Rating: Summary: Quick with a Bang Review: I read this book when it came out and love how it started and the entire content was great. I WANT MORE - I will have to read some of the other books out there like DEAD and the dead shall inherit the earth...I have advise my sister, brother in law and even dad to read this book. They all say, MAN what a book, if you love the zombies like they love you, wink, wink,,,bite, dig right in to this buffet of horror, great job on this book let's look for the rest of the story..
Rating: Summary: Not half bad but not great Review: It's worth the paperback price for a quick read. Good premise but also illogical....anyway, the movie "28 days later" is much better - basically the same story but told in a more creative, intriguing way.
Rating: Summary: A Horror Masterpiece Review: This is a book that grabs your by the throat and wont let got to the last page. It brings a new concept to the zombie genre. They are intelligent and very evil. I could go on and on but all I can tell you is buy this book. I can promise you that you wont be dissapointed. I recently found out that he is making a sequel to this book. I cant wait because if it is half as good as this one it is worth its money.
Rating: Summary: Not a horror fan... Review: After reading Brian Keene's novel about the undead, I am hooked. I couldn't put it down and am waiting anxiously for the sequel. A GREAT read! Even if you are not a horror fan, I promise this book is quite an adventure from the first page to the last!
Rating: Summary: Fast-Paced Zombie Action Review: Finally, someone has written a book to make George Romero proud! The Rising is an exhilarating ride from beginning to end. Gory fun, detailed zombies, and danger on almost every page, this was a real treat to read. However, besides a few spelling errors, I did have a few problems. I would have liked a little more character development and a little more atmosphere. A few cliched scenes aside (the gang's dialogue at the zoo and the blanket attitude of all the military), this was a fast read and I was entertained for most of it. The ending was a little bit of a letdown, but hopefully there will be a sequel sometime in the future. If zombies are your thing, this book is jam-packed with the undead. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Maybe this is what "28 Days Later" should have been... Review: **********************SPOLIER ALERT************************ Could Lazarus have been the first zombie? I found Martin a reasonably well-defined character, not just a man of faith, but a man who feels his faith deeply. Jim's character was captivating and motiviation for my continuing to read - would he see Danny again? As the focal character, we feel a kinship to him, yet there are many others to feel that close bond with in this book, like Frankie. Sadly, the end comes and we know in our hearts what happened mirrored the cabin with Delmas and his son, but part of us holds out hope for Jim and Danny, almost wanting a sequel, even though there is nothing more to say or save the human race in this story. ********************END OF SPOILERS*************************** I am interested to read more from Keene and can merely hope that his promise rings true. This was a compelling read. I found it hard to put down. I should say that most of my horror reading has not been focused on zombies, but this has sometruly interesting ideas. There are some references to biblical ideas that might give one pause to consider them. This isn't just us vs. them, zombies vs. humans, it's what if everything around us suddenly changed without warning or following the "rules" we live by. How would we react, go on, live in this new world? Would we survive? Should we survive?
Rating: Summary: half and half Review: How do you like your zombies? The Rising offers quick and intelligent zombies who are almost unstoppable. I didn't much care for that particular concept but it's not what made me dislike this book. The writing reminded me of a college student trying to imitate Hemmingway's style. The grieving hero was pleasant enough but the other characters plus the military secrets angle bored me. This isn't a terrible book but it's not nearly as good as the hype and it's not good enough to make me want to buy anything else by this author again. Oh well.
Rating: Summary: Must-read book for horror fans! Review: Wow, here is an author who's got his finger on the pulse of contemporary pop fiction! Keene has performed the impossible as he breathes new life into the into the rotting zombie-fiction genre. Improves upon some of the concepts you may have seen in the films "Cabin Fever" and "21 Days". Simple yet satisfyingly developed characters, zombified gore, constant tension, and a well conveyed post-apocalyptic mood all contribute to make this one of the most enjoyable horror reads out there. Keene demonstrates a refreshing flexibility uncommon in other horror writers. This is a voice from the future of horror. A great book that captures your attention and throws you a few fun surprises.
Rating: Summary: Eh. Review: I was very excited about this book, there was so much hype about it. I am a bit disappointed, I think so many other things could have been done to make it better. Overall, a nice read, but I kind of wish I'd waited and checked my used bookstore first, before I shelled out 7 bucks for it. Minor spoiler: Too much of an army theme for my liking. That turns me off and makes my mind wander...
Rating: Summary: All you need to know about this book Review: Here's what you need to know about the rising: Brian Keene is an adequate writer. He has the potential to be a great writer. Hey, If a hack like Dean Koontz can make millions, then Keene is the next J.K. Rowling! Just Kidding -- about Keene, not Koontz! Hahaha I like my beer cold and my zombies stupid and slow. I couldn't relate to the 'smart' zombies, the animal zombies, or the demonic possession. Brian Keene actually broke my cheese-o-meter. After two pages you realize that "yes, the main character loves his wife and son". Dude, I don't need 20 more pages to drive this point home. Keene uses unnecessary product placement. He actually manages to reference Cheerios, fruity pebbles and pikachu in one paragraph. He continues to bombard you with product names the entire book. How about "a small imported car" instead of a "honda"? completely unnecessary! I was soooo mad about the ending. If Keene plans a sequel, then he's brilliant. If not, then he's a jerk for ending as he did. In short, if you are a fan of George A. Romero's 'dead' series (are you counting the days to the release of the 'dawn' remake?) or if you're just a fan of good old gore (Keene describes terror and gore ala Clive Barker), then you will probably love this book. My review may not reflect it, but I actually liked it a lot and could not put it down. It is a pretty scary and creepy story. Not as good a 'plot' as Phil Nutmans "Wet Work", but Keene is a MUCH better writer than Nutman (what else has old phil written since wet work? uhh...don't ask me). If Keene wrote 'Wet Work' it would be a masterpiece. If there is a sequel to 'the Rising', I would buy it and read it.
