Rating: Summary: Tight and quick. I couldn't put it down! Review: This was my first Peter Straub book, and I loved it. It gave me the creeps while providing a feeling of quality literature. The characters were genuine in their behaviors and I ended up caring a great deal about Mark Underhill and the situations he endures. I found myself hoping for young Mark to find a decent resolution to the death of his mother (and other family secrets). You can tell that Straub cares for his characters quite a bit as well.Call it Horror, Mystery, or whatever. But LOST BOY LOST GIRL is so much more.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book of the Year Review: Did it all really happen, or is it a story that Tim Underhill made up to cope with the loss of his nephew? This is a fantastic book with many layers. You could read it from cover to cover and take everything literally, and enjoy a good serial killer story. Or you could stretch your brain muscles and read between the lines. Much like the characters in the book I believe you, the reader, should not believe everything you see, or read. A hint that Tim Underhill might not be a reliable narrator comes at the very beginning of the book. Tim believes he is a witness to a hit and run accident that leaves a man dead. However it turns out that it was just a movie being filmed and the man hit by the car is fine. This just sets up that nothing in this book (even the book itself, in my opinion) is as it appears. When you're done with the book ask yourself, did I really read what I thought I did, or is there more in the background? I would love to go deep into examples of why I feel that Tim is an untrustworthy narrator, but I don't want to ruin anything for people who want to read this. Like I said you can read this as a straight forward mystery, or you can question the narrator and see where the answers to those questions take you. As the X-Files said: Trust No One
Rating: Summary: At least it was shorter than his usual! Review: The last book I read by Straub that I really liked was FLOATING DRAGON--but even that ended sort of dumb. Like King, Straub never knows how to end his books. I tried KOKO, MYSTERY and THE THROAT but ended up skimming or not finishing them. Tried again with HELLFIRE CLUB--skimmed it. Too long and "knowing" the endings would be poor, I gave up. But this book was short, and I was able to finish it in a couple days. By short, I mean it also kept Straub from going on and on and on and the poor ending isn't "that bad" and I DID finish the book -- no skimming! But I'd wait until it's in paperback.
Rating: Summary: Not Straub's best Review: A fan of Straub's Blue Rose Trilogy, I was eager to read about Tim Underhill's further exploits in Millhaven. In this case, I was disappointed. lost boy lost girl has many intriguing elements, and was at times truly scary, but the ending utterly failed to satisfy me. I felt like Straub copped to a supernatural ending when, in the past, he has kept Millhaven firmly rooted in the nightmarishly real. I never minded that his books were so long; if Mr. Straub could have come up with a tighter ending that did not shatter my willing suspension of disbelief, I'd gladly have read 100+ more pages.
Rating: Summary: Compact (for Straub) and Gripping Review: lost boy lost girl does fall apart a little in the end and, for once, I think the author, Peter Straub, could have expanded the story a little, as well as giving it a creepier ending that would tie the story together a little more tightly. There are a number of threads in this tight weave, though, and the reader will enjoy the build-up and the mystery as it unfolds. Tim Underhill is a wonderful character and his family makes sense in this book. The creeping horror quotient is high (and with a serial killer and a haunted house how could it be otherwise) and will carry the reader breathlessly through until the end when a little feeling of letdown may mar the experience. The author is still one of the masters and this is, for the most part, a fine example of his work.
Rating: Summary: Didn't like it Review: I am not a fan of this book. I am completely disappointed with it. The "preview" makes it sound terrific, but it is one big confusing circle of events. If the order of events were told in a different order, it might be a little easier to understand and a little easier to read. I did NOT like this book and I am pretty unhappy about spending $25 on it.
Rating: Summary: Lost Story, Lost Author Review: Straub's style is forced and tedious, almost as though he is trying to be too erudite but losing lucidity in the process. The potential for a good story is there, but too many loose ends and a failure to connect the two main themes betrays that potential. I thought I was reading Stephen King on a bad day.
Rating: Summary: I have only one thing to say Review: Thank you Mr. Straub.
Rating: Summary: do not read this in the dark Review: I just finished this book and will admit that I had to turn on all the lights in my apartment before I could comfortably concentrate. I couldn't put this book down. I didn't particularly love the ending, and I thought the cyberspace parts were corny, but the build-up was great and worth the quick read. Sometimes the story is scary enough to make up for the lame ending.
Rating: Summary: I agree Review: I just finished reading lost boy lost girl, yes I admit that i couldnt put the book down. but the ending didnt do it for me. I didn't think it satisfied me. The begininng had great detail, maybe way to much, but come on whats with that ending? no one finds Mark's body and we dont even know how he dies. And whats with the serial killer. not much is mentioned about this men, till the end of the story. and come on lily 19 falling in love with a 15yr old. yeah right. what kind of ghost is this. the kid is barely reaching puberty. besides that it scared me.
