Rating: Summary: Engrossing Thriller That Kept Me Guessing Review: "Strangers" at times treads familiar Koontz territory: a large cast, intricate plotting, bizarre plot twists, and the contradiction between life as we know it and life as it really is. The main protagonists -- and there are quite a few in this book -- are exceptionally well drawn and complex: there's Dom the writer, Ginger the doctor, Brendan the priest, Ernie the ex-Marine, and Jack the ex-commando/thief, plus several others, who begin to experience strange, paranoid behavior. Eventually (and it's a 681 pp book, so it takes a while) the characters converge on a small motel in Nevada to find out what is happening to them. I can say that the explanation took me by surprise -- not the actual event, but the fact that I had several possibilities right up until the moment of discovery -- and was plausible within the world of the novel. I rank this book right up there with my favorite Koontz novel, "Midnight".
Rating: Summary: "Strangers In the Night..." Review: Unquestionably one of Koontz's masterworks.A number of people, from all over the country and who have no seeming connection to each other, begin suffering many of the same debilitating symptoms: inability to sleep, tortured dreams, panic attacks; and some of them seem to be followed around by mysterious Men In Black. Others still seem to be developing superhuman powers. One such sufferer sees the picture of another and contacts him, and they start piecing together what their problem is. They begin having recollections of suppressed memories, find the others undergoing the same psychic effects...and make an earth-shattering discovery. Superbly written, the book is overlong and padded with a few unnecessary scenes. It also dwells a bit much on the nature of faith, to the point of being a little preachy. But it is undeniably a superior work, carefully plotted, quite suspenseful, and deeply involving.
Rating: Summary: Best Koontz book so far Review: This one is my favorite. I love when Koontz writes about the supernatural and this was the best!
Rating: Summary: Spellbinding! Review: If you enjoy mysteries/suspense this will not let you down.My high mark might be attributed to the fact that this was my first exposure to Mr. Koonz's work, and since, he has been able to purchase that dream winter house on Coronado Island, because of all my successive Koonz purchases,(still waiting for an invite, Dean). If you like L. Sanders you should like this guy. It amazes me how others who reviewed didn't like it...boring??No way! Over development of characters? I think Koonz did a great job, without going overboard. You actually FEEL like you're there! I found the ending totally different than what I expected. Excellent book.
Rating: Summary: I literally couldn't put it down Review: I first read this book when I was in high school (and no, I'm not revealing when that was...). I remember that it was during the Thanksgiving weekend, and I read the almost 800 pages in 2.5 days. Suspenseful, with well-developed plot and characters. I was totally hooked. I recently picked up a copy in a used bookstore, and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. I've been disappointed with some of Koontz's later stuff, but this one was great!
Rating: Summary: A Winner! Review: STRANGERS was the book that made me an instant fan of Dean Koontz, I was hooked right away by his writing style. His books have horror, suspense, and usually a love story on the side. All the elements of perfectly satisfying reading. His characters are rich and interesting. The Main Character(s) in his books are always someone you would find next door, someone you would really like to meet. STRANGERS reminded me of the classic Twilight Zone stories, you're never ready for what is on the other side of that door? Be sure to pick this one up, you will truly enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: Managed to hold my interest... Review: This was one of the longest books I've ever read (the other being "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King). But, it managed to hold my interest to the very end and there was never really a dull moment (although I did get a little lost when all of Jack's technical equipment was being explained). But, other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you like a story that keeps you in suspense, this is definitely the one for you. The major gist of the story isn't even discussed 'til close to the end. Their are hints along the way, but just enough to keep stringing you along, making you want to know more and more. The message at the end of the story is one that benefits us all. Underneath the storyline is a moral for everyone to live by, which makes this book not only interesting, but inspiring as well. If you're a Dean Koontz fan, you won't be disappointed by this novel. If you're not a fan yet, you will be as soon as you read this.
Rating: Summary: FEELS LIKE HOTEL CALIFORNIA! Review: Feels like Hotel California because they are there of their own device! You will find out what that is soon because the book is to hard to put down! You will not forget these people or the motel.I felt like I was there and didn't want to leave by the time I finished the book. Please read ! one of his best YOU WILL LAUGH AND GET SCARED AT THE SAME TIME!
Rating: Summary: Most memorable book of his Review: I have read many other Horror novels by different authors but Dean Koontz stands out far ahead simply through this novel. The characters become real people in your mind and whats happening to them a real unexplainable horror. The ending to this book was excellent and to me quite surprising. Other novels of his that have equalled this books standard are Watchers, Cold Fire and the Christopher Snow books, keep an eye out for them Readers new to Dean Koontz for in my view there some of his best works. Anyone who enjoys books about characters who become involved in bizarre and strange events or deep and involved plots and conspiracies will enjoy a lot of Dean Koontz's novels. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Incredible page turner. Review: This is one of the most compelling and suspenseful books Koontz has ever written. I was so enthralled I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Several strangers find themselves experiencing bizarre repressed memories that eventually draw them to a small desert town and a small cafe where something supernatural happened to them... Brilliantly plotted and incredibly suspenseful. You won't be able to put this book down until it's harrowing climax.
