Rating: Summary: Simply The Most Beautiful Book I've Ever Read Review: This is the first Brite book I ever read--a friend gave me a copy. It turned out to be the most beautifully written thing I had ever read; even now, the only works that compete are other works by Brite herself. The story is touching, the characters are very well developed, and the plot is well constructed. This is also a beautiful addition to the Vampire legend. This is a must read for (non-homophobic) horror and/or vampire fans. Avoid it, however, if you are liberal with what you dub "pretentious." This is not for those who cannot feel or accept the artistic statement of feelings and emotion.
Rating: Summary: Hopefully the paper can be recycled Review: I try to keep an open mind and read all sorts of books and watch all sorts of films. Also, as I am a vampire fan I had hopes for this book. It turned out to be the first time i actually threw a book into the garbage (I did manage to controll myself enough to put in the correct bin).To put my finger on exactly what I hated is more difficult though. The feeling I got as I read the book is that the author wants to focus on the relations betwen the carracters, about lonly people (and vampires) looking for someone or simply anyone with whom they can feel safe and loved. This is hardly a new theme (but then what theme is) but usually worth telling. The problem is that today boy meets girl or in this case boy (both on the platonic and not so platonic level) is hardly shockning anymore. The author then tries to "spice up" the story using graphic language and descriptions to shock the readers into interrest. I admit that it is good to be shocked now and then but it should be for a reason and with other purpose then to create attention for the book. If you compare it to Bret Easton Ellis work you can clearly see the differce. Both books use extremes to shock the reader, but in "American Psycho" it is integrated in, and an essensial part of, the story. In "Lost Souls" most of it could have been cut out in favor of more intersting parts. An other comparison can be made with Ann Rice who also uses vampires to talk about not so accepted relations, however she does it with great skill, only overdoing it in her later books. There are lots of people who seems to thinks this is a great book, but I think this is a book I would only recomend someone interested in the extremes of literature (or somebody I realy dislike).
Rating: Summary: yummy.... and all of the above Review: i absolutely adored this book. from the first page to the last.. the blood.. the sex.. .the dysfunctionalism... Rating: Summary: An overall good read Review: Most reviews seem to be rather mixed on this novel, personally I really enjoyed it. The books story itself had weak moments(the twins) but at the same time the realationship between Ghost and Steve was one of the closest(and yes hetero) I have ever read about. Zillah and his crew were weak characters but Nothing really was an intruiging and well written character. One problem I had was that Nothing did not have as much time to "bond" with Ghost. This is a great rainy-afternoon-read, I also think that at would translate into a very interesting film.
Rating: Summary: This book deserves only good words. Review: Lost Souls is darkly enchanting from the first page to the last. Every character has an individual beauty and charisma which pulls you in to the story further than you'd like to admit, especially the God-like Ghost.Basically, it is a story of vampires, but to me it was much more than that. It is a segment of horror which intrigues rather than repulses the senses and makes you wonder where the line between right and wrong is really drawn in life.
Rating: Summary: ::Lost Souls:: Review: Lost Souls, is an astonishing horror novel written in 1992 by the talented young author Poppy Z. Brite. The book is about four people or groups of people who are all connected to each other in some way, but don't realize it. The main character out of all, is a 15 year old boy whose name is Nothing. Nothing is determined to leave his home in search for his real mother and his real family. Or at least just leave the home he lives in now, and find a fitting place to live. Ghost and Steve, two of the other main characters, are intelligent guys around the ages of 19 and 21. Together they have a band, Lost Souls, which is growing popularity around Missing Mile, North Carolina, where they live. "Lost Souls" is more than just a name for their band, it's a description for the both of them. Confused, lost, and drunk is how they live their lives most of the time. Molochai, Zillah, and Twig are the third group in this story. They are three immature vampires out for just a good time. Human morals don't exist, and they indulge themselves in their desired passion: killing people, depriving them of all their sweet blood and leaving their lifeless bodies to rot. Christian is the last main character. He, just like Zillah, Molochai, and Twig, is a vampire. The oldest one, and the most mature. He owns a bar in The French Quarter in New Orleans. In his bar is where he met Zillah, Molochai, and Twig for the first time. Since then, Christian has been determined to find them again. In the end, Nothing finds out the grotesque truth of his father and himself. Poppy's unique style of writing, makes this book all the more interesting. Mental pictures of pale faces painted with thick black eyeliner, dark hair and skinny bodies, creates a world of dreary loneliness and wanting. Along with the drugs, lust, blood, and anguish. She adds twists to every chapter to lure the you into reading more. Lost Souls is an excellent book, definitely worth reading.
Rating: Summary: It was great but... um... Review: I really, really loved this book. I honestly fell in love with all of the vampires, but other than them, the book was pretty damn bland. The WORST parts of the book were when Brite started getting into unneccessary details of the lives of characters that were unimportant to the story. Who cares about Arkady and the twins and the dreams that Ghost had, blah blah blah. I honestly have to say that after I cried in the end, I realized that there was nothing much to cry for. The ending was rather... eh... because of all the nonsense Brite brought into the plot. Its sad to say, but I had to skip more than numerous pages of USELESS JUNK before getting to the good part... which wasn't even so great. I HATE THE ENDING!
Rating: Summary: I Really Tried to Like It....... Review: For the real effort I made to enjoy this novel, I will give it 3 stars rather than the 2 that it deserves. (Let's call it a 2.5) The descriptions of the edges of the French Quarter, New Orleans were actually quite good - and the writing flowed quite nicely. However, the dialogue was little more than adolescent smack - and the plot's substance left much to be desired. There were blatant shortcomings in both suspense and horror. It is ironic that, given this novel's premise, I had originally anticipated devouring all of Ms. Brite's work. Unfortunately, since reading "Lost Souls," I have had not so much as an inkling of desire to even taste another of her books.
Rating: Summary: This is the most beautifully written book ever Review: Poppy Z. Brite is the best author out there. This is the greatest book. You fall in love with the characters. It's hypnotyzing. When I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I love Poppy Z. Brite's work. You're always in for a real surprise.
