Rating: Summary: I wish I knew James Cameron Review: Never have I read a book that was so frustrating. With every page I visualize it in full picture on a big screen, too bad I can't tell Cameron about it. From the gutt-wrenching violence to the blood churning gore this is, in it's own way, the most disturbing book I've read. So if you like books about ten yr. old boys toting shotguns and blowing the (-ahem-) out of the undead, this book is for you. END
Rating: Summary: Summer of Night deservs 7 stars Review: When i first picked up this book i thought it would be just like the "typical" horror book, but now, after reading this book i realized that i had come across a work of True horror. I loved this book and consider it to be the best book i have ever read. Powerful, smart, and scary and the characters are really easy to identify with. That takes the skill of a talented writer. Dan Simmons should be up there as one of the very few people who have topped Stephen King. Dan Simmons is a sculpter of, not only macabre and dark tales of your worst nightmares but is also the creator of science fiction realms beyond your wildest dreams. Dan Simmons stories are not only scary and wondrous but they are also smart and make you think. If anyone should get the title of best seller it should be Dan Simmons.
Rating: Summary: Real Fears, Really good Review: I really thought this story is one of the most well written horror books ever written. It brings basic scares to life. Scares that most all of us have had (ie being alone in a basement, chased by unknown evils, etc...) can be found in Summer of Night. I can honestly say that this is one of my top ten favorites
Rating: Summary: For three days I was a kid again. Review: Does anyone remember having secrete forts out in the woods and having very important hush-hush club meetings. Well, this book made me remember. There was many times that me and my pals were chased by our own versions of the rendering truck and bullies that somehow we always eventualy got the best of. Mostly there was the dreaded fear of the end of summer. This is the greatest book that exists.
Rating: Summary: The pinnacle of horror! Review: This should be the story told around the campfire, and the one that all other horror stories are measured up to.
Mr.Simmons paints a hauntingly beautiful image, with great detail to the little things. His characters were reminiscent of my own childhood friends and his story had me looking under the bed and checking the closets.
Rating: Summary: Is this the same Simmons who wrote HYPERION? Review: After reading the first couple of plodding Hyperion books I almost didn't bother with Summer. That would have been a terrible mistake. I have read this book so many times I am into my third(or fourth) copy. The story is rather standard horror, and handled by a lesser author (King?) would have been marginal at best. The characterization, and the "feel" elevate it beyond any other novel of its' type though. It takes me back to my youth and creates an atmosphere so strong it is almost impossible not to BE there and even tougher to come back. To explain the power of the prose is tough but I can see by the other reviews that it is pretty much a universal experience when reading this book. The only two bad points? Simmons seems to have peaked in his style with this book. Nothing else he has written even approaches the telling of this tale. Next would be the fact that this book is "hard to find" while most of the cookie cutter crap from King and Koontz sells like mad. If this story had Kings name on it it would have been one of the best sellers of all time. I hope they never make a movie of it because it would have to be three hours long, have a hundred million dollar budget, and they still would never capture the power of the prose which makes this story matter.
Rating: Summary: A Great Horror Review: Summer Of Night by Dan Simmons is a gret horror book! I live in the same city as Dan Simmons and attended shool at Central elementary, the school in which the story revolves around. I am greatful that Dan Simmons wrote this memorable book to bring back memories of elementary school and rumors of Central being haunted. But, that is not the only reason I like this book, I also enjoyed the unique way Dan Simmons writes. He is a great author and I reccomend this book to anyone who thinks they can handle the horror.
Rating: Summary: A novel of friendship and horror Review: I used to think that only Stephen King could write about real children in a horrifying supernatural situation and make you care, but Dan Simmons shows himself to be King's equal in every way. I can't read this book enough times.
Rating: Summary: A horror classic! Review: I read this book when it first came out. I have to admit that when I first picked it up, and saw a comment from Stephen King I was a bit leery, as I've disagreed with him in the past. Boy am I glad that I put that aside and read this book!!! Dan Simmons is amazing! As some other reviews said, you can almost feel the summer heat. I highly recommend Summer of Night to anyone that considers themself a horror fan.
Rating: Summary: Great characters, great book, you do not forget this book. Review: DAN SIMMONS is the best author I have read. This story has characters that you will remember for the rest of your life. My wife and I read contsantly and both of us consider DS the best, I thank my wife turning me on to this author. I gave this a 9 only because Dan Simmons has written two better books, Carrion Comfort and Children of the Night.
