Summary: Steve Alten mines deep waters for gold and gets platinum
Review: In his first book, "MEG," Steve Alten took readers on a rollcoaster ride of high adventure by introducing an immense prehistoric shark, the Megalodon, into the 1990's. (The Meg is the great-granddaddy of today's great white shark; the minor difference being somewhere in the range of an additional 30 to 50 feet of shark!) "MEG" was an incredibly creative, fast-moving, energetic book, and one could only imagine the challenge facing Mr. Alten in attempting to at least equal, if not surpass, it.

With "THE TRENCH," Steve Alten delivers a sequel that is just as good as "MEG." In fact, it might be said that "THE TRENCH" is a "leaner, meaner," better novel: the action is more taut, the storyline sleeker. I found the book to be one of those that, well...when I was reading it, I couldn't put it down; when I had to put it down, I couldn't wait to pick it back up.

"THE TRENCH" also delivers stunning imagery, a feast for any reader, an absolute delight for anyone particularly adept at visualizing while reading. I found one scene (in particular) mesmerizing, as "Angel," the 72 foot long Megalodon, slams into the side of the "Lady Rose," a cruise ship.

Mr. Alten's writing skills deserve fair mention too. His characters deliver crisp and realistic dialog, and the pacing of the book is exceptional. One is literally driven to the book's climax by an author who knows when to use the brakes and when to "put the pedal to the metal."

In all, I would have to say that "THE TRENCH" is the most exciting book I have read in years. The only other book in recent memory that delivered the same kind of fun, energy, and enjoyment was, well..."MEG."

Kudos, Mr. Alten! Excellent!

Summary: Not all sequels suck.....
Review: THE TRENCH proves that not all sequels suck. A sequel to MEG (released 2 summers ago), THE TRENCH improves on the original in every way. The story telling is tighter, the main characters get more developed (though Mac needs more story time), and the ending is much more satisfying. Though I thought MEG was entertaining, I did have a few (minor) problems with it. Thankfully this sequel is better in every way. Maybe some day that movie version of MEG will get made just so we can see the finale of THE TRENCH appear on screen.

Summary: A SEQUEL THAT EVEN OUTDOES THE ORIGINAL WHICH I LOVED!!!
Review: I just read TRENCH by STEVE ALTEN and I have to say that this book is even better than MEG which was his first. The story revolves not just around a huge shark. How huge it is and how much havoc it causes I won't say just read and find out you'll be suprised that's for sure. Also jonas and terry run into some pretty mean villians who are out to serve thier own ends what those ends are?and do jonas and terry survive? I won't give away but you'll be suprised for sure!!! Also these MEGLADONS have a new rivial in the marinas trench, what they are and how big! they are I won't say but be prepared to jump out of your seat. All in all if you loved MEG by STEVE ALTEN you'll love THE TRENCH I know I did.

Summary: Excellent tale of man, beast, and evil Russian-types!
Review: Since MEG had come out, I've been waiting for a sequel. A few years later and here is the eagerly anticipated tale of a new megalodon wrecking havoc upon the open sea. While the Trench holds it own with the best of thrillers, the only problem I had was the sub-plot involving Benedict Singer. I know Steve is going to kill me for saying this, but maybe the that whole area of the story could've been reduced? Oh, well, I just love seeing a shark run around and kill people. What do I know? :)

Summary: More exciting than MEG
Review: A real page-turner.The description of the characters as they progress through the story will keep you glued to the book right up to and including the "crashing,nerve-racking" ending. Can't wait for the next one.

Summary: Akin to a midnight swim off Dangerous Reef
Review: Imagine, while you're kayaking into a wide expanse of sea, you catch a glimpse of an enormous shark swimming directly underneath you. Sound scary? Then either go kayaking in the Blood Triangle (to really experience the panic) or read this book. Better yet, read the book WHILE you're kayaking.

Summary: Perfect Summer reading...Could not put it down!
Review: I picked up a copy of "Meg" back in '97, and even though it was not the best book I've read, it was still a very fun read.

My partner, David and I had planned a trip down under to view great white sharks thru one of those underwater steel cages. Needless to say, we canceled the trip. We kept picturing ourselves in said steel cage waiting for a visit from a large 20' great white, but instead of a great white we notice one of these megs coming at us from the deep blue sea....Yikes!

I just finished reading Steve Alten's sequel, "The Trench", and I was totally blown away! Vastly superior to his first book, "The Trench" shows that the writer has done his home-work and has thus won a place on my "favorite" list of authors, which includes another sea-fairing writer, Peter Benchley.

I found this book to be highly entertaining and hard as hell to put down. I read it in two days, but only because I did not want it to end so soon. The descriptions in this book were so vivid that I'd swear I could smell the ocean and that there was sand in my hair.

The villians (and I'm not refering to the shark) are nasty as hell and you just can't wait for them to "get theirs."

I'll end this with a favorite saying from one of the characters of The Simpsons animated series who I'd would swear could be the main villian's brother...

"EXCELLENT".....

Summary: Gripping. It kept me on the edge of my seat!
Review: Really enjoyed this book. I could not set it down once I started reading it. It was better than MEG. The shark was devestating. I real tongue biter.

Summary: Last gasp from a would-be writer
Review: Basically a slightly more polished version of the dreadful Meg. If English is your 3rd or 4th language and you have little grasp of it, or you are a comic book reader, or pro wrestling fan you'll love this. After Doubleday took a big loss on Meg they dumped this turkey of a sequel. But without all the hype and promotion of a major publishing house it will be interesting to see if this is Alten's last gasp. Probably, time to pick up the basketball pal.
