Summary: Perhaps King's Finest Tale
Review: The Gunslinger, written over the space of twelve years, is perhaps King's finest, most poetic tale. No other character in all of his work is as well-crafted or mesmerising as Roland of Gilead. We not only learn of his heartache, and motivation, and humanity, but we live them through clear, descriptive writing (despite the abundance of adverbs).

Many people struggle through the beginning. I urge you to push on. The reward will come. The gun battle in the town of Tull is furious, written with a precision for detail achieved by few writers. Roland's battle with his teacher Cort, for the right to be a Gunslinger, is easily the most triumphant scene of King's I have ever read.

By the time you reach the end you will be eager for the next three books, and urging King to write the fifth, sixth, and seventh installements, as he has promised. You will wonder how you have gone without Roland of Gilead for so long, and the Dark Tower will be part of you.

Summary: Not one of King's best
Review: The Gunslinger never drew me in like some of King's other novels. The characters are too shallow for one thing. The story seems to just drag on un-necessarily as well, which is pretty bad considering it is a fairly short read to begin with.

I might read the rest of the series eventually, but for now I'm in no hurry to be disappointed further, by such a great author.

Summary: A good yarn with lots of twists
Review: I usually never read Stephen King books. However, I was intruiged by the title of book 4, so i bought it and when i realized it was part of a series, i ran out and bought books 1 & 2. I started book one and was immediately drawn in to the world that he created. The character of Roland seems to be very deep--i never know when something from his past is going to come up. I didn't like the character of Jake. I don't really see what overall purpose he served--other than the one he did. I can't wait to start the next book.

Summary: Enter a world like no other...
Review: I don't like Stephen King's novels. I find them dull, wordy and they are some of the only books I can't finish. Then I came across The Gunslinger. It is a book of magic, of another world, of pure and unadulteraded genius. This is the series Stephen King was born to write. From the first sentence you are drawn into the world of the Gunslinger. And you don't escape until you reach the end of the book. I couldn't put this book down and when I finished I read it all over again. I'm not going to go into a long description of the book, I wouldn't do it justice. You have to read this one for yourself. Enter the world of imagination, and from what I gather if you are a King fan, you may recognise some of the characters. The only critisism I have is when is the author going to give us the next book in the series?? I can't wait.

Summary: Standin' on tha corner straight slingin' guns
Review: "The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." Never before has a more succint-cum-intrigue introductory line been printed. (not since the opener to Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451 that is: "It was a pleasure to burn.")

The Gunslinger is one of the most romantic (think Hemmingway, Nelson Algren) novels of all time. Our hero is the last of the Mohicans, so to speak, in a land where shi--err--stuff has happend and the world has moved on.

Desolate disaster and death lies behind every town's facade and there is one man who can possibly put an end to the wrong; a true man that can but try: the gunslinger. He escapades across desserts and mountains in search of the Dark Tower--the eiffel that holds the worlds (Earth, his world, and the existing others) together. Along the way he meets a boy named Jake. Jake is a piece of the puzzle that the gunslinger must solve, a pawn to the Dark Man's chess game.

It is a blood-sworn journey the gunslinger is on. His past, his training, and lost lovers are stops along the way. The only solution he knows lies in his Sandalwood grip pistols crisscrossing his midsection. It is a sad tale, but a very palatable one if you reflect on how our world too has moved on.

If you love King or hate him, let The Gunslinger set the record straight. It is the first in a (currently unfinished) Dark Tower series and is like nothing King has ever pinned. It is a dark novel which exists in sour dreams. The best, the best King has done. It's straight from the hip of his drug-addled past (a fact that is evident in the novel).

This book is one that has been overlooked by movies, universities, demagogues and egotists, but mark my words: The Gunslinger will emerge in the 21st century as a powerful novel, as evident and poignent in society as Romeo & Juliet; once dissected, will be served in High School along with sloppy joes, John Steinbeck.

Summary: The best yet
Review: This book had me hooked from when I started it and read the opening line of "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed". The world that King creates is so strangely like our own. The only thing about this book is that he spends too much time on flashbacks and doesnt explain enough about them. It takes only a little away from the book and the rest is enough to keep you reading long into the night. I cant wait to get the next one! Keep writing Mr. King, and give us a 5th book soon!

Summary: A Classic Worth Repeat Readings
Review: I have always been a fan of Stephen King's books, and the Dark Tower series is no exception. I originally read The Gunslinger about three years ago and was unable to put it down until I finished with it. Not only does this book create the perfect beginning to an excellent saga, it could also be used as a stand-alone story. The quality of the writing and the pace at which it flows are done masterfully and to this day, I still think this is one of King's best books. From the opening sentence, "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed" to the closing paragraph, this book will have you hooked.

I have read and reread this book three times in the last three years, and I plan on reading it many more times as each time I read it I feel as though I know the gunslinger (Roland) even better. Don't miss out on this book.

Summary: #1 of the Dark Tower Saga
Review: This is the beginning of a tale, that is still not finished, and may not finish before I die. If it ends before King's dispare, I wonder....

As I started on this one I was litterly pulled into a new world. Never have I been so absorbed bij a book. I 'ate' the complete saga in a month. The book(s) wanted and confinced me to keep reading. I was addicted to the romantic but harsh world of Roland. The combination of present, past and future are magnificant. You will live the life and adventures of each character. This men is the King of story-telling. I read at the cost of my own health, almost like drug. I didn't sleep, but read for a week, when I noticed that THAT was a tad odd. But I read them where and when I could. School, work, home, at my FORMER girlfriends house. People would call me crazy. And it was. I hope I'll never run in to a saga like this one again.

Summary: Not your usual Stephen King but one of the Bes! ! !
Review: First off I'm sick of all the wannabe writers who have to wright a huge reveiew so lets cut to the chase. This book is great with a great story and a great character that keeps you turning pages. Yes this book does leave you asking a lot of questions but it's supposed to do that for the sequels. I already started the next one which is already great and I am already looking forward to the next two.

Summary: Takes a few pages to get started.
Review: This one took a few pages to get started, but once it got going, it was tough to put this book down. This is definitley something different from the standard King novel. The main character is Roland of Gilead. The last of his breed of the once feared Gunslingers. From crossing the desert in search of "The Man In Black" to his shootout in a not so friendly town, this is the start of the best tale ever written. And the story isn't over yet. One of the first lines of the book is "The Man in Black crossed the desert. And the Gunslinger followed". Hopefully you will pick up this book and follow it's trail all the way to the end at the side of Roland.
