Rating: Summary: 4 1/2 stars??! You're all nuts Review: I couldn't even finish this poor sequel to "Meg". I got turned on to Steve Alten when I read the fantastic "Domain", and proceeded to read "Meg". Well, "Meg" was enjoyable (3 stars) yet extremely silly. I was able to swallow alot of nonsense due to the neat ideas and fast pace which Alten delivered during it's pages. THIS novel, however, is pointless. Sure, the pacing is quick but it costs the reader a coherent STORY. I felt like I was reading the screenplay for a bad direct-to-video movie. I can't begin to describe how weak the storytelling is here. I don't like to use the word "hack" when it comes to describing writers, but with this sorry novel Alten almost earns that crown. Honestly, if it hadn't been for his stellar performance on "Domain" I would never consider reading another Steve Alten novel.
Rating: Summary: GREAT THRILLER! Review: Good storyline, lot's of action and carnage!
Rating: Summary: Great thriller, but has its faults Review: "The Trench", the sequel to Steve Alten's bestselling "Meg", is a great thriller and every bit as good as the first novel in the series. The book starts about four years after the conclusion of the first book with the main characters (Jonas, Terry, Mac, etc.) on board. While the book has an exciting beginning, the middle of the book (the big chase) tends to drag in parts and keeps the book from being an excellent novel worthy of a five star rating. The book opens with the Megalogon named Angel in captivity and being viewed by the public in a Sea World type atmosphere. The corporation responsible for maintaining Angel is making money hand over fist; however, Jonas (that name has to be a reference to the story of Jonah and the great whale) thinks that Angel is becoming too agitated and could escape. Eventually his fears come true when some teens break into a secure area, tease the shark and cause her to break free of her surroundings. At this point, Jonas and friends/enemies begin a long trek to retrieve the shark. His wife is back at the Marianas Trench where the megalodons were discovered. There is a secret the trench hides and his wife is caught in the middle. The chase and unraveling of the mystery could have been condensed. An action-packed ending occurs at the Trench with all parties involved. The ending is not a surprise, but is still well-written and entertaining. Of course, the book is left open for another sequel which will be released in 2003 entitled "Primal Waters". This will supposedly be the end of the planned trilogy.
Rating: Summary: A great sequel! Review: I have rarely found a sequel that surpasses the original. This is definately one of them. As good as "meg" is, this book is even better. Instead of mainly focusing on the shark, this book has several plotlines and focuses a lot more on the people in the story, with a back story that is just as suspenseful (if not more) than the shark's. And the best part about it all, is that this book introduces a creature even mroe frightening than the Meg!
Rating: Summary: Steve's next best Review: Angel is back but there is more to the story then just that. I was excited to read this book by Steve and was happy with the results. I recommend this to any fan of Steve's or "Jaws" type fan.
Rating: Summary: Don't think! Just read....... Review: The Trench is the literary equivalent of a Cheeseburger and Fries; You know it's not good for you, but you can't help enjoying it. I thought Meg, Steve Alten's first Megalodon novel, was pure trash. Totally forgettable, badly written, cliche-ridden, and it also had the MOST ridiculous ending of any story I've ever read. I bought The Trench because I'm Shark-obsessed, not because I was expecting War and Peace.... Well, I'm happy to say that Alten's writing HAS improved somewhat. The portions of the story concerning Angel (The 72-foot offspring of the Meg from the novel of the same name) zip along briskly. Jonas Taylor is back in his Ahab role, hunting the Megalodon across the Seas, and Alten throws in a few other large Sea-Beasties, making some of The Trench a Godzilla-esque "Monster Vs. Monster" romp. Not so successful is the subplot about the Russian loon trying to crack the secret of Fission for Osama Bin Laden (!)....Those portions of the story become bogged down in inexplicable psuedo-science, and I just found myself getting listless, waiting for Angel to reappear. Overall, The Trench is a fun read, but leave your brain at the door....
Rating: Summary: incredible Review: I've read this book more times that I can count and it hasn't once gotten boring. This sequel to "Meg" (just as great as this) depicts a shocking scenario where the gargantuan prehistoric shark "Angel" escapes her surrounding cell leaving only Jonas Taylor able to catch her. While at the same time an eccentric madman is using Angel's original home as a front for a secret operation. There's much more to this book, but you'll have to read it to find out. There is also a petition in motion to make "Meg" a movie. Go to ... and sign it. It would be a smart move considering that this is a predator that could tear "Jaws" in half like a piece of paper.
Rating: Summary: Unpublished in Britain!!! Review: Why has this book been withdrawn from publishment in the UK? I read Meg and loved it (5 stars by the way), and wanted to continue the saga. I was so dissapointed when I was told I'd have to fork out ~£20 for a copy from the States.
Rating: Summary: Better than Meg, if that's possible!! Review: If you liked Alton's MEG you'll LOVE The Trench! I thought this was a very inventive way to carry on the riviting story of Angel! It has even scarier and deeper plot twists! When you pick up The Trench, don't be expecting to read just another "shark book" there is so much more happening in this book than the last. There are villians much more dangerous than the MEG and a little something else hiding in the depths waiting to attack the reader. I think that this book is definatly worth the read for anyone that liked Meg, but, I would advise you read Meg first, or you will miss a little of the plot.
Rating: Summary: The best book since JAWS Review: the Trench was the first Alten book I read not knowing that Meg was first in a way I think it's better that way because then everything made sense and not to be funny but when I read this book before going to bed I slept 10 times better at night but about the website where they tour the real Tanaka Institute the pictures are awesome and scary but something isnt right since they are talking about a movie this "tour" could be part of the movie if it is I can't wait to see it I'll be first in line for it I give the book 100 stars and I can't wait for the next one to come out
