Summary: Hard to read and confusing
Review: As a fan of Laurell Hamilton, I have all of the Anita and Merry series. Looking for something else to read, I decided to pick up her first book. I usually love fantasy novels but I expected a lot more from this first book.

I found the style of writing is very amateur - too much narative and more than a little boring. There is a lot of action in the story but with so many characters and so much going on, it gets confusing and hard to follow. You can see some plot elements and ideas that she expanded in her later books such as flirting with evil or a dark side, attracting men, a woman with confidence and power, which is interesting to see.

If you are a Laurell Hamilton fan, this is probably worth reading to become aquainted with how her writing has developed. ...

Summary: This book confused me
Review: Having read everyting else that Hamilton has written, I thought I would give this title a read. You can definitely see the precursors to Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry in the main character, however the enormous quantity of characters and the sometimes nonsensical plot turns left me re-reading passages to figure out what was going on. I'm pretty sure that it has a happy ending, but I wouldn't swear on it. The other reviewers are right, there are many unanswered questions and even as confused I was I wouldn't mind reading an sequels (or prequels) that may come along.

Summary: Not your usual Laurell K.
Review: If you're looking for Anita Blake this isn't it, however, that said it is a good Fantasy read. There are a lot of plot points that remain unresolved which makes you wonder if there was a second book in the works at one time, but all in all it's a nice effort worth reading.

Summary: Good book but leaves you hanging
Review: Keleios is a Sorcerer, enchanter, and a prophet, a unique combination of talents. She has sworn revenge upon Harque the Witch who had slain Keleios' mother when she was 5 years old. The book is well done-a lot of action, a good melding of sword and sorcery but there are many plot details that are left unfinished (like what happened to her friend Belor and the traitor Fidelis and what about the promised revenge on the evil council member Nesbit?) The book would have been great if it wrapped up more than just the straight forward story line or if there was a sequel to deal with the other things (and how do she and Lothar end up getting along?) but it isn't half bad as it stands.

Summary: Needs A Sequel!! Please!
Review: This is one of Hamilton's best works. She has created a great character in Kelios and a detailed fantasy world. She really needs to write a sequel(or a series).I have been waiting years for a sequel but I heard that her publisher wasn't interested.Let's hope that we the readers can change their minds and encourage Ms Hamilton to continue Kelios's Story.

Summary: Good first effort
Review: This first novel by Ms. Hamilton is about a half elven prophet/sorceress named Keleois, once a master, forced to return to school to master a new power. Once imprisoned by a witch and tortured by demons, she managed to kill one of them, and developed new powers. Followers of the witch are all around her, as is Lothar, another half elven prince determined to possess her. He is a dark healer and needs her to inherit his father's kingdom. Apparently there is some sort of competition between him and a brother. This novel is very entertaining, not up to her later standards, but excellent. The only problem is alot of loose ends that will never be tied up.

Summary: I love Hamilton's work!
Review: This book was fantastic, I read it in one night. I LOVED it! I am a big fan. I was utterly drawn into the book!
However there were two things that did bother me. One, I wished there was some way for the characters to renew their magic so when it was gone it wasn't TOTALLY gone. And secondly, I disliked the overdone motif of having the heroine be innocent sexually. For such a sensual writer this reticence is annoying because it takes away from Kelios' power! This 'chastity' issue shows up in Hamilton's books a lot. Both of these were minor points however and didn't take away from the glory too much.

Summary: The only one?
Review: This is a very enjoyable book. To bad this is the only time that Laurell wrote any fantasy books. This one book opened up a whole world that needed to be explored only to never have some questions answered.

If you want a light read and enjoy fantasy then pick this book up!

Summary: This book has magic, intrigue, love, lust, and revenge
Review: Her characters are compellingly real. I haven't re-read a book so much since Robert Jordan's: Wheel of time and C.M. Whitlock's The Price of Immortality. These are characters that stand up under repeated scrutiny. This book has magic, intrigue, love, lust, rivalry, and revenge, all the things a fantasy novel should be. I could not put it down. Anyone who doesn't like this book ought to get their head examined. If you liked this try the Anita Blake series it's really good. Of all her books this is my favorite and I am impatiently waiting for a sequel.
