Rating: Summary: An exhilarating collection of pure gems! Review: In this collection of short stories, Stephen King explores many themes. I will only consider some that deal with recurring ideas. « The Mist » deals with illegal, secret and uncontroled experiments by the army. Those produce monsters in a very thick mist. The characters are trapped in a supermarket and try to defeat the monsters and survive waiting for emergency services to rescue them. The tape version is very effective in its sound environment that recreates the tense and psychotic atmosphere. « Here There Be Tygers » deals with a schoolboy who is terrorized by his schoolteacher. He manages to get permission, quite an achievement, to go to the restroom during a class. But he lingers there because he meets a tiger. His lingering brings some messengers and the teacher to check what is happening, and the schoolboy gives the order - or does he really ? - to the tIger to devour the teacher. « The monkey » is by far one of the best. This monkey that comes from Asia, keeps recurring and reemerging from his own destruction, one generation after another. The crimes of this monkey are considered in two generations : that of the father and that of the sons. The parallel reveals that the monkey only comes into the picture to satisfy some destructive, more or less paranoid, more or less justified, desire to kill on the side of one male character. Two couples of brothers in two different generations and the monkey strikes again. Rivalry between two brothers. Death and killing desires in all growing young male teenagers. The attempt to get rid of the monkey will give rise to a catastrophe on the lake. In the background unemployment, poverty, moving on, frustrations of all types. Finally « « Milkman # 1 & 2 » shows that in our consumer's society we must not trust in the least any thing that comes from outside, from the market, because it way well be a trap. This deep dissatisfaction that is always found in Stephen King's fiction about the mercantile and consuming society that is ours. Many more stories, all of them outstanding or very good. Rush to that skeleton and become one of its crew. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
Rating: Summary: An alright book! Review: I thought this was an alright book. The best storie in the book was "The Raft." My second favorite story was "The Mist." I also like "The Monkey," "Nona," and "Survivor Type," was alright. Some other ones were good, but I forget the names. There are a few stupid stories though, like "Gramma," "The Reach," and "The Ballod of ???." An alright book that will pass time.
Rating: Summary: Another Great Masterpiece Review: In my opinion "Skeleton Crew" is even better than "Night Shift" was, and Night Shift has the possibility of giving you awful Kafka-like dreams.Among my favorites are: the Jaunt, Gramma, the Mist, Survivor Type, Vain Rose Up, and many others make up this book. Each story is frightening in its own way. For mist, it's because of that "survivor" stance- people having to survive some cataclysm. King has a way of bringing terror out of you slowly, progressively, and then hitting a climax that knocks your socks off. I enjoyed almost every story, and have read every one except "The Reach" which, I admit, doesn't appeal to me as a 17 year old as much as Survivor Type or Jaunt. For someone debating whether or not to buy the book, buy it. Some have criticized the book's diversity but I applaud it. There is something for every genre of the literary world- science fiction, Jaunt and Beachworld cataclysm survival, Survivor Type and the Mist simple horror, Gramma People going insane, Survivor Type, Cain Rose Up and Ballad of the Flexible Bullet and many more. Readers who aren't strictly horror story lovers will find a great diversity in the book which is also found in "Night Shift." I recommend buying it. King fans and simple horror fans will love it.
Rating: Summary: Not King's Best Review: I picked this novel up and decided to save it, Stephen King I have found is like a candy, something that should be stored and savoured. The first story in this collection "The Mist" is in my opinion the best. It is classic King - slow in its rise before the true nature of a terror is known, terrifying and possibly (though not as plausible as The Stand) real. Other stories are quite good, such as "The Word Processor of the Gods" (immediately comes to mind). Overall however, I must say this is not my favourite piece of his work. Of his other short story/novella collections, I enjoyed Four Seasons, Night Shift and Four Past Midnight more. Many of these stories are either less polished, less frightening or worst of all less interesting than I have come to expect of Stephen King. Nevertheless this is Stephen King. Although this might be my least favourite piece of his, it is his still his, he is a master storyteller. These just happen to be some of his lesser stories.
Rating: Summary: Inspirations Review: It is perhaps impossible to rate a collection of short stories than span 17 years. Some ideas can only be conveyed in short format and, once a reader is prepared, he can enjoy the compact and dense environment of a one-shot game - reading a few pages that force him to to concentrate. Rating: Summary: Uneven-- At Times Formulaic, At Times Brilliant Review: Most of these stories reminded me of stepped-up versions of Alfred Hitchcock collections from the sixties. Most were a lot of verbiage about a loner slowly losing his mind, committing atrocities, ending with a bleak slap in the face. Or cheesy sci-fi. Or everyday monsters. However, one story, "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut," made me feel the kind of overwhelming mix of emotions for which I normally look to literature. I wouldn't recommend this book, but I would certainly recommend two or three of the stories in it. And in all fairness to the author, even the unimpressive stories were well-told.
Rating: Summary: Ambivalence Review: I have read through this book and I really think that it deserves 2 stars. We seem to give too much credit to Stephen King (we have to remember, every book that he has ever written has become a bestseller). This book (like most of this author's) seems to show promise, and then waste it. NUMBER 1- The Mist (Which starts the book) has a good idea behind it. However, Stephen King (as he does in ALL his books) turns simple things into complete perversity. A perverted part would be when the main character was "making love" with a woman in the store, while at the same time, thinking about his son and dead wife. The whole pathetic sexual scenes ruin the plot. The vulgarity of his novels also make you realize that there really isn't much to it. Sure, if he developed it, it MAY become something interesting, but it seems that the only reason that people read Stephen King, is to "get off" on some kind of cheap porn. I have read most of his books, and none of them have been any less perverted. Some of them get going well, but its just those small moments that make you sick. In MISERY he was just thinking and then all of a sudden he 'though' "Jerking off to your own masturbatory thoughts". This came out of nowhere. It really makes you wonder what kind of a pervert Stephen King really is. NUMBER 2- Stephen King is expected to be good. And even if he isn't, there are still those "porn" and pedophiliac fanatics who will defend him. Overall, it was hard to give this book 2 stars. Most of the other stories lacked many things. Stephen King is far from original. His ideas are taken from Edgar Allen Poe and Shirley Jackson. It's amazing that people still want to read his works. Oh well.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK KICKS!! Review: Every story in Skeleton Crew is terrifying in it's own way. Survivor Type is not for the squeamish. The Jaunt is classic sci-fi/ horror. The Raft is horror/suspense. The Mist is one of the most terrifying works that Stephen King has ever written in my opinion. King is a master of character development. There isn't a dull moment in Skeleton Crew.
Rating: Summary: skeleton crew Review: I thought the book was not very good at all. The worst thing was it was boring. It was boring because there was not alot of action. It also was disgusting some what. The part that was disgusting was when the guy was dreaming about his wife and his kid getting cut by the window shattering in the store. The way he described it made it seem disgusting. I did not like the book.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King is a master at writing short horror stories. Review: Once again, he had me spellbound. This book was exciting and every story had some sort of twist. I would love to know where he comes up with his story ideas. He must have quite the imagination. He really is an extraordinary man and his writings in this book prove that once again.
