Summary: One of the worst I have ever read
Review: Implausible and contrived...I have to wonder if I read the same book as other reviewers. A cop who knows nothing about the internet one moment, and is discussing proxy servers the next...a psychotic husband who became an accomplished computer hacker overnight...one contrived coincidence after another. Arrgggghhhh.

Summary: New story, same ending...
Review: Jeffery Deaver is pretty much in the top tier of male commercial authors who write imperiled women suspense novels. I'm thinking, of course, of the Rune series, SPEAKING IN TONGUES, A MAIDEN'S GRAVE, PRAYING FOR SLEEP, etc. Michael Prescott, who specializes in this motif and always had in his previous incarnation, is in the second tier and may be working his way up.

Anyone who remembers MORTAL PURSUIT will see similarities between Trish Robinson and C.J. Osborn. Both are imperiled female officers who share a frightening childhood incident- Both were stalked and almost killed by a "boogeyman."

The opening chapter was exceptionally done, I thought, one that cannot help but nudge memories that we've all had as children, of monsters under our bed and closets, faces at the top of the stairs, and assorted creaks and bumps in the night. However, CJ's encounter with the boogeyman is a real one and the disturbing phenomenon of child home abductions and subsequent homicides constantly in the news these days, one that seems to take place in FINAL BREATH's venue, gives the book perhaps an unintentional added emotional impact just as Shirley Kennett's FIRECRACKER related to schoolyard violence.

Fast forward sixteen years later. CJ Osborn is a gutsy, capable LAPD officer who's nonetheless shadowed by her childhood demon both literally and psychologically. Unlike Alex Kava's Maggie O'Dell, who in SPLIT SECOND is paranoid and hypervigilant to the point of hysteria, CJ's character is sensitively drawn and only watches out for her boogeyman out of the corner of her eye.

Of course, with a Deaver-esque twist, CJ is pursued by not one maniac but two. The final confrontation with the first one is quite reminiscent of the DIE HARD-like venue of Prescott's last novel, THE SHADOW HUNTER (in fact, Prescott even admitted to me that he was thinking of that movie as he wrote that scene in TSH) and the eponymous denouement involving the real boogeyman of CJ's past was generic and uninspired at best, calling to mind countless other endgame scenes featured in WATCH ME, CATCH ME, SPLIT SECOND, Prescott's own STEALING FACES (IMO, still the best book he's produced), THE SHADOW HUNTER, etc.

The language didn't seem as inspired as in Prescott's earlier efforts, the storyline didn't seem particularly original and I hope that Prescott's next venture, NEXT VICTIM, will prove to be more exciting and provocative than its bland title.

Summary: Prescott Never Disappoints
Review: Michael Prescott has done it again -- written a psychological thriller that won't let you stop reading. Catlin, or C.J. as she prefers to be called, is a tough L.A. cop with a past that has been haunting her since she was 10 years old. An intruder, whom she thinks of as the boogeyman, broke into her home and frightened her so badly she has never been able to get the experience out of her mind. Now, he's come back to find her, and this time, he vows not to leave empty handed. A few surprising plot twists heighten the suspense and keep the reader up late at night.
Prescott is not only a superb wordsmith, he writes in the female point of view more realistically than most male writers. "Last Breath" is a must for suspense fans.

Summary: Not bad, but not what I expected.
Review: Not a bad book but not what I was expecting, the first chapter thrilled me to death. I thought I was in for an exciting and scary read... but that's not what I got. Instead of being terrorized by the "stalker" first introduced at the beginning of the book, our main character CJ is being tormented by a person thought she "scorned" him. Riiiight. The real stalker played a very minor role in this book when I thought he'd be the main focus. Overall it wasn't a bad read, rather slow and boring in parts but not slow enough for me NOT to stop reading. :0) This was my first book by this author so I'd be willing to read more of his work before making a judgement.

Summary: Outrageous Suspense from the beginning to the end!
Review: This is the BEST book I have read in years, maybe ever! Michael Prescott is a masterful writer. He keeps the reader on the edge of their seats from the beginning until the very end. I was SO caught up in the characters as well as the plot that I think about the book everyday and wish I hadn't read it so quickly so I could still be enjoying it. I truly hope it is made into a movie as I believe it would be a "BLOCKBUSTER"! I have ordered Prescott's other three books, and I have pledged to read them more slowly to capture his vocabulary and style! Can't wait until December for his next book, WIPEOUT.

Summary: Exceptional
Review: This is the first book I've read of Michael Prescott. Absolutely terrific.... you've heard it before but I literally could not put the book down. Loved it!

Summary: Great Twist!
Review: This is the first Michael Prescott book I have read and I will be reading more! The "boogeyman" tagline is what hooked me to read this book and I really liked the double plot line. C.J. was terrorized as a child by "the boogeyman" although noone believes her. Jump ahead 16 years later and C.J. is a divorced, LAPD cop who becomes involved in the "hourglass killer" crimes that have gripped LA.

C.J. faces threats from several fronts while fighting her childhood demons left from her encounter with the boogeyman. This was a wonderful read and I guarantee you will have you looking at every room in your house in a different way!
