Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK Ranks with king barker and the rest Review: This book is a well crafted tale which ranks with the best of Stephen King and Clive Barker. It is a wonderful story which feels like an epic at time. Every character is striking, the plot is compelling, and like a good super natural science fiction epic, it makes you feel a little small.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book, do not trust his author he WILL surprise you Review: Dan Simmons has become my favorite author in suspense and SF, throw in horror, oh and history too. Mr. Simmons gives his characters much depth without excess verbage, characters who you remember forever. I am amazed that he has not become more popular. I honestly can not recommend him enough, just be careful, he is an author without fear one who is going to twist you in knots.
Rating: Summary: Great first-time experience! Review: Aside from Dean Koontz, I think that Stephen King may be forced to abdicate his throne to the likes of Dan Simmons. I have read "Carrion Comfort" due to an indication of a friend of mine, and I was amazed. Not only by its bulkiness, but also by the fact that in it being so big, 900 pages, give or take, it was not boring, in the least. A new frontier has been forged in the fields of horror. It's name is Dan Simmons.
Rating: Summary: This is one of my favorite books Review: I loved this book. I had read other Simmons and enjoyed it, but this book blew me away. never have I read a book where the actions of the characters provoked such emotional response in me. And I am not alone, I suggested this book to many friends, all of whom also enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: Totally not what I expected! Review: It is so badly written...I do not find it entertaining and I surely think that this is his worst book. I do hope he'll improve.
Rating: Summary: horribly over-written Review: I approached Carrion Comfort with great anticipation, and it wasn't until several hundred pages later that I gave up on it. Simmons is obviously a talented writer, but apparently no editor ever went near this horribly over-written book. Every action, whether crucial or trivial, is described in microscopic detail, so that a man opening a window and climbing inside takes up almost a whole page. A character makes breakfast, and we're treated to every stroke of the whisk as he scrambles the eggs. Over breakfast, another character tells him the complete, unabridged story of her life (as people so often to do total strangers they've just met), filling up several pages with inessential details. One effect of this, to me at least, is that there's no suspense, even in the most crucial moments, since there's no greater narrative weight to these moments than there is to anything else that happens. Another is that the story seemed to proceed in slow-motion. Ultimately, I was unable to stay awake while plowing through endless descriptions, trying to get to the story.
Rating: Summary: Dan Simmons is one of the best. Review: That a man can be at the top of a writing genre is impressive, that he can be at the top of two (SF and horror) is superlative. With this book Dan puts himself in rare company. Ellisons' guidance really shows in this book. Topnotch!
Rating: Summary: The best sci-fi I have read. Review: If anyone can suggest a novel I'd enjoy as much as Hyperion, please, please email me! Although there were sequels (each progressively inferior), this stands alone fine on its own. A group of pilgrims travel to a planet called Hyperion, each telling their story of what brings them there. Their only hope is the Shrike, an enigmatic being of twisted razors, who will either grant their request, or....well, read it! If the priest's tale doesn't hook you, nothing will.
Rating: Summary: To paraphrase Abbie Hoffman: "READ THIS BOOK" Review: For years I have told people to read this book and have offered to reimburse them for the purchase price if they didn't absolutely love it; my wallet remains full. This book is Simmon's at his (and perhaps, everyone's) absolute best. The large scale scenes are so visual that you get the idea you're watching 70mm with surround sound, and yet the internal turmoil and evil of the characters is what is ultimately so terrifying. There are certain books that define authors: McCammon's "Boy's Life", Straub's "Ghost Story" and King's "The Shining". This is Dan Simmon's contribution to that list, and it may be the best of all!
Rating: Summary: An outstanding epic of terror! Review: With Carrion Comfort, Dan Simmons has proven himself to be one of the most versatile masters of
story-telling. Exquisite writing, engaging characters
and enough plot twists to keep you on the edge
throughout this horrorfying struggle for power
