Rating: Summary: A Different Type of Frightening and Touching Masterpiece Review: I was at first quite skeptical with "Skeleton Crew". I had just finished reading every novella and story from one of Stephen King's "Night Shift", which impressed me to no compare. I am an avid Stephen King fanatic, but I don't let that come in front of my judgement of his books. I do believe King is a genius and a brilliant mastermind of an author, but he has dissapointed me before. Skeleton Crew seemed a little, well hoky before hand. I read the back, and the comments, and wondered if it could live up to "Night Shift". I opened up the book and picked a story called "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet", because it sounded so intresting. I became hooked. That one story was so intriging, that I put the book down after reading it to interpret it in my head. The next story I chose was "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut", and then I fell in love with the book. "Shortcut" was touching and heartfelt. I won't babble on too much further, but the stories in the terrific masterpiece that stick out are the incredibly captivating and frightening "The Jaunt", the rose morse and sullen "Nona", the bouncy camp schlock-ness of "The Mist" and "The Raft", the alluring and terrfying "Gramma", and pretty much every story in this wonderful book. King lives up to his standard of excellence.
Rating: Summary: For King, short stories are the way to go Review: If you really want to read Steven King, you're definately better off sticking to his short story collections. Though I preferred Night Shift, I got some real scares from Skeleton Crew. I almost couldn't breathe while reading Gramma; Survivor Type and The Jaunt also made a lasting impression. Steven King's novels tend to get a bit out of focus and the end, and I think he fares much better when he is forced to limit himself, as in this short story collection
Rating: Summary: THIS IS GREAT!! Review: this book is sooo amazing.. it keeps you on the edge of you seat all the time.. Cain Rose Up, The Mist, The Raft, The 2 milkman stories, and the poem for Owen.. they are all great.. this is a great novel to read.. i recommend it!
Rating: Summary: A must-read -- keeps you on the edge of your seat... Review: This is absolutely the best collection of short stories I've ever read (maybe on the par with such other brilliant collections Nightshift and Nightmares of Dreamscapes also by Stephen King), and I urge anyone out there to read it and escape reality for a while -- believe me, I know what I'm talking about. My favorites are: The Mist (of course -- the book's price is worth just that one novella), The Monkey, The Raft, Gramma, Beachworld, and Word Processor of the Gods. These tales will keep you hooked, and awake well past midnight, just flipping the pages and lost in a fantastic world that never was and will be. I also liked the fact that these stories were originally published in many various up-scale magazines -- like Redbook, Playboy, and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine -- proving once again the versatility of the master of the macabre S.K.
Rating: Summary: King's best collection of short stories. Review: This is, without a doubt, King's greatest short story collection. Night Shift was great, but it wasn't as well-written as this one. This book is by a more mature writer. Nightmares and Dreamscapes was at best mediocre. This book will blow you away, however. "The Mist" is one of his greatest novellas. "Survivor Type" is his most gruesome, hands down. Other fantastic stories are "The Raft," "Nona," both Milkman stories ("Big Wheels" is utterly surreal), and "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut." "The Reach" is a literary masterpiece and an excellent finale to a fine collection.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest books ever Review: If you like action, and suspense read Stephen King's "Skeleton Crew".My favorite story in this book is "The Mist".I loved that story. You never know what will happen next.If you didn't want to read this book or just didn't then you should have second thoughts about it because it is the best Stephen King book I've read so far!
Rating: Summary: horrible! Review: This book was horrible, the only decent story was the one about the killer toy monkey. And that wasnt even that good!!
Rating: Summary: Only one good story here Review: This collection of King's short stories was okay. Only one story caught my attention and held it. The Mist is a great story and a must read for any King fan. I only wish it was longer
Rating: Summary: Hail to the King Review: In an age where we are subjected to such trite as Wing Commander and The Rage (Carrie 2?! What the hell is King thinking? Does he just let people run off with his ideas?) why this creepy tale hasn't been made into a film is beyond me. It would be scary as all hell. But I suppose Hollywood would screw it up, unless they got maybe Craven to direct. Liam Neeson could pull off a cool David. In all, one of the finest of King's novellas. The other stories are pretty good, examples of King honing his craft if nothing else.
Rating: Summary: good, night shift was better... Review: If your looking for some good short stories, forget this book and check Night Shift. There are some good stories, though, like "the monkey" and "The Mist" , but if you want King's best work go with Night Shift.
