Rating: Summary: His finest work! Review: If I had to choose the one book by Stephen King to read again and again, this would be it. For one thing you get four stories which are each absolutely brilliant, yet totally different, hence "Different Seasons", both different from each other and from any of his previous work.
Not only this, but two of these stories were made into what are probably the best films I have ever seen, making them two of the few Stephen King books to translate well into film. Another one of these stories is currently being filmed, while I suspect that the last can not be made into a movie, its subject matter is best kept to the imagination.
My thanks to Stephen King for his fantastic imagination.
Rating: Summary: The proof that Stephen King is a great writer... Review: Different Seasons is perhaps the best Stephen King book with which to initiate the neophyte who says, "He can't be a good writer - he writes HORROR." This is King's first, greatest take on the mainstream. Each of the four offerings could be textbook examples of the perfectly written novella. Not coincidentally, this book has inspired three of his best movie-adaptations.Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption: Yes, even if you have seen the movie, you should read this. It tells the story of how an innocent man is able to keep hope alive in prison. Apt Pupil: This, it can be argued, is really a monster story; the monsters however are all too real. A teen-aged boy obsessed with the holocaust discovers his own pet Nazi in the neighborhood. The Body: The inspiration for the wonderful film Stand by Me, it is a heartbreaking coming-of-age tale and the power of friendship. The Breathing Method: The book's one true horror story. I won't try to attempt to explain what it is about. In the Afterward, King commits his worst sin by famously referring to his own work as "the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and a large fries from MacDonald's." Not only does that cut himself short, it is an insult to us, his readers, who think his stuff is pretty darn good. Want proof? Read these stories.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT THRILL RIDE! Review: Some of Stephen King's most insightful work is in here and he writes it in a way that is exciting and so on and so forth...My two favorite stories in this book are APT PUPIL and THE BODY (renamed "Stand By Me" when turned into a motion picture). Apt Pupil reminds me of a suicidal teen's diary and The Body is like a truely beautiful reminiscing of "the good ol' days" in one's life; "Reta Hayworth & The Shawshank Redemption" makes a little more sense than the movie did; Andy (that was his name, right?) and his pal Red were in prison for like 30+ years and the same warden ran the place all that time? Give me a break! However, if in the film, the same warden HADN'T been running the place, the triumphant ending wouldn't have been possible; as far as "The Breathing Method" goes, I'm not sure I like it. It's been a long time since I read it and back then I was always concerned with finishing a book ASAP. So I'm not sure I judged that story very well then.
I would have to say that by far, this is Stephen King's best work(s). However, if being scared or being grossed out suits you better, it would make sense for you to disagree. I, on the other hand, don't get scared that easily.
