Summary: Brite fan incredibly disappointed
Review: I was deeply disappointed in this book. I believe that the public became so caught up in the sheer vulgarity and grossness of her previous works that she felt she should give them what they wanted. In doing so she sacrificed the plot and the depth of the characters. I could not even become emotionally involved when handsome young Tran met his end. In Brite's previous works the raw sexuality and graphic violence was beautiful and meaningful, in this book it was ugly and pointless. I gave it a three for the mere fact that it was written by Brite, and the descriptions of New Orleans were as colorful as in her other books. If i wanted to read something this dull I would go read a magazine article on good ol' Jeff Dahmer, although it would not make me as sick to my stomache as this book did. Ms. Brite, (if you ever happened upon this review) if your point was to shock, disorient, or cause severe controversy, mission accomplished...Now how about giving us something worth reading again? --Akasha97

Summary: Disappointed
Review: My one-line summary says everything. I had a general feeling that she was going in for shock-value, trying to get her readers to gag. It seemed that that was the single purpose of the book. Her ending to the story was a cop-out. She really should have developed her characters more, they were hollow and did not feel real. The way that Jay and Andrew met was...to be blunt...unbelievable. It was a "hello, I'm a psycho-killer." type meeting. All I can say is that she needed to expand on her characters, cut back on surrounding descriptions, and make the plot more believable. Maybe then I would have gaged. :Sonja

Summary: Grossed out
Review: Homoerotic necrophagy- what more can I say? I made myself read to the end (and had enjoyed "The Butcher's Theatre" (not Brite's) except for a few images) just to see if the story justified the means. Not for me- grooooghh.

Summary: Not for the feint of heart, nor straight of lace...
Review: Poppy Z. Brite, an impish young thing who looks sweet enough to pass muster as June Cleaver's daughter-in-law, has written a love story that is steamier than the French Quarter after a summer thunderstorm. The lovers, a pair of gay, serial killer cut-ups of the Jeffrey Dahmer / John Wayne Gacy persuasion, share two passions: helping wayward boys to get off the streets - and elegant dining. It's a beautiful story, one that will tear your heart out!

Summary: I had to watch a comedy to keep sane after reading this
Review: Holy crap. this book is *_SICK_*. Is that emphasized enough?? I really thought I would enjoy this book, I enjoyed all of Poppy Brites previous books, but this one was too phycho... Actually, I did enjoy it while I was reading it, pretty much, but the ending got to me. I really wanted Tram to go home with Luke and have them die of AIDs together or something. I know the author didn't write this book for me, but that would have been great. When I was finished with this book, I felt like *#$@!. Like I thought of all those things. I even had a NIGHTMARE!!! Oh No! If your a sick crazy person don't read this. You'll go ballistic. Please for the sake of the world don't read it!!!! But if you're just some normal dude who likes horror ficton, go ahead. AHHHHHHHHH!! I can't even think straight. See what this book did to me??????

Summary: Descriptions So Good You Can Taste the Wall Paper!
Review: The horror genre has a new Queen of detail in the writings of Poppy Z. Brite. In Brite's latest novel, Exquisite Corpse, we sit back for a ride through the lives of two serial killers who find each other and fall in love. From the scinitilating minds of both serial killers, to the vivid depiction of the New Orleans most of us never see Brite's novel is captivating. While not for the light of heart this book brings Goth Horror to new heights. I enjoyed Brite's ability to create a story where you never thought you would find one. Brite's characters draw you in, her writing style keeps you, and her details and descriptions leave you begging for more.

Summary: This book is filthy, but, yes! I love it.
Review: Well.... I've read all poppy's books, they're all about beautiful homosexuals and murder. But this one is WORSE. Bodily fluids are really streaming of the pages this time. Still it is wonderfully written, you really experience it (and all her books) with ALL your senses. I think this is a very interesting book, but I don't think psychotic people should read it.

Summary: Poppy should just take up writing gay porn full time...
Review: ...since it seems like that's what she's most interested in. DRAWING BLOOD started off promising till it turned into an endless series of sex adventures between the two main characters. Um, could we get back to the *story*, please?

Well, EXQUISITE CORPSE is even worse. You can't go five pages without one of the characters fantasizing about how he'd love to do one of the others up the rear. Once again Poppy abandons her story for a lot of homoerotic fantasy that does nothing but bog the book down and take up space. Such tedium along with a cast of entirely unlikeable characters (another of the author's weaknesses) made the book nearly unreadable for me.

I really liked LOST SOULS a lot and I thought I'd give Brite another chance after being disappointed by her second novel, but I think this is it for me.

Summary: Poppy Z. Brite can make you want anything
Review: I am a young heterosexual female vegetarian who just submitted a review on a children's book, but when I read about Andrew Compton sitting back in a train and lovingly eating a sandwich made of human flesh lightly fried in butter I wanted to break in and ask him for a taste

Summary: EQ is a gut-wrenching but ultimately catharctic book.
Review: Exquisite Corpse challenges the reader in many ways, not the least of which is that the reader is drawn in to understand that serial killers are people too. Ms. Brite writes from the killers' perpective and one begins to comprehend that the serial killer's mind, though perhaps twisted aplenty, is not really illogical. Poppy takes the reader through vivid descriptions of horrible acts but this is not done in an indulgent manner. It's just of part of these peoples lives. EQ is highly recommended if one is prepared, perhaps, to face things about oneself that are beyond (way beyond) the realm of the ordinary
