Rating: Summary: A story about human robots Review: "Stepford wives" from Ira Levin. I have read the book at school and I must say that this book is quite easy to understand, but I don't like the story of the book, because I don't like science fiction. And "Stepford Wives" is a kind of science fiction. The end of the book was a bit difficult to understand. In the book there are a lot of boring parts. It's a book which you cannot take seriously.
Rating: Summary: A Nightmare in Stepford... Review: "The Stepford Wives" has long been part of the American vocabulary, courtesy of the successful 1975 film. Most folks reading this review has either seen the film or at least has a good idea on what it is about. So is it worth bothering chasing down the novel (actually, a novella) now that it is out of print (in the USA)? The answer is yes, most definitely. For those who aren't familiar with the story, it is a gothic fable about a fictitious New England town where all the married women are, or quickly turn into the sort of wife many men would dream of: buxom, cheerful, and submissive in every way. But this utopia/hell is challenged by the arrival of a new family where the Mrs. seems to sense something is wrong ... and feels, with justification, she is in danger. The film does follow the book rather nicely, although the ending is a bit different. Fans of the movie will not be disappointed however. Bottom line: a short, nightmarish fable of 1970s Americana. No, it is not very believable. But it is well-written and thought-provoking. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: stepford wives Review: **** A REALLY MALE CHAUVINISTIC BOOK! I liked this book, it was a good sience fiction book. „The Stepford Wives" was easy to read, because all the new words were explain. The only thing that I didn't like was that the men won. I think the women were all really stupid! They didn't help themselves. They just looked on how they were going to be killed. I think the end would have been a better if the women had also changed the men! When you read the book, you really feel that a man has written it. I would recommend this book to all people, who like sience fiction.
Rating: Summary: Original but not terribly moving Review: A fun morning read of a few thousand words. The men of Stepford are replacing their wives with obedient, sexy robots who love housework. A bit of a satire on men who want such women, but overall, nothing special.
Rating: Summary: A real thriller Review: A most thrilling story about a family that moves from the hustle and bustle of New York, to Stepford a quiet suburb on the outer rim of the city. The Author drops subtle hints about the real sinister nature of Stepford. The women in Stepford appear to be a mans dream, always looking amazing, keeping the house immaculate, and cooking to their husband's delight. Joanna quickly finds out that the men's association are behind it all but is she quick enough? A short and surprising end that gives you few details but still leaves you with the horror of the story.
Rating: Summary: A 3 1/2 star book. Review: Although the book is good, it needs a bit more detail. A few times, when reading, I was not sure what was happening and I had to re-read a paragraph or two. Also, even though the book does not have much detail, you must pay very close attention or you will miss important points in the story. I rate this book 3 1/2 stars.
Rating: Summary: a special story Review: At first I thought that the Stepford Wives was a boring book. I didn't like the story because it was a bad and unreal story. But after the first 30 pages I liked to read it. It was interesting and I always asked myself how it will end! For every Monday we had to read a few pages and I always read the pages very quickly and I liked to read on. I think it's a simple story but the story is really thrilling. My favourite person of this book is Joanna because she know that something is wrong in Stepford and she try to find it out with the help of Bobby, her friend. At the end she know that she has become a robot herself. But she can't do anything against this horrible idea of the Men's Association. I like the whole book but I prefer stories with happy endings. So it's not the perfect novel for me. That's the reason for the four stars.
Rating: Summary: The book and movie are amazing Review: At the age of thirteen, I am just starting to break out of R.L. Stine and his wishy-washy stuff and get into adult thrillers. My dad recommended The Stepford Wives and I became very interested. I got it from the local library and was hooked. It was a quick read and kept my interest. And when I went over it again, I noticed the many twists in the plot, and as a writer myself, I was given some extra inspiration to write a novel I plan on publishing, which has a small bit of resemblance to The Stepford Wives, and it is mentioned a lot. Later on, I rented the movie. And I liked it better than the book! It was so good, and seeing a visual picture of Stepford and what a Stepford Wife looks like--other than what I imagined--was so great. The story was creepier, and if you happen to rent the movie, you'll love it too. I love the character Bobbie Markowe. She is really great. The movie's story is a little bit better, especially with a final scene with Bobbie and then the final scene in the Men's Association. Those were great. Though, my have to tip my hat to the final few minutes of the film. It was like a nightmare, but nothing was scary about it. I though it was so well-coreographed and put together. Once you see, you'll understand how amazing the final two minutes are. The Stepford Wives is one of the most amazing concepts of our time, and I think it had the biggest impact on me of all the stories I've read and movies I've seen.
Rating: Summary: Fast and compelling read Review: Even after finishing the book last night, I'm still confused. It was a really quick read, I polished it off in one sitting. But I feel like I missed something. It was a good book except for the fact that I'm still not sure what happened at the end. It's a fairly simple plot. Joanna Eberhart and her family move to the quite town of Stepford. She meets and befriends another woman, Bobbie. While the two of them set out to find other women who might be interested in organizing a womens group, all they can find are women who are interested in staying at home and cleaning the house. Soon, Bobbie and her husband decide to have a second honeymoon. But when she returns, all Bobbie wants to do is houseclean, just like all the other women.
Rating: Summary: Weird; goes along with a place like a "perfect" world Review: Good book. A real page turner. The quiet "town" turns out to be something you wouldn't suspect!
