Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST BOOK EVER! Review: A friend of mine gave me this book about seven years ago when I was in high school. I have since read it countless times and it gets better each time. It became part of my life. I have adopted the name of Ghost as a nickname among friends. Lost Souls? is written on almost everything I own. I have tried Chartreuse, clove cigarettes, and I got heavily into the Goth scene. Read it, Lost Souls will change your life. Let the night come, we are not afraid
Rating: Summary: Addicting Review: Lost Souls is the best book I have ever read... When I read Courtney Love: The Real Story, I really liked how she wrote and I had never read one of her books before. So I went and bought Lost Souls and I absolutely could not believe how good it was. I could not put it down at all. I didnt want it to end. You really become attached to the characters. I fell in love with Ghost and Nothing. As soon as I finished it I had to go buy another of her books because I became instantly addicted to her writing. Im now reading Drawing Blood which is really good too, but I dont think an book could live up to Lost Souls. I've let 2 of my friends read it and they both said it was the best book theyve ever read too.
Rating: Summary: Deeply Disturbing Review: If you hate Ann Rice you will love Poppy. If you love Ann Rice, Poppy will astound you. I have been changed by this book. Not necessarily for the better. Her prose is beautiful, and her characters engrosing. By the end of the book they are your friends, and youre not sure if you hate them.
Rating: Summary: lost souls Review: lost souls is one of the most erotic, sensual, emotional and REAL works i have ever read. this is one of those stories you pick up and don't want to put down. brite's description of the characters is so true-to-life it is almost haunting. the lust, desire and sexuality of the book is enough to make anyone sweat, yet the way she portrays the characters is not at all dirty, scary or unbelievable. the essence of each character is revealed, yet each time i read the book a new facet of each personality arises. this was my first book related to vampire genre, and still definitely my number one choice. unlike anything i have ever read, you get into the characters so much that you "know" they are real, whatever names, places, or stories brite uses. i will read this work again and again, and my psyche has been forever changed regarding the race of vampires from this book, and no one will be able to convince my soul otherwise.
Rating: Summary: The Best book I have read in years Review: I could not put it down, Ms. Brite has outdone herself with this book. I got it from the library, and now I am going to purchase it. I loved it so much. I urge you to read this book, you will feel like you become part of the book.
Rating: Summary: It's still in my mind a year later! Review: I read this book when I was in Bosnia, never before has a book affected me so much. I let a friend borrow it then never got it back. It has been with me ever since, it is beautiful and haunting with its cruelty and harsh reality. But it is reality and you can't help but to love the chracters and want to be with them. This book speaks of the allure and unknown dangers that are inside of us all. Beautiful, there is no other word for it.
Rating: Summary: Brite star in the world of vampire lore Review: Of all the vampire books I have ever read, Lost Souls is among the finer gems. The characters are brought to life by vivid descriptions in modern jargon, and the turn of events is extremely plausible (minus perhaps the vampirism). I was impressed by how quickly the books reads. Its simplicity is one of its finer points...and is perhaps what seduces the reader into wanting to learn more about Nothing, the half-human, half-vampire in search of his past--and future. All of the characters are extremely memorable, making this a book you'll want to sit of the shelves. The rock band, Steve and Ghost, exemplify a lot of the traits that make us human. Ghost, the seer, has an implicit understanding of nature--both human and unhuman--that is uncanny. Compared to the esteemed Anne Rice, this book will give you a different flavor to the lives of vampires and their world view. In many ways, the authors are not comparable because of Brite's focus on comtemporary times. She depicts vampires not as gods, but as a separate race without Rice's romanticism and eroticism. This does not in any way detract from Lost Souls. It puts Brite in a category of her own. This book is a definite must for anyone interested in vampire lore. I look forward to reading other books of Brite and encourage anyone to use this book as a spring-board into her novels.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful novel Review: Lost Souls is not only the best vampire book I've ever read, (sorry Anne Rice, but yours just can't cut it anymore) it is the most beautiful and haunting novel I've ever come across. I feel particualrly drawn to the character of Nothing, the vampire child fathered by the mad Zillah. I identify with Nothing's cold world, and his desire to find acceptance. He finds it with a group of punk subculture vampires, Zillah, Molochai, Twig, and the enigmatic Christian. Along the way we meet Steve and the psychic Ghost, who follows these lost souls to their destinies. I am almost finished reading this book, and will immediately go on to Poppy Z. Brite's other works. "Lost Souls" captures the underground world of the punk vampire. Lonely, loving, and constantly dangerous. Reading this book is like being drunk on a good bottle of whiskey tinged with blood, until you realize its only Poppy's beautiful words that haunt you. You won't be able to put this down. I know I can't!
Rating: Summary: Chilling, dark, beautiful Review: This is a dark vampire story that is rendered beautifully by Ms Brite's wonderful descriptions. The story is sad, erotic and chilling, but even if you are not too interested in vampires or anything of the kind, make sure you read for the author's magical sensibility towards language. This is a book that makes you want to be a writer.
Rating: Summary: THE Definitive Neo-Gothic Vampire Tale Review: But so much more than just a vampire story ! I laughed, I cried, I fell deeply in love with every turn of the page. Poppy Z. Brite makes Ann Rice's books read like the back of a cereal box. Lost Souls was my first encounter with Ms. Brite, and by the end I felt like I had lived the lives of all her characters. Ms. Brite has a descriptive turn and a poetry in her prose that makes me look forward to reading more of her writing. If you enjoy Tanith Lee, Clive Barker, Edgar Allan Poe or H.P. Lovecraft, Poppy Z. Brite is right up your dark & ominous alley. Be sure to check out "Wormwood"- her collection of short stories, as well.
