Rating: Summary: A great first novel with minor flaws Review: "Jinn" is a wonderful first novel, and Mr. Delaney shows much promise. I expect great things from him in the future. That being said let me attempt to justify why I rated it at only three stars. Firstly, and I put all of the blame for this on St. Martin' Press and NOT the author, the editing of this book is horrendous. I have never seen so many misprints, extra words, words left out, and continuacy errors in one single book. Should you choose to read this, be aware that frequently you will have to infer the "real" meaning of a sentence. These could easily have been avoided with a decent editor. Shame on you St. Martin's Press. Secondly, many reviewers are completely blown away by the "twist" ending. Unfortunately, it's not that difficult to see it coming from a hundred pages away. Delaney does a good job of leading the reader right to it, almost giving it away. And thirdly, while I enjoyed the ending, it left me with an unfulfilled feeling. It seemed to just end. No wrap up. No epilogue. Just...end. As I said, this is a good read, with an original story and some very interesting ideas. I have great faith that Mr. Delaney will delight us with his next book - hopefully with a better editor.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding work! Review: Matthew Delaney is an author who is definitely here to stay. His writing is crisp, concise, and intriguing. His adjectives are always just right, never too much, teasing the reader to enlarge the mental scene by their own imagination. However, it takes quite an imagination to come up with anything as gripping and entertaining as JINN. Get busy, Matt, and let us have a sequel. Or something else as well done as this fine book.
Rating: Summary: I can't wait for his next book Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read a lot of books. I couldn't put it down and was late for a lot of things during the time I read it. Its a combination of thriller and mystery. The research in past times and places is very thorough and added a lot to the book for me. There is a romance, but it isn't gooey and it works into the overall resolution of the story. I don't usually recommend books, films or CDs as much of what I like others might not. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't faint of heart and likes a good mystery\thriller. If Mr. Delaney hasn't sold it to the films yet, he will. However, don't wait for the movie, read the book. And, I can't wait for his next book.
Rating: Summary: PAGE TURNER!!! Review: I took a chance on this book and it payed off big time. A very fun read that kept me up in the middle of the night for several days. This book had a little bit of everything. I was really impressed that it was the authors first book. I really cant wait to see what his followup book will be about. I hope the author stays with the horror element or mixes it in his books because he is very good at it. I was reminded of early DEAN KOONTZ or the late RICHARD LAYMON. Although I wouldnt be surprised if his next book is something totaly different because he clearly has the talent to do any kind of genre. If you read the book you will know what I mean. 5 stars!!
Rating: Summary: A Lock The Door, Leave the Lights On, Thriller! Review: If you like the horror genre, this is a book for you. From the first page I was hooked, could barely put it down. I DID close my closet door before going to bed last nite, I was that creeped out. Long, enjoyable story, never gets "stupid". You know, where you think "yeah like that would happen". Lots of action, a good scary, fun read. I look forward to more from Matthew Delaney.
Rating: Summary: FUN,FUN,FUN Review: This was a really fast and fun read. Action and horror, policemen in creepy citys and army men in wierd island wars. Nothing here that will expand your mind but a good time for all.
Rating: Summary: a reader from nahant, mass. Review: A Great Read, combination of Straub, Cannell and King. poignant and forceful narrative gives a strong urgency to the narrative. I finished the novel in two pleasant sittings. Mr Delaney's salient observations and strong story line leaves me eagerly awaiting his next tome. I felt the chapterless format a bold leap forward from such a young author. May this be e pluribus unum.
Rating: Summary: JINN Review: PEOPLE MAGAZINE SAID IT WELL - ITS A "PAGE TURNER"! SUSPENSE AND PLOT TWISTS ROLLED OUT IN WRITING THAT IS VIVID IN IMAGERY. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE.
Rating: Summary: delightful blend of the horror genre w a police procedural Review: By May 1943, the war in the South Pacific is a deadly island by island fight with moth sides suffering high casualties. However, the American marines and the Japanese military fighting on Bougainville Island find something else to terrorize them besides the war. They hear sick laughter in the night followed by a light where they gaze upon soldiers from both sides hung, impaled, beheaded, and a "creature" ripping through the stomach of a dead man from the inside. Private Eric Davis feels fortunate to escape when the Gallo picks him up, but the American vessel is promptly sunk. In 2007, undersea movie documentary director Pierre Devereaux directs an undersea filming of the wreck and subsequent raising of the Gallo. When the ship is brought to Boston, strange murders begin. Detective Will Jefferson investigates a double homicide following by more killings. Soon Will concludes that the culprit is a supernatural serial killer. Though too many sidebars cause clutter, this delightful blending of the horror genre with a police procedural and elements from other genres provide readers with a powerful tale. The story line is action packed regardless of the setting's era or locale. The key characters change depending on location, but enhance the feeling of terror. Quite descriptive and exciting, the JINN is a novel worth reading as the cretin comes across as a real nasty antagonist. Harriet Klausner
