Rating: Summary: HUGE Dissapointment Review: WHAT A STEAMING PILE OF CRAP! I can't be more dissapointed in this book. After the hype about Ms. Brite and her work, I eagerly ran out and bought "Lost Souls" expecting a lush new vampire epic. Instead, I find "The Lost Boys on Acid go Gay porno!" Seriously, one 15 year old character over the course of two days has homosexual sex, group sex, prostitutes himself, shoots heroin, smokes opium and tops it off by having sex with his father! Add to this moronic story Ms. Brites over-the-top descriptive style in which she hits you with every taste,color,texture,temperature.....etc. over and over and you get a very unsatisfying, amaturish"book". The only horror I experienced was when I remembered that I paid 5.99 for this piece of junk. AHHHHH! I really hope Ms. Brite uses the proceeds from her work for some writing lessons and psychiatric help. Perhaps she is better suited to return to her previous career as an "exotic" dancer. Much like the boy said to the Emperor;"I can,t see your new clothes Ms. Brite!"
Rating: Summary: what? Review: I was alarmed to see how many people gave this book a 10. Poppy Z Brite is a good writer and I've found her books highly entertaining, but Lost Souls was lacking in many areas. I thought the story itself was well planned and at times her writing was exquisite, but then there were the stale, "can we get any more desperate to thrill" sections that I could barely stand to read. Every character seemed to have some sort of tragic past giving them a supreme power...ghost is psychic, ann is arty, nothing is a vampire, christain is old and sad...it just reads like pulp that an imaginative eigth grader would write. Even the secondary pointless characters like the crazy evangelist that likes to be sucked by little boys. Are there any relatively believable characters? well there is steve...I think I found myself connecting to him the best considering he was the most real, untortured alcoholic. For lack of another word, I also found the dialog rather "stupid" but I suppose that also stays with the theme. In all , its like reading one of those cheezy Fox vampire specials and if you want a Brite book there are many that are far superior.
Rating: Summary: Lost Souls is one of the century's most amazing books. Review: "Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite is unprecendented in the world of vampire/gothic fiction. Poppy uses her exemplary literary talents to entrance each and every reader. She is, in my opinion, the most unique and influential writer of the nineties. In "Lost Souls", Brite takes you on a journey like no other, through the eyes of many different characters. The setting of a large amount of the book, New Orleans, appropriately serves such a dark novel. The imagery and language used is ideal for any reader. Poppy encompasses all the emotions of her characters, making each of them seem like a part of your own reality. With her understanding of the human psyche, and her knowledge of paranormal phenomena, "Lost Souls" is sure to delight and entrance anyone who decides to read it. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys horror fiction, gothic culture, or erotica. "Lost Souls" is my absolute favorite book, and I anxiously await an opportunity to experience more of the realm of Poppy Z. Brite.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Amazing but....not for everyone Review: Well, my friend first turned me on to Poppy and her world. I read some short stories by her and fell in love. This book is my absolute favorite book, but it's not for everyone. You should be mature enough to deal with the subject matter which includes sex, drugs, violence, the occult, homosexuality, and gore...so I wouldn't advise a kid to read it. It also can get a little confusing ---- too many charachters, so I advise reading it twice through before forming an opinion. But, all in all, its GREAT!!!
Rating: Summary: poetry Review: every line is poetry. Poppy Brites books are amazing. I adore her work, and this book is no exception.... END
Rating: Summary: Quoth the raven... Review: Intriguing story, gritty realism, delicious characters. How can one so young write so damned well? My intuition tells me that Poppy Z is herself a lost soul, an androgynous vampire who has been absorbing her characters for centuries. Maybe she has even shocked us with her writing in past lives. Could it be that Edgar Allen Poe is not really dead! (That's my theory and I'm sticking to it!)
Rating: Summary: its cosmic and you know it Review: i would first like to state one simple thing..most people who dont like this book dont give an email adress. Well, with that over with....Lost Souls is the most beautifull book!! the charectors deal with the emotions that everyone feels. this book is so wounderfully writen and touches your dreams and fears. When i read it the first time i cried when i finished. I never thaught a book could make me feel this way and because of it, i have started reading more searching for the things that Poppy has given all of us, but i usualy come back to her like a warm blanket.
Rating: Summary: an achingly beautiful book that everyone should read Review: Poppy Z. Brite is truly one of the greatest writers that has ever been. "Lost Souls?" takes the reader to a whole other realm of the soul. With the help of breathtakingly exquisite characters Nothing and Ghost, your whole outlook on life will be altered. I was actually very sad when this book ended. I took it to school every day, and stayed up till 1:00 am every night/day to read it. It affected me deeply and profoundly, and there are really no words strong enough to describe how much I loved it, and how much I wanted it to be true...
Rating: Summary: Freaking fantastic!! Review: I have a wild immagination and each characters in the book makes me go wild as I read on, especially from passionate love making to blood sucking moment always make me think that I'm one of them! This is one of Poppy's writing that keeps me awake all night long.
Rating: Summary: This definately must be read Review: When I first heard about this book, I wasn't too sure about it. Then when I finally picked it up and opened it, I didn't really put it down until I was done. The ways in which Ms. Brite draws the reader into her realms is astounding. I for one have worked in many of the types of environments which she describes through her works. Her attention focuses more on the emotions of the place, not the actual details (though she doesn't skimp on those) thus making the events very impacting upon the reader. She has managed to become gorier through the years (I just finished her Crow book today, all I can say is Whoa!!!) though that hasn't prevented me from enjoying again the ways in which she sets her moods. Once again, Lost Souls? a definate pickup!
