Summary: A Thought provoking Read
Review: The Tommyknockers is a novel somewhat reminicent of Needful Things. Both involve the corruption of small towns at the hands of discoveries too good to be true. In this novel King looks at the progression of an entire town as they are affected by an alien space ship. The changes they under go as they "become" removes many elements of their humanity leaving technilogically advanced beings that are not actually surperior intellectually. This book is a complex story that covers many issues: drug and alcohol abuse, and the consequences of scientific advancement for example. Once again King has given us a flawed hero. Gardener's flaws make him more realistic thus making his accomplishments all the more astounding. This novel is quite gripping and leaves its mark. It is difficult to shake the story when you are finished. It stays with you and leaves you pensive. One warning: this book did leave me somewhat apprehensive and nervous alone in the dark at bed time when I was in the midst of the climactic ending. An excellent read.

Summary: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - and Saved the World!
Review: Bobbi Andersen stumbles on a buried piece of metal in the woods near her home in Haven, Maine, and does what any curious, red-blooded American woman would do - starts digging it out. Her old flame Gard, a burned-out alcoholic poet drowning his memories of accidentally shooting his wife, shows up in town about the same time, but fails to share Bobbi's enthusiasm in digging out whatever bizarre relic is down under all that dirt. Whatever it is, it makes the metal plate in his head hurt.

Bobbi isn't alone in her new pet project, however. Several of the local townsfolk begin sharing new psychic powers and expanded creativity with her, as a result of the buried object's emanations. It doesn't take them long to realize what Bobbi has found is a millennia-old crashed flying saucer, which piques their interest all the more.

Problem is, the thing's existence is sharply dividing the town. The gifted few begin physically as well as psychically mutating, and after a while begin looking on the unaffected as backward country yokels. Oh, well - maybe they could still serve in some way...as slave-labor, or even human battery cells, maybe.

In the end, as Haven becomes an insulated, alien-infested battle zone, it falls on one immune alcoholic burnout to find a way to save the world...

This is King at his best. It took him five years to write this epic, and the time and care show. He develops a great number of characters very fully, and manages to make even the progressively more heinous ones sympathetic, which adds to the fascination of the plot. The novel is better structured than most of King's works, with a more even dramatic flow leading to a satisfying payoff. And, for once, he doesn't belabor the epilogue - it plays no longer or shorter than it should. The suspense is steady and gripping, the dramatic revelations spaced properly for full shocking impact.

What works best in this book is King's counterpointing of Gard's alcoholism with the "drug" of the alien influence spreading across Haven. Bobbi's gradual disintegration is both terrifying and sadly pathetic, and Gard's equivalent struggle toward salvation - not only his own, but Bobbi's and the world's as well - is the more heroic, by contrast.

A definite must for King fans, or sci-fi/horror fans in general. Those who love a great sweeping, epic melodrama will enjoy it, as well. The miniseries, though different in some regards, is also quite good.

Summary: Please don't fill me in if I missed something here.
Review: Some lady spends lots of time digging in the dirt. Oh yeah, and a drunk guy hitch hikes with a punk rock band and smokes pot.

That's all I can remember. Please don't fill me in if I missed something here.

Summary: The Tommyknockers-Stephen King
Review: While its not one of my favorites, The Tommyknockers is worthy reading. Nicknamed "The gadget novel", this book is rather long and not near as compelling as other lengthy King novels The Stand and IT. Still its an overall good book, with the usual interesting characters and their own share of problems prior to the crashed spaceship. The power given to the characters and their everyday appliances is totally original and makes it the one high tech King thrill ride. If youre looking for evil space creatures, dont go looking in Dreamcatcher, in my opinion King's failed attempt at ET's. Theyre all here and a note to King: one alien book is enough. This book is pretty much the epitamy of all things futuristic and dark in the area of aliens and theres no need to write a new one. Although not essential, its an excellent read for hardcore and casual fans.

Summary: Wonderfully strange story!
Review: The Tommyknockers is a twisted and mysterious work by Mr. King.
I enjoyed this book to the fullest! In fact, I did my Sr. Thesis about it.(years ago) I would highly recommend this novel.
The main character finds herself "searching" for the source that is driving her to the point of insanity. Her unsuspecting boyfriend is the only one who is not "controlled" by the Tommyknockers. He starts to notice some strange happenings among the townspeople and his girlfriend. He finds himself literally stuck in this town with no way out.
The Tommyknockers have a way of putting people in a trance to do the work they need done. Their ultimate goal is for control.
They don't tolerate defiance.
I encourage you to read this stimulating break from reality!

Summary: King does it again
Review: Dear Reader,

Brace yourself in for this one. I did! This is truly a love story although it's diguised as science-fiction/ahem, horror. Don't be thrown off track by the techno-jumble, because the charactors really do shine at times at a human and romantic level. I think this novel is King's testiment that true love remains endurant even through the most "alien" intrusion even though the outcome may not be what we expect it to be. I really felt for both main charactors deeply. I thought they were heroic and tenacious. And, although Bobbi does "change," her wonderful human self is always recognized by "Gard ole Gard." Sweet Gard, indeed! Bobbi is the the heartbreaker though. She cannot break the "alien" grip taken hold over her and makes gross moral infractions while in this grip, yet we love her somehow along with Gard. King weaves more emotional enigma into the two main charactors as the story unfolds. On a nuts and bolt level, the story is long, but to my pleasure necessarily so. I've read a few of King's other novels, and find this to be on par with some of his best. I can almost stew in the details that he embellishes his novels with. They really make 'em sparkle. Upon describing his scenes, King engages my imagination to hyper-drive automatically. I'm seeing pictures that he lays out vividly and even can bring in smells and texture. Of course, this can work against the dear reader upon more frightening scenes. But, I take King with a grain of salt, which maybe he would say I shouldn't? The charactors are of the "aw-shucks" variety found in many a small town( or use to be found) and are given appropriate depth(don't overshadow the leading charactors.) So whether you are a King horror fan, want to read a decidedly different "love story" or just like plain ole science-fiction, pick this one up. solo.

Summary: One of King's Best
Review: In Tommyknockers King has brought two old friends together at a time when they can truly love one another. But as they begin to fall in love Bobby is getting drawn deeper into obsession with a miraculous find.

Soon the entire town is drawn into the obsession, building contraptions that work by unknown means and using normal batteries to run them.

This book grabs hold of you and pulls you into it, making you unable to let it go until you have finished the very last word.

The title of my review says it all: definately one of Stephen King's best.

Summary: Four Stars ?
Review: I am questioning if Stephen King even wrote this book. Humm its not bad if you can look past the lack of direction,...poor character development, and waste of human life it would take to give this standstill a read. Do yourself a great favor and sit upon your porch and watch the grass grow ,...its a more thrilling time.

Summary: It'll keep you turning the pages right to the end
Review: I'm not renowned for reading a book twice. In fact it's a VERY rare habit based on the premise that, if I know what's going to happen, I won't enjoy it second time round. However, I made an exception with Tommyknockers because my memories of it had begun to fade. What I discovered on second reading was the depth of Stephen King's writing. Knowing the storyline and the ending probably gave me more time to savour the text and, though King is a genius commercial writer as opposed to a pretentious literary scribbler, there are phrases and structure in this book that evade all but the most accomplished authors. Let's ignore the story (there are plenty of reviews to tell you about that) and just concentrate on the writing. The hero is a troubled alcoholic poet, Jim Gardener, who comes to check on his friend Bobbi who, unknown to him, has uncovered a UFO. There's much in the character of Gardener that escapes through the line spacing first time round. His readings at poetry meetings suddenly take on a new meaning when you're not concerned about the 'plot'. Maybe King based his characterization on his own view of himself. If so, The Tommyknockers gives a real insight into 'The Master'. But then King has always been top of the tree when it comes to characterization, so maybe he just imagined it all in his head. If so, it's an even more remarkable feat. The Tommyknockers is amongst King's best works. If you've not already read it, add it to your shopping basket right now.
