Rating: Summary: Exquisite Corpse Review: This is the first book that I have read from her and let me tell you that it is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. Yes, it is very disturbing, very graffic and very very hard to put down. But if you like any Erotic Horror books then this will be right up your alley.
Rating: Summary: Gay serial killers with aids? What's not to love? Review: poppy z brite is one of few very talented authers who has the ability to disgust me and infatuate me at the same time. the way she describes every place, person etc makes the book so realistic that the images are burned in my brain long after i finished the book. exquisite corpse took me to the edge of a nervous breakdown and left me hanging there for days. when i finished it, i just went right back to the first page to make sure i had actually read the book and hadn't just woken up from some strange, crazy nightmare. i love this book, however because of poppys unique and often graphic writing style i wouldn't suggest it to just anyone, especially those who lack strong stomachs. (or those with particularly high moral standards)
Rating: Summary: Dahmer Copycat/Homo erotic Book Review: I had never read a book by Poppy Brite before this one. I read all of the reviews warning me about this book, about how graphic it was and how it would stand out in my mind and that I should proceed with caution while reading this book. After all the hype it was a definite let down. The graphic details about the murders were all exactly like I had already read about in the 8th grade when I did a report on Jeffrey Dahmer. It was surprising and stood out in my mind then, but unless you know nothing about serial killers this book will not stand out. The bad things were exactly like Dahmer: boiling head to peal skin off the skulls, vats of acid to deposit bodies, necrophilia, cannibalism, it's all in my 8th grade report. The only part of the book that was disturbing to me was the graphic despcriptions of the homosexual relationships. I felt like I was reading a homosexual porn book at times. She described that more than the actual murders. I have nothing wrong with homosexuals, I just don't like reading graphic details about what they do. I don't like reading that about heterosexual people either, and that's why I don't read porn or romance novels. I thought I was getting a different book when I bought this one, but I was sadly mistaken. Like my tile says, I felt it was a Dahmer Copycat/Homo erotic book. It might be the book for you, but I definitely wasn't impressed!!
Rating: Summary: Just Plain Wonderful! Review: I bought this book and in less than one day i finished it. I just couldnt put it down. I even read it while i ate (which may be gross for some people because of the content) but i just loved the book. I have read Lost Souls and I have been looking for other books by Brite, so when I saw EC at the bookstore and i read the back, i had to buy it. I couldnt believe the description in it, I had to feel sorry for some of the people, then at the same time happy for the others. It was just a beautiful book. The ending was even great. I dont read too many books where the ending was even just good, but the ending in EC was beautifuly done. I recomend this book to everyone, even if you have a quesy stomach, it is just one book you cant live without reading. It opens your eyes to a lot of things. Dont take my word for it, read it yourself, today!
Rating: Summary: Not for the warmblooded Review: I must give a warning about the book to every person who wants to read it. I even forbade some of my closest friends touching this book. I found the content to be very graphic and very real. In other words, I'd like to describe it as "hard core"! Being a heterosexual male, I would never expose myself to homosexual pornography, not even out of curiosity. And this book has successfully taken me into a world of homosexual maniacs, necrophiliacs, and cannibals. Someplace I would never want to venture on my own - a little bit too close to another man's orgasm, and another man's exposed organs. I thank Poppy for opening this dark world to me, even though I doubt that I would read other books in the similar style. I give it five stars. Recommended for all those who think you've seen it all.
Rating: Summary: Profoundly Disturbing. Review: I have read all of Poppy Z. Brite's work. I was so happy to have discovered her about 5(?) years ago. She was a breath of fresh air - writing to a younger generation of Anne Rice Fans. And I have always long anticipated new releases of Ms. Brite's. I give this book 5 stars because it is amazingly vivid. The writing is very very real and nearly puts you in the situations of the characters. Much more vivid than any of her other works. However I cannot say that I enjoyed the book. The subject matter was horrific. I thought I could read just about anything. But the images that she impresses on your mind with these words do not just go away after closing the book. I certainly would not recommend the book to a friend without a forewarning. The book is very well written, but I would not want to fall asleep anytime soon after having read it.
Rating: Summary: Don't Close Your Eyes... Review: Try curling up at bedtime and reading the fascinating horrific detail of this grisly tale. Poppy will make your skin crawl with her darkest novel yet. Exquisite Corpse is written in stark detail... that puts you directly in the path and mind of a serial killer with a penchant for young sweet boys. One of those books that makes you want to leave the light on and travel with one eye over your shoulder.
Rating: Summary: Don't let the gore scare you, good novel for any Brite fan Review: Just to begin, this was the second book that I read from Poppy (the first being Drawing Blood) and I was just as drawn into her writing in this novel as I have been before. It's a much more risky subject matter, and Brite doesn't hide anything, but I was very intrigued by the psychological peices to this puzzle. Each of the killers had their own processes and obsessions. The only downfall, I must agree, is that the ending was cut off very quickly. I do think that this is for any true Brite fans who aren't disturbed by the truths and realities that she points out, no matter how many of her novels you've read. This is the mind of a killer, there's your warning. Good book by a great author. I enjoyed every bloody minute. Just call me Fido
Rating: Summary: the literary equivalent of a snuff movie Review: while i truly loved american psycho and thought it a good and worthy book, i never thought i'd ever read anything quite so upsetting or graphic or gruesome again. how wrong i was. while bret easton ellis succeeded in making me feel periodically nauseous at the horrific deeds being commited in his book, poppy z. brite managed to make me feel unclean and deeply disgusted too. the characters in this book struck me as so ugly and depraved, so morally bankrupt, that i found it impossible to derive even the merest hint of guilty pleasure or reward from reading it. which i can only guess was the author's intention.
Rating: Summary: Offensive and insulting to one's intelligence. Review: I will start by saying that I could not put this book down. I am a lover of horror and gore, and the descriptions were revolting, stomach-churning, and multi-dimensional/sensorory overload. It was exciting (for a moment) to think that there is a writer out there that could really shock me and give me the creeps. HOWEVER..... I was offended and insulted that every gay character in this book was psychotic, depressed, and or suicidal. This is irresponsible writing, and truly only perpetuates negative and innacurrate stereotypes, that the uneduacted and religous zealots will only use as fuel for their dangerous mental rhetoric, behavior, and beliefs. I am sorry that my hard earned money went into this hateful author's pocket. You owe humanity a big ol' apology for such exploitation.
