Rating: Summary: Not Great, Not A Classic Review: The Story Of The Eye is a major let down. Yes, the (...) scenes are morbidly interesting, and the ending of Part One is certainly a shocker, but (...) scenes and a shock ending do not a great novel make. There is no character development. The narrator learns nothing from his "adventure", learns nothing from the deaths in the novel, learns nothing from his libidinous mistress. As for plot, it is rather boring. It moves from situation to situation as if on automatic pilot; there is no build-up of interest or suspense, nothing to keep you wondering, "What will happen next." Thematically, there is a real opportunity here to explore desire...but the author misses the opportunity. Don't let The Eye's reputation as a scandalous, banned book fool you - it simply is not very good.

Rating: Summary: How can anyone like this book? Review: This book has no artistic value whatsoever. You may as well buy a porn magazine. Even if you can get past all the disgusting sexual details, there is no substance to the story. It's extremely disturbing and twisted. I felt guilty just reading it. Don't buy this book if you have a weak stomach or if you like the books you read to have a plot or some kind of meaning.

Rating: Summary: Bataille was a visionary and a hero. Review: This book is not only the Story of The Eye, it is also in a way the story of us all. Bataille, the apostle of defilement, offers us all that is the converse of contemporary Christian morality: he probes our minds in, perhaps, the same way the monster under the bed would probe a little girl's urinary tract. Everyone in America should read this book, willingly or not.
Rating: Summary: Interesting & Intriguing Review: This book is so small that it is definitely an easy one night treat for a seasoned reader. I enjoyed it and found it completely interesting and definitely before it's time. I had to keep reminding myself when it was written! It was sometimes hard to understand the language and context, but the further you read along, the more clear it became. There were a couple of pretty disturbing chapters and is not for the faint of heart. I am a die-hard Stephen King fan and found it delicious. It definitely has lots of shock value! ENJOY!!
Rating: Summary: WOWZZY Review: This has to be one of the incredible books I have ever read. Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down, honestly. highly recommend this.
Rating: Summary: Make sure your seat belt is fastened Review: This is not a book for the faint of heart. But it is a book for one who enjoys exploring the darker side of life. Georges Bataille, in this, his first novel, sets the stage for his works to come where he explores sexuality and death. Pornography (although I hate to use that term because of today's association) is presented in "The Story of the Eye" as a true art form.
Rating: Summary: Beatifully written Review: This is probably the most perverse, and yet one of the most beautifully written, books I've ever read. It's hard to categorize it because there really isn't that much of a genre for this kind of literature. And I do mean LITERATURE. It's also literature in the best sense of the word. A very strange read, if ever there was one. Not for the faint of heart.
Rating: Summary: A Gothic Glimpse Into Undergound Reality. Review: This tale travels in lurid sketches detailing the experiences & experiments of 3 people who lived up at their own & got away with it.Their obsessions & fantasies executed in highly mysterious & near supernatural imagery leave a detachingly cold atmosphere in short & cluttered sentences occassionally highlighted by bits of lyricism.Their sinister perversions & mania for the gravel of sexual satisfaction & eventual accomplishment of this stretches the boundaries of subcultural degeneracy a bit furhther. The characters analogousness in each undertaking exemplify mankind fulfilling the natural dictates of what I would call the "Basic Fixative Essence" of things.Simone's fascination for the things she satisfies herself on is a perfect illustration of man rediscovering the core of his basest desires.Fetishisms arise in ecstatic motions in this slightly revolutionary novelette, including the famous augmentation of the sex impulse through the rending sights & scents of nature. The piece powerfully ends in a revealing sadness surprising for it's romantic symbolitry imprinted by an unforgettable vision of sight. These works of art are best appreciated when one has no preconceived notions;when one can enter it's world & LIVE IN IT rather than merely browsing through.
