Rating: Summary: OOPS! My rating was supposes to be a 4 not a 1 Review: THE TRENCH, the sequel to MEG, is an entertaining tale of gripping non-stop horror. The story line is fast-paced and exciting, but adds nothing new to the large number of oceanic monster tales since the mid seventies. Jonas is a fascinating character. However, what makes Steve Alten's tale unique is the realization that his monsters contain distinct and intelligent personalities that augment the terror and the understanding by the readers. The Megs also have a natural enemy, kronosaurs, who add to the enjoyment even as they, along with Angel, set the tone for another novel. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Relentless, the book reflects it's lead character. Review: The much anticipated sequel to Meg. Starts in a similar manner to the previous book but now Alten no longer concerns himself with making every detail plausible. This time its much more of a story than hypothetical scenario;- that was dealt with by the last book. This time the plot begins to unwravel with even more sinister undertones and develops into what could almsot be the plot for a James Bond movie, except for the shark. The two main characters, Jonas and Terry, are represented by two very different stories told side by side. Jonas' story is similar to that of the original Meg (or Jaws for that matter) whilst Terry gets drawn into a ever darker conspiracy. The two ideas converge into one of the most dramatic endings I've read. Whilst not yet in the same class as Richard Preston or Michael Crichton, Alten is showing real signs of developing into a future star. A thoroughly good read that just lacks a little polish. And no, don't even think about going in the water.
Rating: Summary: Exciting return of Meg's son with a taste for raw human Review: In the deeper reaches of the Mariana Trench lies the Megalodon shark, a prehistoric creature not found anywhere else in he world. That is until humans interfered and captured an infant Meg. Dubbed Angel by his keepers, the Meg has been imprisoned for the last four years in a Monterey marina where he appears in three shows a day. However, during his captivity, Angel has grown to the point that he easily destroys his steel door barrier and escapes, but not before he has a tasty morsel of humans. Other deaths follow as the intelligent killing machine begins a reign of terror off the California coast. A desperate and frightened world turns to paleobiologist Jonas Taylor who once faced a Meg at high noon and killed the creature, He is also the individual who captured Angel. However, Jonas has doubts that he can confront an even bigger version of his worst nightmare for a second time, but if he cannot, who will? Rating: Summary: A MEG-nificent Sequel! Review: When I heard that Steve Alten was writing a sequel to MEG, my first reaction was "What For?" I mean, I enjoyed MEG, but it was just an updated version of "JAWS". A big killer shark on the loose. How original. (Charles Wilson did a much better job in his book EXTINCT.) I knew how the sequel would read. The baby meg would grow up and escape from captivity and Jonas Taylor would be called out of retirement to capture it....... BOY WAS I EVER WRONG! The Trench is an exciting undersea techno-thriller with non-stop suspense and unexpected surprises! There are two MEGS featured in this book! The 72 foot MEGalodon Shark, and a MEGalomaniacal villain who's just as dangerous. Jonas Taylor reluctantly returns to the Mariana Trench to rescue his wife, but there is something else besides the Megalodons lurking in THE TRENCH! Way to go, Steve! GREAT SEQUEL!
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Read! Review: Wow! What can I say? The sequel to MEG is full of more action, plot twists, and terror! Steve Alten is one of my favorite authors. 'The Trench' is one of the reasons why! Happy swimming!
Rating: Summary: a great book to follow meg Review: He seems to have matured as an author since MEG. This book is a little more involved he makes sure you get to know the characters on a much more personal level. The action is great for all us shark fans, and the story is enough to keep you reading well into the night. A page turner from the start!
Rating: Summary: Jaws Is For Wimps! Review: MEG was incredible, but THE TRENCH takes things up a notch. Most of the previous book's cast (minus the dead guys, of course) return, but bite off what only a Meg can chew when Angel (this book's giant shark) begins terrorizing the oceans. She even goes so far as to attack a pier-side restaurant and some whales! But the Meg isn't the only deep-see killer lurking about: Terry, Jonas Taylor's wife, is trapped at the bottom of the ocean. She only has two things of concern: Madman Benedict Singer and a mysterious pack of underwater carnivores. Of course, Jonas is no better off, since he's stuck with Angel, a conceited former Navy associate, and Benedict Singer's daughter Celeste, who's got a sexual appetite that rivals James Bond! A few twists are thrown in, and the story never loses its winning streak for a moment. I strongly urge readers to pick this up.
Rating: Summary: Too good to be a sequel? Review: This is the first Steve Alten novel I ever read. I was in the airport in Portland, Maine getting ready to come home from a vacation. While browsing through the book store I picked up "The Trench" because the description sounded interesting. Talk about a pleasant surprise! I didn't even realize this was a sequel because so much pertinent detail was given. Of course, I had to find "Meg" as soon as I finished this one and that also was a great read.
I don't read a great deal of novels but this one instantly hooked me on anything by Steve Alten. I have read most of his books multiple times (something I rarely do).
Anything by this author is well researched and certainly exciting. Pick any Alten novel and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Entrenching! Review: Steve Alten writes the kind of books that would make great blockbuster films. Not necessarily Academy Award winning films, but popular, rakin'-in-the-dough films with awesome special effects. The Trench is his sequel to Meg and just as edge-of-your-seat fun. In this story, not only are we again racing along with nervous wreck hero Jonas after another megalodon, but there are even more mega-monsters of the deep along for the ride! There's an evil megalomaniac with ties to terrorism, a bewitching evil beauty, a hapless heroine in peril, a good-buddy sidekick, plenty of twists and turns like a freshly hooked marlin, and just plain good, scary, occasionally blackly humorous fun! A blockbuster of a bestseller! Fast read, hard to put down, with a little bit of science for the slight educational angle. Way to go, Steve!
