Rating: Summary: DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES by Carlene Thompson Review: This writer just keeps getting better and better! The suspense never lets up in this mystery, and the corpses keep piling up as well. The heroine is a spunky veterinarian with a bossy father. She has come home to recover from a broken relationship, but scary things keep happening instead of the peaceful time she anticipated! That's all I'm saying as I don't want to ruin the story for anyone.
Rating: Summary: SPINE-TINGLING Review: Veterinarian Natalie St. John returns to her childhood home of Port Ariel, Ohio, a town nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, in hopes of finding solace for her broken heart. She is instead thrown into a situation that threatens her life and the lives of her loved ones. Natalie and her friend Lily find the body of Tamara (Lily's twin sister). Was it an act of random violence or something more personal? The answer soon becomes clear as the corpses keep piling up, and Natalie feels as if she is being watched. Police Chief Nick Meredith swears he will keep Natalie safe, and pretty soon it becomes clear that the urgency he feels is because he is falling for Natalie. DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES is one of those books that keeps your heart racing and your body tensed up until the very spine tingling, awesome ending. There are many characters in the book that are well defined and believable. Believe me, you'll never guess who the slasher is until the very last minute, and that's what makes DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES such a nail biting mystery. This was my first Carlene Thompson mystery, and it definitely won't be my last.
Rating: Summary: Unexpected Pleasure Review: When I read that this book is a mystery in the tradition of Mary Higgins Clark, I almost didn't buy it. Not that Ms. Clark isn't good, but she has become a bit predictable. I am glad I took a chance and bought this novel, however. First of all, although Thompson can be a violent at times, the "scare factor" far outweighs any thrills thrown at us by Ms. Clark. Thompson's characters are vividly drawn and eclectic, and her description of place, particularly of an old resort called The Blue Lady, is so tangible one feels as if one has actually been there. If there is a fault in this book, it is that occasionally action rushes along too fast. If in life events happened with such dizzying speed, police would no doubt be bewildered and unable to figure out anything unless they were geniuses. Our hero, though, seems to be near genius level on the IQ scale, so we are not surprised when with the help of our equally intelligent heroine, the mystery is quickly, if shockingly, solved. I intend to take a look at Ms. Thompson's previous books.
