Summary: A great look at what Stephen King can really do
Review: I love reading Stephen King books, I've read many of his books, I'm only twelve so many kids think that I'm a freak for reading these horror books. But now I could tell them that this is NOT a horror book. "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemtion" was a compelling and uplifting story, but I still believe the movie, "The Shawshank Redemtion" starring Tim Robbins (Andy) and Morgan Freeman (Red), was better, because it explained more about the escape. "Apt Pupil" was a great look at the disturbing dark side of human nature. Including Dussander's role in the imprisonment of the Jewish in the Holucaust. "The Body" was a sad story, I really don't know why, but just as I read it I really began to realize that these things that he is talking about are real life problems. The movie based on "The Body", intitled "Stand By Me" was good, but not quite as good as the book, because I believe the movie didn't have as much heart as the book did. I didn't like "The Breathing Method" as much as the other three stories, but it was quite interesting never the less. This book is about the tenth Stephen King book I've read, and I think anyone that is interested in reading Stephen King, but doesn't like horror that much, should read this book.

Summary: Great Stories
Review: First of all, I read this book because of all the other reviews at this site that said how good it was. So I guess I can thank you for inspiring me to read "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" probably one of the best things I've read. A very gentle and uplifting story that is exciting and not too long (only about 100 pages), that breaks the image of Stephan King being a stereotypical horror writer. The final pages of the story sum up all of its feeling. I also read "Apt Pupil," an incredibly different story that I also liked though not as much as RH&SR. I didn't read the other stories. But I did read the opening paragraphs of "The Body" and immediately burst into tears! Wow! His words rang clear and true. A good book; read it.

Summary: Without a doubt, Stephen King's best
Review: I am not a fan of King's and find many of his books bloated, ill-conceived, and lacking focus. He is at his best when he writes "short novels" and the stories in this book are without a doubt his finest (but "Four Past Midnight" is also quite good). With the possible exception of the last story here, each of them is a real treat.

What makes these novellas so good is that each presents a profile of a character at a defining moment in his life. These characters are well developed and believable so you care about the outcome and get involved in the story. He then takes you through a series of events that is fascinating, and in the case of "Apt Pupil", disturbing and shocking.

"Apt Pupil" is the best thing King has written and actually deserves something closer to a 9. Whether you're a fan or not, check this out.

Summary: Loved it
Review: I read this book ten years ago, at the age of 15, in english (my mother tongue is greek) and I loved it. Though all stories were great I especially liked "Apt pupil" (or "summer of corruption"-most appropriate subtitle). It really shocks by showing how easily one can mess with someone else's mind. READ IT!

Summary: You must read this book.
Review: I always recommend this book to anyone who has resisted the idea of reading anything written by Stephen King because they don't like "horror." They are missing out on one the best living American authors, and this collection demonstrates it. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is one of the best short stories I have EVER read -- and I was an English major. I was forced to slog through a lot of them. Of all the stories, The Breathing Method was probably the weakest. But even that one will hold your attention to the very end. Read this book, you'll then read everything else Mr. King has written.

Summary: The very best of Stephen King
Review: This is King before he started peddling his stuff by the pound, and it is quality writing. Certainly Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body are among the two best novellas in our language, almost approaching the short novels of John Steinbeck. The Body is remarkable in that it could be the biography of every pre-teen boy in the same or similar circumstances. This is exactly what I would have done given the opportunity, and this is exactly how we spoke to each other. We used language that would make a sailor blush, but only in the company of each other. Our folks would have killed us had they heard it, even though they are the ones from whom we learned it. Shawshank and The Body made two terrific movies, mainly because they were utterly faithful to the books upon which they were based, even down to specific dialogue. This is one of those rare cases in which you can see the movie and read the book with equal delight, and it doesn't make any difference which you do first.

Summary: Read it, again and again!
Review: I read this book many years ago in the hardbound edition. I was most impressed with "The Breathing Method". Perhaps it is because I was pregnant at the time and it touched a cord. Wow! To what lengths we mothers will go to protect our children? This was not simply a horror story. I say, read it if you haven't already, and if you have, read it again!!!
