Rating: Summary: Gory, entertaining but a little weak for PZB Review: I have read everything Poppy Z. Brite has published and was hyped when Exquisite Corpse came out. I was completely enthralled with Andrew Compton. His whole story was like a "true crime" stoy and I loved that! The AIDS awareness was done well I thought, but maybe slightly over kill. No pun intended. Although I tried I could not conjure feelings for ill fated Tran, however. And I thought the end was a bit of a let down as I wanted Something Big to happen. But it also left it open to your imagination as to how anyone could go on after something this horrific happening to them, around them or to someone they loved. I recomend this book to steadfast fans of Poppy Z. Brite, but I would not offer it to a friend as I do not feel it is her best work. LostSouls and Drawing Blood are at the top of that list.
Rating: Summary: EXQUISITE CORPSE Review: This has to be one of the most fantastic books I have ever read. Her characters are not only real, but display what real people are like. I found myself hateing and loveing the different characters and it is very difficult to actually become attached to a character when they are mostly cardboard. Though her style in this book is much more gory than I am used to by her, I found it to be a most enjoyable and wonderful way to read. It is not every day you can find a book that makes you so sick that you must put it down and settle your stomach! Other books by Poppy Z. Brite include Drawing Blood. This is the first one of her books I read, and it made me a true lover of her work. I would have to say that she has certainly matured as a writer when it comes to her later work compaired to her recent. It seems she has found more ways to work her magic into our minds, and in my case, my stomach! I do hope to see more of her work in the future, and Poppy, if you are reading this, just know that I am by far your biggest fan, and can only hope to be a fantastic writer like you someday. You may be asking yourself why it is I gave this book five stars. You have to look at the aspects of her style. She writes in a way that, as I stated above, can work wonders right into your mind. Her books, especially this one, was impossible to put down and a heart brake to finnish, as I have found with all of her books. She seems to have re invented the murderer in this book, and it seems like she is a damn good inventor! So, I give this, and much more praise to anyone who will listen, Poppy Z Bright is a fantastic and soulful writer that desirves much much more than she gets in terms of recognition. I cannot talk of most places, but most people around here have not herd of her. I can only hope she will have a priority over King and Koontz some day. In conclusion, I have to say that if you have not read this book yet, don't! You really have to read her earlier works, like Wormwood, Lost Souls, and Drawing Blood to truely understand her as a person as well as a writer. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: An exquisite book. Review: This was the first bookby Poppy Z. Brite that i read, and i must say it is my favourite. It has brilliant characters, and gives a superb insight into the warped mind of a serial killer. Anyone who viewed serial killers as mere monsters will change their mind after reading this. And the ending is sensational.
Rating: Summary: a personal message written for me in between the lines.... Review: This is the third time I have attempted to write a review for this novel, so my heart is hardly in it, please forgive that. I am an die hard fan of Poppy's work, my second copy of LOST SOULS (my first stolen by an ex who swore he could smell me in the pages, go figure) is well worn and tattered, and I have still yet to give myself over to the world of DRAWING BLOOD, (I've only read it once or twice) but although I did like the book, even I must admit that it wasn't her best. NOT because it was "almost a step by step account of Dahmer's killings" like so many have made it a point to bludgeon into our heads, because I don't see that as "unoriginal" at all, I never really cared about what Dahmer did, was glad when they killed him, but I never really got into what he did to any of those poor men. Now, after reading that book, it scared me more knowing that something like that HAPPENED, and it brought me closer and not so unattached to those murders. So how can it be "unoriginal" to bring these atrocities to the view of a person (like me) who truly didn't give a damn about some poor gay kids that got killed, and now, thanks to her, it touched me. The gore, however "unaccurate" (last I checked she was writing a novel, not a medical journal) was as fun as it usually is, allowing the reader to delve into the fantasy of death and causing it, before they step back into the reality of life. The only problem I had was that the novel itself seemed too rushed, without the layers of beautifully laid out detail like in LOST SOULS and DRAWING BLOOD. What this novel screamed to me the whole time is "my publisher is down my throat to finish this, and I'm sorry we're not having as much fun as we usually do!" a personal message from Poppy written in between the lines.
Rating: Summary: UNPLEASANT BUT BRILLIANT Review: I'll admit I was a bit worried starting this book because I was so disappointed with the Crow novel the author wrote. But Exquisite Corpse was awesome! Mrs. Brite has a wonderful way of scaring the living daylights out of me, and she really went beyond anything I could've imagined with this book. I really enjoyed the amount of time she took to develop every character within the story without getting too drawn down into it. The other neat things was the book was just the right length. It wasn't too short or too long, plus the ending was perfect. For a reader who's constantly bored with serial killers and cannibals, etc., Mrs. Brite really has taken this kind of fiction to a whole new level.
Rating: Summary: She gets it right Review: Having been a professional mortician for the past seventeen years, I can testify that contrary to some readers' claims Ms. Brite's descriptions of human anatomy and dissection are very good, as well as poetic and often sexy. She obviously did her research.
Rating: Summary: the book was the best killing book ever Review: to tell you the truth, i really don't read a lot. when my friend told me about it, i got interested. i really got into the killers thoughts. it was sick in some parts, but that is the mind of a sicko we read about. i was wondering, that part when the killer held his breath and everyone thought he was dead, can someone really do that? just wondering, thats pretty fasinating. well give me your feedback (to whom ever this conserns)
Rating: Summary: Excellent, wish there are more stories like it out there. Review: A real fascinating love story. Only she can turn a relationship between two serial killers into a romance. Enjoyed every moment of it, more so than Cooper's Frisk or any vampire stories I read.
Rating: Summary: I'd give it a 10 if i was gay. Review: This is my first exposure to Poppy's novels, i enjoy her short fiction immensley. It seems to me however that if she wishes to continue to write novels, she might want to enter into the gay porno genre... The four and five page descriptions of sex do nothing but bog down an otherwise interesting and compelling work of horror fiction. She does quite well with devel;opment of unusual characters who come from obscure backgrounds and the seemingly wild nightlife of New Orleans. The twisted love triangle that forms is quite interesting. Well worth the read if you can wade through the annoying sex scenes.
Rating: Summary: Good, but I still say Lost Souls is best. Review: Some say that Brite's work wasn't her's but truely Dahmer's. That doesn't bother me cause I find it makes it makes it more realistic and I'm into Dahmer-esque stuff myself anyway. I liked Andrew Compton the most, but the other characters didn't draw me in as characters in her other stories. If you really like Poppy's work or are into Jeffrey Dahmer, this is a must read.
