Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Candy will never seem a sweet name again
Review: This is one of my favourite Koontz books, coming a little below the likes of Hideaway and The Voice Of The Night. It may be a little hard to believe for some but those with open minds will find it a thrilling ride.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A good Read
Review: Good story that always had something happening. Jumping between characters in the beginning was sometimes confusing. And in the end there were still some unresolved issues. I enjoyed reading about the characters. An entertaining book.

Summary: RIPROARING,BREATHSTEALING!!!!!
Review: I was hooked from the first couple of pages, caught up in a suspense that was subtle at first, a gentle but insistent tug on my mind. Then I became captivated by the characters in the book, feeling amusement and a myraid of other emotions as I got caught up in their lives and the inexplicable danger that threatened their existence. Suspense and enthrallment quickly led to an escalating horror that bloomed in my mind like some obscene flower nourished by my fear. I was gripped by quickening curiosity. What would happen next? . . . what would be revealed? I honestly have to tell you that I was panting like a dog by the time all was revealed. I was ecstatic, I was terrified, I had arrived at a climax as satisfying as the one I had envisioned. To say that I enjoyed the book would be a gross understatement, but don't take my word for it read the book!!! Dean Koontz . . . you the man!

Summary: An extremely Imaginative Thriller
Review: I usally read classics, not thrillers, but I have to admit, this guy has as much imagination as any author alive. This was a very weird book. He makes Steven King's movies look simplistic and silly by comparison (Except The Dark Half).

I know his characters are not that deep, and the dialog isn't that rich, but his plot twists and storyline are fascinating. People who put this down probably didn't even read it. They just hate the fact that a best selling author can actually write. This was really a great piece of work. And I've been a fan of his since I saw "Phantoms" in the theatres. This guy is weird. Big time weird. Keep up the good work, and ignore the critics. You da man, Dean. You da man.

Summary: Trite, Boring and Improbable
Review: Combines silly sci-fi with a moronic killer with no personality, and a pair of Mickey Mouse detectives, one female with a 'toughness' complex and what do you get? The Bad Place.

Summary: absolutely one of Dean Koontz' best.
Review: I own all of Dean Koontz' novels except for the latest one & I love them all, but I think this is his best. To write something so well that it actually draws you into the story as a participant takes real talent. I have lost myself in Mr. Koontz' stories on numerous occasions. No offense intended, Mr. Koontz, this is actually a complement, but it takes a mind that is right on the brink of being demented to write such wonderful stories. A reader can participate in your stories & to me, that's the mark of a great novelist. Thank you for so many hours of enjoyment.

Summary: I'm Sorry
Review: The following is a message from Mr. Koontz himself: "Look, guys. I just want to say...I'm really sorry about having written this novel. I don't know what I was thinking. I re-read it today, and I have to admit: it's just plain bad. Inexcusable, really. I don't know how I live with myself sometimes. I mean, here I sit, pumping novel after novel of sub-par, intelligence insulting material into the stores, and you good people (bless your hearts) continue to buy these novels and make me a rich man. After reading through some of my oeuvre a second time (and a few of them for the first time), I realize that you all must buy these things because of my name only and not for the content. Or maybe you just feel sorry for me. Whatever the inscrutable reason, I thank you, but I still must really apologize to any of you who have actually attempted to read one of these things. I'm going to face facts and admit to what all of you already know: I just really can't write. I apologize profusely and I promise to not make any of you suffer any further than you already have. Thank you."

Summary: an okay read
Review: I thought the bad place was okay considering that I don't like Dean Koontz that much. I'd rather pick Stephen King over Dean Koontz any day. In this book he has a good imagination but his usually work is terrible such as Sole Surviver, Dragon Tears, Cold Fire and Intensity. I liked the ending how Candy dies. If you want a great thriller read Stephen King books such as It, Needful Things, The Bachman Books, Misery, Cujo, The Tommyknockers and Firestarter.

Summary: THANK YOU KOONTZ! i LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review: I KNOW I'M ONLY 10 YEARS OLD, BUT I STILL THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS GREAT FOR ANY AGE. I LOVED THE CHARACTERS AND THE PLOT. I LOVED THE STRANGENESS OF THIS BOOK AND I LOVED HOW THE PLOT TOOK DIFFERENT ROOTS AND THEN JOINED TOGETHER AGAIN AT THE END. I RECCOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY THRILLER OR KOONTZ FAN IN THE WORLD. THIS IS THE ONLY KOONTZ BOOK THAT I REALLY EVER LIKED.

READ THIS BOOK!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Chilling!
Review: The Bad Place was one of the best and spookiest efforts by this prolific writer. I give it 4 stars in the context of an overall horror genre, 5 stars in the context of Koontz' own work.

I'd also like to lodge a modest plea for proportionality in reader reviews. I scanned several Koontz titles, and every one of them carried a 4 1/2 star average. How can an unitiated reader decide where to start? They can't all be equally good. I realize this is not a scientific survey, but a self-selected group of respondents who are moved to write usually because they loved the book. Thus the most frequent rating for ANY book is 5 stars, and a few dissenters bring the average down to 4 or 4 1/2. Actually the sample skewing goes even deeper: chances are you didn't pick this book at random, but were somehow predisposed, either because of author or subject, to enjoy it before even starting. Fortunately, the flip side of this effect is that you'll probably read other books by the same author, and hopefully form differential opinions. So some parity is unavoidable, but an opportunity is there for meaningful comparative rating by those who know the author best. Let's just be sure to rate the ones we didn't like so much along with our favorites!

Applying this logic to Koontz, I'd rank them like this:

Excellent: The Bad Place, Hideaway

Good: Strangers, Whispers, Intensity

Sub-par: Cold Fire, Lightning, Watchers
